    Synthesis and characterization of polymeric linseed oil grafted methyl methacrylate or styrene

    Syntheses of wholly natural polymeric linseed oil (PLO) containing peroxide groups have been reported. Peroxidation, epoxidation and/or perepoxidation reactions of linseed oil, either under air or under oxygen flow at room temperature, resulted in polymeric peroxides, PLO-air and PLO-ofl, containing 1.3 and 3.5 wt.% of peroxide, with molecular weights of 2100 and 3780 Da, respectively. PLO-air contained cross-linked film up to 46.1 wt.% after a reaction time of 60 d, associated with a waxy, soluble part (PLO-air-s) that was isolated with chloroform extraction. PLO-ofl was obtained as a waxy, viscous liquid without any cross-linked part at the end of 24 d under visible irradation and oxygen flow. Polymeric peroxides, PLO-air-s and PLO-ofl initiated the free radical polymerization of both methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styreine (S) to give PMMA-graft-PLO and PS-graft-PLO graft copolymers in high yields with M-w varying from 37 to 470 kDa. The polymers obtained were characterized by FT-IR. H-1 NMR, TGA, DSC and GPC techniques. Cross-linked polymers were also studied by means of swelling measurements. PMNA-graft-PLO graft copolymer film samples were also used in cell-culture studies. Fibroblast cells were well adhered and proliferated on the copolymer film surfaces, which is important in tissue engineering

    Local Optimal Sets and Bounded Archiving on Multi-objective NK-Landscapes with Correlated Objectives

    The properties of local optimal solutions in multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems are crucial for the effectiveness of local search algorithms, particularly when these algorithms are based on Pareto dominance. Such local search algorithms typically return a set of mutually nondominated Pareto local optimal (PLO) solutions, that is, a PLO-set. This paper investigates two aspects of PLO-sets by means of experiments with Pareto local search (PLS). First, we examine the impact of several problem characteristics on the properties of PLO-sets for multi-objective NK-landscapes with correlated objectives. In particular, we report that either increasing the number of objectives or decreasing the correlation between objectives leads to an exponential increment on the size of PLO-sets, whereas the variable correlation has only a minor effect. Second, we study the running time and the quality reached when using bounding archiving methods to limit the size of the archive handled by PLS, and thus, the maximum size of the PLO-set found.     Purulent disease of the uterus develops in 40% of dairy cows after parturition, when the epithelium of the endometrium is disrupted to expose the underlying stroma to bacteria. The severity of endometrial pathology is associated with isolation of Trueperella pyogenes. In the present study, T. pyogenes alone caused uterine disease when infused into the uterus of cattle where the endometrial epithelium was disrupted. The bacterium secretes a cholesterol-dependent cytolysin, pyolysin (PLO), and the plo gene was identical and the plo gene promoter was highly similar amongst 12 clinical isolates of T. pyogenes. Bacteria-free filtrates of the T. pyogenes cultures caused hemolysis and endometrial cytolysis, and PLO was the main cytolytic agent, because addition of anti-PLO antibody prevented cytolysis. Similarly, a plo-deletion T. pyogenes mutant did not cause hemolysis or endometrial cytolysis. Endometrial stromal cells were notably more sensitive to PLO-mediated cytolysis than epithelial or immune cells. Stromal cells also contained more cholesterol than epithelial cells, and reducing stromal cell cholesterol content using cyclodextrins protected against PLO. Although T. pyogenes or plo-deletion T. pyogenes stimulated accumulation of inflammatory mediators, such as IL-1beta, IL-6, and IL-8, from endometrium, PLO did not stimulate inflammatory responses by endometrial or hematopoietic cells, or in vitro organ cultures of endometrium. The marked sensitivity of stromal cells to PLO-mediated cytolysis provides an explanation for how T. pyogenes acts as an opportunistic pathogen to cause pathology of the endometrium once the protective epithelium is lost after parturition

    Monitoring Results for Pfiesteria piscidida and Pfiesteria-like Organisms from Virginia Waters in 1998

    Results of an extensive 1998 monitoring program for the presence of Pfiesteria-like organisms (PLO) in Virginia estuaries indicate these dinoflagellates are widely distributed in both the water column, and as cysts in the sediment, however Pfiesteria piscicida was not detected at this time. The highest concentrations of PLO were in estuaries along the Virginia shore line of the Potomac River, and in western Chesapeake Bay estuaries from the Little Wicomico River to the Rappahannock River. The most common PLO included Cryptoperidiniopsis sp. and Gymnodinium galatheanum. The lowest PLO concentrations were at ocean side locations. PLO were also present throughout the water column at stations in the lower Chesapeake Bay, being most abundant in waters above the pycnocline

    Program Learning Outcomes (PLO) disusun setiap program studi Pendidikan Jasmani sebagai indikator profil lulusan. Evaluasi pencapaian PLO secara internal dilakukan setiap semester untuk memeriksa penguasaan mahasiswa terhadap profil lulusan. Meskipun begitu, PLO mestinya dievaluasi secara eksternal untuk mengetahui relevansinya terhadap kompetensi yang dibutuhkan saat ini. Sehingga terjadi link and match antara proses pendidikan dengan kebutuhan lapangan kerja. Penelitian deskriptif ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi relevansi PLO kurikulum program studi Pendidikan Jasmani dengan kompetensi guru PJOK saat ini. Sebanyak 112 guru PJOK mengisi angket dalam bentuk google form sebanyak satu kali. Google form dibuka untuk menerima respons dari para guru selama 30 hari. Analisis data menggunakan deskriptif statistik dan persentase. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata PLO masuk kategori sangat relevan. Akan tetapi terdapat responden yang memberikan nilai di bawah relevan. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa monitoring relevansi PLO perlu dilakukan sehingga didapatkan masukan yang riil dari lapangan untuk perbaikan secara berkelanjutan. Kompetensi pedagogi dan profesional yang berhubungan dengan integrasi ICT dengan pembelajaran perlu diperdalam oleh para calon guru PJOK

    Direct Comparison Between Phase Locked Oscillator and Direct Resonance Oscillator in the Noncontact Atomic Force Microscopy Under Ultrahigh Vacuum

    I have demonstrated the advantage of the phase locked oscillator (PLO) over the conventional direct resonance oscillator (DRO) in noncontact mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) under ultrahigh vacuum. Direct comparison between PLO and DRO has been made in terms of background noise level, temporal response, and stability. Compared to the DRO method without phase coherence, the experimental results show that the PLO method is more effective in reducing the noise level and enhancing the stability over all force regimes in UHV noncontact AFM. The noise reduction and stability enhancement in PLO indicate the important role of the phase coherent effect in improving the capability of noncontact imaging in UHV
