    Delete or merge regressors for linear model selection

    We consider a problem of linear model selection in the presence of both continuous and categorical predictors. Feasible models consist of subsets of numerical variables and partitions of levels of factors. A new algorithm called delete or merge regressors (DMR) is presented which is a stepwise backward procedure involving ranking the predictors according to squared t-statistics and choosing the final model minimizing BIC. In the article we prove consistency of DMR when the number of predictors tends to infinity with the sample size and describe a simulation study using a pertaining R package. The results indicate significant advantage in time complexity and selection accuracy of our algorithm over Lasso-based methods described in the literature. Moreover, a version of DMR for generalized linear models is proposed

    Analýza procesu zplyňování alternativního paliva (50% odpad, 50% plasty)

    The paper presents analysis of alternative fuel gasification with use of flue gas as a gasifying agent. As a result of a process syngas with combustible components (CO, H2, CH4, CnHm) was obtained. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine usability of selected alternative fuel to low-temperature gasification process. Tests were conducted in a laboratory reactor allowing to gasify a fuel sample of appx. 1 g. The experimental stand enables recording of a sample weight loss and syngas composition. The process takes place for fuel samples of a constant weight and different granulation and with a set composition of flue gas used as a gasifying agent. The aim of the laboratory research was to determine the usability of RDF fuel for indirect co-firing in power boilers and to build a knowledge base for industrial-size process by defining the process parameters: kinetics (time for fuel to remain in the reactor), recommended fuel granulation and process temperature.Článek prezentuje analýzu zplyňování alternativního paliva s využitím spalin jako zplyňovacího prostředku. Jako výsledek zplyńovacího procesu “syngas” byly definovány hořlavé složky (CO, H2, CH4, CnHm). Byly provedeny laboratorní testy pro určení použitelnosti vybraného alternativního paliva pro proces zplyňování při nízkých teplotách. Testy byly prováděny v laboratorním reaktoru, který umožnil zplyňovat vzorek paliva o hmotnosti cca. 1 g. Experimentální zařízení umožňuje zaznamenat úbytek hmotnosti vzorku a jeho složení. Proces probíhá u vzorků paliva s konstantní hmotností a s různou granulometrii a se stanoveným složením spalin použitým jako zplyňovací medium. Cílem laboratorního výzkumu bylo zjistit použitelnost paliva RDF pro nepřímé spolu-spalování v energetických kotlích a vytvořit znalostní základnu pro reálný průmyslový proces definováním parametrů procesu: kinetiky (doby setrvání paliva v reaktoru), doporučená granulometrie paliva a teploty procesu

    RAB family gene expression in breast cancer cells under influence of paclitaxel

    The aim of this study was to investigate the role of paclitaxel on RAB family of genes in primary breast cancer cell lines. The cancer breast cells obtained from 40 women during mastectomy were used to address this issue. The group included patients with intraductal breast cancer - lesions in I or II advancement level by TNM classification and G1-G2 by Bloom classification. (tumor dimensions up to 2.0 cm without metastases to lymph nodes). Cytostatic drugs before surgery were not administered to these patients. The cultures were conducted in 25 cm^2^ plastic containers at RPMI medium with addiction of 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) at the standard conditions. After reaching concentration levels of 10 000/ml of the cells, the cultures were treated with 60 ng/ml and 300 ng/ml doses of paclitaxel. The concentrations were calculated in relation to therapeutic doses of paclitaxel, applied in polytherapy in patients with breast cancer. The cell cultures untreated for cytostatic were used as a control group. Analysis was conducted for RAB family of genes: RAB3D, RAB5B, RAB5C, RAB7, RAB7L1, RAB9P1, RAB10. RAB11A, RAB311B, RAB13, RAB18, RAB22A, RAB23, RAB26, RAB27A, RAB27B, RAB28, RAB30, RAB31, RAB33A, RAB3D6, RAB 38, RABL2B Total RNA was extracted from the harvest control group and the treated cells, and this was followed by cDNA synthesis, which was used for hybridization assays using arrays. A lower dose of paclitaxel (60 ng/ml) treatment resulted in an increase (2-4 fold- statistically significant), whereas a higher dose (300 ng/ml) caused a decrease (2-fold - statistically insignificant) in expression of examined oncogenes, compared to that of the control group.In summary, this data indicates that 60 ng/ml paclitaxel dose induced the RAB gene expression in an up-regulated pathway. A higher concentration of cytostatic (300 ng/ml) is a toxic dose for primary breast cells in vitro

The brachial epithelial fractures of the humerus are typical childhood traumas. Complex anatomy and biomechanics of the elbow cause that the treatment and evaluation of the results of the epidural fractures is still being investigated. In the literature many works have been devoted to pathomechanism, types of treatment, prevention of complications.Objective. The aim was to determine the most frequently occurring deviations from the normal state after a fracture and factors affecting the distal consequences of fracture of the superficial humeral humerus.Material and methods. 282 patients with transverse epicardial displacement of the humerus were included. During the study the total number of children hospitalized due to the injury of the elbow was 488.Results. 73.3% of patients had a deviation of the shoulder and forearm angle after fracture. Valvular deformity was reported in 13.9%. 180º (cubitus rectus) arm-and-mouth angle occurred in 17.8%. The reduction of angina in the range of valvular heart disease occurred in 17.8%. Increased elbow flexion occurred in 22.8% of cases.Conclusions. The brachial epithelial fractures of the humerus account for 57.9% of all injuries to the elbow joint in children. The deviation of the brachial-forearm angle occurred in 72.3% of cases. Most of them, because 22.3% of the lumbar deformities were observed. The elbow varus occurred in 13.9% of children. The low rate of observed deformation was the result of the accepted measurement method. At the recording of each deviation, the percentage of observed cases of elbow joint increased to 49.5%

    Recommendations for the process of biomass and waste gasification in a rotary reactor

    The paper presents a technology for biomass and waste gasification/pyrolysis with use of flue gas as a converting agent. This technology includes a rotary reactor that operates continuously and is integrated with a power boiler, for example WR-25 type grate boiler. Process gas (syngas) as well as possible char being a result of the process are combustible and can be recirculated to the boiler’s combustion chamber. The paper presents laboratory research of selected biomass and waste: Refuse derived fuel (RDF), wood chips, nut shells, sewage sludge, coal sludge, mixture of 50% coal sludge with 50% RDF. Basing on the laboratory research a calculation procedure was developed to determine an industrial-size process parameters. The procedure allows to calculate how much fuel can be gasified/converted in a rotary reactor and the reactor’s dimension: inner diameter Dwr and length Lr

    U ovom članku promatra se filozofski pojam Karola Wojtyłe »personalistička vrijednost ljudskog čina« kao legitimni ključni pojam – zasigurno ne jedini koji bi bio apsolutno središnji u njegovoj filozofskoj misli – za sustavno i potpunije shvaćanje njegove pretpontifikalne filozofije. Tijekom čitavog članka autori nastoje tekstualno i pojmovno potkrijepiti tu argumentaciju iz izvornih tekstova Karola Wojtyłe. Potom pristupaju pokazivanju originalnosti Wojtyłinih uvida u pogledu otkrića distinktne personalističke razine kao odnosnog kriterija vrijednosti čina ljudske osobe. Članak pokazuje kako Wojtyłini tekstovi predstavljaju plodonosnu konceptualnu razmjenu i sučeljavanje s tradicionalnim argumentima tomističke metafizike, posebice s pripadajućom teorijom naravnog zakona. Budući da Wojtyła identificira određene vlastite pojmove iz svojega kapitalnog djela Osoba i čin iz 1969. godine – samoodređenje, transcendenciju i integraciju – kao ključne pojedinačne vidike ispravnog razumijevanja personalističke vrijednosti čina, autori prikupljaju iz cjeline njegova opusa one sastavnice tih pojmova koje najbolje pokazuju specifični sadržaj personalističke vrijednosti. Na različitim mjestima u članku autori ukazuju na mogućnosti daljnjeg razvijanja određenih perspektiva Wojtyłina filozofskog projekta, koje su samo okvirno ocrtane u njegovim tekstovima, a tiču se ponajviše sjecišta personalističke vrijednosti, s jedne, i različitih sastavnica teorije naravnog zakona, s druge strane.This article attempts to postulate »the personalistic value of the human act« as a key-concept for a more adequate understanding of the whole of Karol Wojtyła’s pre-pontifical philosophical project. Throughout the article the authors provide a textual, as well as conceptual analysis to this claim, mainly by permitting Wojtyła’s own writings to speak on their own. Having postulated the personalistic value of the human act as a legitimate key-concept –certainly not the only one central to his philosophical project – the authors demonstrate the originality of Wojtyła’s insights as regards the discovery of a distinct personalistic level pertaining to the reality of the human person and its acts. The article shows how Wojtyła’s writings fruitfully interrelate with the traditional methaphysical concepts of St. Thomas Aquinas, especially with the elements of his natural law theory. Using a methodology today known as »thomistic personalism«, Wojtyła discovers the personalistic domain of values as distinct from – though not in any way opposed to – the domain of moral values. He establishes that the personalistic value represents a sort of a structural preamble for the domain of moral values. Given that Wojtyła identifies certain concepts – previously elaborated in his central, 1969 work »The Person and the Act« – namely, self-determination, transcendence and integration – as crucial particular aspects of the correct understanding of the personalistic value of the act, the authors proceed to extrapolate the elements of these concepts that best illuminate the specific content of the personalistic value. On numerous occasions in the article footnoted references are made to possible further developments of the perspectives only roughly outlined in Wojtyła’s own writings, as regards the intersections of his concept of the personalistic value and various traits of the thomistic natural law theory

    Idiopathic trigeminal sensory neuropathy is a rare clinical condition characterized by sensory disturbances on the face. Its symptoms may be permanent or temporary and a wide variety of diagnostic procedures is usually required to establish the diagnosis. Frequently, it is the first manifestation of a systemic disorder. In the majority of cases causal treatment is not possible, even though patients with trigeminal sensory neuropathy should be carefully monitored by physicians.Idiopatyczna czuciowa neuropatia trójdzielna to rzadka choroba dotycząca zaburzeń czucia w obrębie twarzy. Zjawisko to może mieć charakter przejściowy lub stały, diagnostyka zaś wymaga zazwyczaj wykonania wielu różnych badań. Często neuropatia trójdzielna jest pierwszym objawem choroby układowej. Najczęściej leczenie przyczynowe nie jest możliwe, jednak pacjenci z idiopatyczną neuropatią trójdzielną powinni być pod stałą opieką medyczną

    The suitability of using broiler rabbit leathers in gloves and footwear manufacturing

    [EN] The aim of the study was to learn about the structure of broiler rabbit skins, with the possibility of using them as dressing for gloves and shoe uppers. The histological structure, organoleptic and rheological properties of leathers such as tensile and puncture strength, energy state based on dynamic tests and topography map of their thickness were assessed. The study material included the skins of two groups of hybrid rabbits (F1), 24 pieces each, from breeds crossing: ♂ Belgian Giant Grey × ♀ Burgundy (BOS×BU), or ♂ Belgian Giant Grey × ♀ New Zealand White (BOS×BNZ). Histological, rheological, organoleptic and topography thickness studies of broiler rabbit leathers have proven that they can be intended for the production of not only gloves, but also shoe uppers.     Phosphorylation of thymidylate synthase affects slow-binding inhibition by 5-fluoro-dUMP and N4-hydroxy-dCMP

    Endogenous thymidylate synthases, isolated from tissues or cultured cells of the same specific origin, have been reported to show differing slow-binding inhibition patterns. These were reflected by biphasic or linear dependence of the inactivation rate on time and accompanied by differing inhibition parameters. Considering its importance for chemotherapeutic drug resistance, the possible effect of thymidylate synthase inhibition by post-translational modification was tested, e.g. phosphorylation, by comparing sensitivities to inhibition by two slow-binding inhibitors, 5-fluoro-dUMP and N4-hydroxy-dCMP, of two fractions of purified recombinant mouse enzyme preparations, phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated, separated by metal oxide/hydroxide affinity chromatography on Al(OH)3 beads. The modification, found to concern histidine residues and influence kinetic properties by lowering Vmax, altered both the pattern of dependence of the inactivation rate on time from linear to biphasic, as well as slow-binding inhibition parameters, with each inhibitor studied. Being present on only one subunit of at least a great majority of phosphorylated enzyme molecules, it probably introduced dimer asymmetry, causing the altered time dependence of the inactivation rate pattern (biphasic with the phosphorylated enzyme) and resulting in asymmetric binding of each inhibitor studied. The latter is reflected by the ternary complexes, stable under denaturing conditions, formed by only the non-phosphorylated subunit of the phosphorylated enzyme with each of the two inhibitors and N5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate. Inhibition of the phosphorylated enzyme by N4-hydroxy-dCMP was found to be strongly dependent on [Mg2+], cations demonstrated previously to also influence the activity of endogenous mouse TS isolated from tumour cells
