    Effect of C-face 4H-SiC(0001) deposition on thermopower of single and multilayer graphene in AA, AB and ABC stacking

    The Seebeck coefficient in multilayer graphene is investigated within the density-functional theory, using the semiclassical Boltzmann equations and interpolating the bands in a maximally-localized Wannier functions basis set. We compare various graphene stackings (AA, AB and ABC) both free-standing and deposited on a 4H4H-SiC(0001) C-terminated substrate. We find that the presence of the SiC substrate can significantly affect the thermopower properties of graphene layers, depending on the stacking, providing a promising way to tailor efficient graphene-based devices.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    On Tunnelling Through the Black Hole Horizon

    It is shown here that there is no way for particle creation to occur by quantum tunneling through an infinitesimal neighborhood of the black hole horizon. This result is a trivial consequence of the regularity of the horizon, the equivalence principle and the general covariance of the relativistic theory of gravity. Moreover, we also confirm the less trivial statement that no particle creation by quantum tunneling through the black hole horizon is possible independent of the size of the presupposed tunneling domain.Comment: 21 pages, new section is adde

    Monte Carlo Pricing of American Options Using Nonparametric Regression

    This paper provides an introduction to Monte Carlo algorithms for pricing American options written on multiple assets, with special emphasis on methods that can be applied in a multi-dimensional setting. Simulated paths can be used to estimate by nonparametric regression the continuation value of the option or the optimal exercise policy and the value functions can then be computed by backward induction. The flexibility of nonparametric regression allows to obtain accurate price estimates with remarkable speed.     PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: More than 50% of all gynaecological cancers can be classified as rare tumours (defined as an annual incidence of <6 per 100,000) and such tumours represent an important challenge for clinicians. RECENT FINDINGS: Rare cancers account for more than one fifth of all new cancer diagnoses, more than any of the single common cancers alone. Reviewing the RARECAREnet database, some of the tumours occur infrequently, whilst others because of their natural history have a high prevalence, and therefore appear to be more common, although their incidence is also rare. Harmonization of medical practice, guidelines and novel trials are needed to identify rare tumours and facilitate the development of new treatments. Ovarian tumours are the focus of this review, but we comment on other rare gynaecological tumours, as the diagnosis and treatment challenges faced are similar. FUTURE: This requires European collaboration, international partnerships, harmonization of treatment and collaboration to overcome the regulatory barriers to conduct international trials. Whilst randomized trials can be done in many tumour types, there are some for which conducting even single arm studies may be challenging. For these tumours alternative study designs, robust collection of data through national registries and audits could lead to improvements in the treatment of rare tumours. In addition, concentring the care of patients with rare tumours into a limited number of centres will help to build expertise, facilitate trials and improve outcomes
