On the basis of lake sediments studies (palynological, subfossil Ostracoda and geochemical analyses) the main stages of the palaeoenvironmental changes were obtained. Lake Syczyńskie is situated in the Pagóry Chełmskie region. Defined changes of plants, Ostracoda and variability of the main characteristics sediments (content of organic matter and calcium carbonate) showed high compatibility with widely recognised stages of climate change during the Late Glacial and the holocene. The detailed analysis allowed indicating the main phases of biological development of the lake based on the processes of eutrophication, hydrological changes in the lake catchment and temperature conditions. Determined Ostracoda species in the sediments of Lake Syczyńskie, among other Cytherissa lacustris, Metacypris cordata and Fabaeformiscandona protzi is the basis of concluding about significant changes in the functioning of the lake occurring under the influence of climate changes.W oparciu o wyniki badań osadów jeziornych (analiz palinologicznych, składu gatunkowego subfosylnych zespołów Ostracoda i podstawowych analiz geochemicznych) określono główne etapy zmian paleośrodowiskowych w rejonie Jeziora Syczyńskiego, położonego w obszarze Pagórów Chełmskich. Określone w badaniach etapy zmian szaty roślinnej w otoczeniu jeziora, zmiany składu gatunkowego subfosylnych zespołów małżoraczków (Ostracoda) w ujęciu jakościowym oraz zmienność podstawowych cech akumulowanych osadów (zawartość materii organicznej i węglanu wapnia) wykazały dużą zgodność z powszechnie wyróżnianymi etapami zmian klimatycznych późnego glacjału i holocenu. Wykonane analizy pozwoliły na wskazanie najważniejszych etapów biologicznego rozwoju jezior z uwzględnieniem procesów eutrofizacji, hydrologicznych zmian w zlewni jeziornej i warunków termicznych.

Cryptographic techniques used to provide integrity of digital content in long-term storage

The main objective of the project was to obtain advanced mathematical methods to guarantee the verification that a required level of data integrity is maintained in long-term storage. The secondary objective was to provide methods for the evaluation of data loss and recovery. Additionally, we have provided the following initial constraints for the problem: a limitation of additional storage space, a minimal threshold for desired level of data integrity and a defined probability of a single-bit corruption. With regard to the main objective, the study group focused on the exploration methods based on hash values. It has been indicated that in the case of tight constraints, suggested by PWPW, it is not possible to provide any method based only on the hash values. This observation stems from the fact that the high probability of bit corruption leads to unacceptably large number of broken hashes, which in turn stands in contradiction with the limitation for additional storage space. However, having loosened the initial constraints to some extent, the study group has proposed two methods that use only the hash values. The first method, based on a simple scheme of data subdivision in disjoint subsets, has been provided as a benchmark for other methods discussed in this report. The second method ("hypercube" method), introduced as a type of the wider class of clever-subdivision methods, is built on the concept of rewriting data-stream into a n-dimensional hypercube and calculating hash values for some particular (overlapping) sections of the cube. We have obtained interesting results by combining hash value methods with error-correction techniques. The proposed framework, based on the BCH codes, appears to have promising properties, hence further research in this field is strongly recommended. As a part of the report we have also presented features of secret sharing methods for the benefit of novel distributed data-storage scenarios. We have provided an overview of some interesting aspects of secret sharing techniques and several examples of possible applications

Elucidation of role of graphene in catalytic designs for electroreduction of oxygen

Graphene is, in principle, a promising material for consideration as component (support, active site) of electrocatalytic materials, particularly with respect to reduction of oxygen, an electrode reaction of importance to low-temperature fuel cell technology. Different concepts of utilization, including nanostructuring, doping, admixing, preconditioning, modification or functionalization of various graphene-based systems for catalytic electroreduction of oxygen are elucidated, as well as important strategies to enhance the systems' overall activity and stability are discussed

Evaluation of Reduced-Graphene-Oxide Aligned with WO3-Nanorods as Support for Pt Nanoparticles during Oxygen Electroreduction in Acid Medium

Hybrid supports composed of chemically-reduced graphene-oxide-aligned with tungsten oxide nanowires are considered here as active carriers for dispersed platinum with an ultimate goal of producing improved catalysts for electroreduction of oxygen in acid medium. Here WO3 nanostructures are expected to be attached mainly to the edges of graphene thus making the hybrid structure not only highly porous but also capable of preventing graphene stacking and creating numerous sites for the deposition of Pt nanoparticles. Comparison has been made to the analogous systems utilizing neither reduced graphene oxide nor tungsten oxide component. By over-coating the reduced-graphene-oxide support with WO3 nanorods, the electrocatalytic activity of the system toward the reduction of oxygen in acid medium has been enhanced even at the low Pt loading of 30 microg cm-2. The RRDE data are consistent with decreased formation of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of WO3. Among important issues are such features of the oxide as porosity, large population of hydroxyl groups, high Broensted acidity, as well as fast electron transfers coupled to unimpeded proton displacements. The conclusions are supported with mechanistic and kinetic studies involving double-potential-step chronocoulometry as an alternative diagnostic tool to rotating ring-disk voltammetry.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1805.0315

AbstractPatient-derived xenograft (PDX) tumor models have emerged as a new approach to evaluate the effects of cancer drugs on patients’ personalized tumor grafts enabling to select the best treatment for the cancer patient and providing a new tool for oncology drug developers. Here, we report that human tumors engrafted in immunodeficient mice are susceptible to formation of B-and T-cell PDX tumors. We xenografted human primary and metastatic tumor samples into immunodeficient mice and found that a fraction of PDX tumors generated from patients’ samples of breast, colon, pancreatic, bladder and renal cancer were histologically similar to lymphocytic neoplasms. Moreover, we found that the first passage of breast and pancreatic cancer PDX tumors after initial transplantation of the tumor pieces from the same human tumor graft could grow as a lymphocytic tumor in one mouse and as an adenocarcinoma in another mouse. Whereas subcutaneous PDX tumors resembling human adenocarcinoma histology were slow growing and non-metastatic, we found that subcutaneous PDX lymphocytic tumors were fast growing and formed large metastatic lesions in mouse lymph nodes, liver, lungs, and spleen. PDX lymphocytic tumors were comprised of B-cells which were Epstein-Barr virus positive and expressed CD45 and CD20. Because B-cells are typically present in malignant solid tumors, formation of B-cell tumor may evolve in a wide range of PDX tumor models. Although PDX tumor models show great promise in the development of personalized therapy for cancer patients, our results suggest that confidence in any given PDX tumor model requires careful screening of lymphocytic markers

The usefulness of His bundle pacing in a heterogeneous population of patients with impaired left ventricular systolic function

Background: His bundle pacing (HBP) maintains a physiological activation pattern of ventricular activation, and in patients with intraventricular conduction delay (IVCD) it can normalize wide QRS duration. Methods: A total of 181 patients from the HBP registry were enrolled into a the study, which was conducted at the Department of Electrocardiology in Katowice, Poland. The patients had left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 50% and were implanted between November 2015 and April 2019. The HBP indications were as follows: 1) bradycardia and atrioventricular conduction disturbances with expected high pacing burden, 2) IVCD, LVEF ≤ 35%, with an indication for resynchronization therapy, 3) the need to upgrade to resynchronization therapy due to pacing-induced cardiomyopathy. Pacing parameters and echocardiographic and clinical data were assessed for up to 2 years of follow-up (FU). Results: His bundle pacing was successful in 154 (85.1%) patients. Eighty-two patients completed a 6-month FU. The mean age was 70.6 ± 9.23 years, and 79% were males. At 6 months FU LVEF improved from 35.3 ± 8.22% to 43.1 ± 10.14% (p < 0.0001), and indexed left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESVi) decreased from 63.1 ± 25.21 mL/m2 to 51.9 ± 22.79 mL/m2 (p < 0.0001). In 53.1%, the LVESVi reduction was greater than 15%. The improvement in LVEF and LVESVi was also observed after 24 months of FU. Conclusions: His bundle pacing in permanently paced patients when LVEF is reduced below 50% is associated with improvement in LVEF and reverse left ventricle remodeling

Re-hybrid thoracic stent graft implantation with total aortic arch debranching in urgent procedure: case report

INTRODUCTION: Implementation of emergency endovascular aortic repair provides an opportunity to treat complicated acute aortic syndromes involving descending aorta. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old man with a history of aortic coarctation surgical repair as a child and an anastomosis aneurysm repair with a double endovascular stent graft implantation with hemi-arch transposition was urgently admitted with intensifying shortness of breath and hoarseness. A computed tomography study confirmed a blood leak into an aneurysm sac in proximal landing zones of implanted stent grafts (Type I endoleak). Therefore, he qualified for hybrid surgery. First, the ascending aorta brachiocephalic trunk was anastomosed with a 12 mm vascular prosthesis from an upper mini-sternotomy. In the next step, normothermic extracorporeal circulation was necessary to prevent cerebral circulation. Finally, a GORE stent graft (Gore Medical, Flagstaff, AZ, USA) was implanted with a proximal landing zone directly behind the anastomosis site of the vascular prosthesis and ascending aorta. The hospital course was uncomplicated, and the patient was discharged home 5 days after the procedure. CONCLUSIONS: Complicated aortic pathologies requiring emergent interventions can be treated by a hybrid approach utilizing multistep surgical and endovascular techniques achieving optimal results
