Objective To study the incidence, clinical presentation, risk factors, imaging diagnosis, and clinical outcome of perinatal stroke. Methods Data was retrospectively collected from full-term newborns admitted to the neonatal unit of a level III maternity in Lisbon with cerebral stroke, from January 2007 to December 2011. Results There were 11 cases of stroke: nine were arterial ischemic stroke and two were cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. We estimated an incidence of arterial ischemic stroke of 1.6/5,000 births and of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis of 7.2/100,000 births. There were two cases of recurrent stroke. Eight patients presented with symptoms while the remaining three were asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed. The most frequently registered symptoms (8/11) were seizures; in that, generalized clonic (3/8) and focal clonic (5/8). Strokes were more commonly left-sided (9/11), and the most affected artery was the left middle cerebral artery (8/11). Transfontanelle ultrasound was positive in most of the patients (10/11), and stroke was confirmed by cerebral magnetic resonance in all patients. Electroencephalographic recordings were carried out in five patients and were abnormal in three (focal abnormalities n=2, burst-suppression pattern n=1). Eight patients had previously identified risk factors for neonatal stroke which included obstetric and neonatal causes. Ten patients were followed up at outpatients setting; four patients developed motor deficits and one presented with epilepsy. Conclusions Although a modest and heterogeneous sample, this study emphasizes the need for a high level of suspicion when it comes to neonatal stroke, primarily in the presence of risk factors. The prevalence of neurological sequelae in our series supports the need of long-term follow-up and early intervention strategies

Double power law behavior in everyday phenomena

    Get PDF
We study similar statistical properties observed in distinct real world data. In particular, we focus on the power law (PL) distribution. We nd that some data is well tted by a single PL distribution whereas other phenomena force the use of two distinct PLs. This behavior is similar in, a priori, unrelated phenomena, such as catastrophes (terrorism, earthquakes) and variables associated to man-made systems, such as distribution of the number of words in texts or of the number of hits received by websites.N/

StemMapper: a curated gene expression database for stem cell lineage analysis.

Transcriptomic data have become a fundamental resource for stem cell (SC) biologists as well as for a wider research audience studying SC-related processes such as aging, embryonic development and prevalent diseases including cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. Access and analysis of the growing amount of freely available transcriptomics datasets for SCs, however, are not trivial tasks. Here, we present StemMapper, a manually curated gene expression database and comprehensive resource for SC research, built on integrated data for different lineages of human and mouse SCs. It is based on careful selection, standardized processing and stringent quality control of relevant transcriptomics datasets to minimize artefacts, and includes currently over 960 transcriptomes covering a broad range of SC types. Each of the integrated datasets was individually inspected and manually curated. StemMapper's user-friendly interface enables fast querying, comparison, and interactive visualization of quality-controlled SC gene expression data in a comprehensive manner. A proof-of-principle analysis discovering novel putative astrocyte/neural SC lineage markers exemplifies the utility of the integrated data resource. We believe that StemMapper can open the way for new insights and advances in SC research by greatly simplifying the access and analysis of SC transcriptomic data. Simulation and formal verification of industrial systems controllers

Actually, the safety control is one of the most important aspects studied by the international researchers, in the field of design and development of automated production systems due to social (avoid work accidents, ...), economics (machine stop time reduction, increase of productivity,...) and technological aspects (less risks of damage of the components,...). Some researchers of the Engineering School of University of Minho are also studying these aspects of safety control, using simulation and modelchecking techniques in the development of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) programs. The techniques currently used for the guarantee of automated production systems control safety are the Simulation and the Formal Verification. If the Simulation is faster to execute, has the limitation of considering only some system behavior evolution scenarios. Using Formal Verification it exists the advantage of testing all the possible system behavior evolution scenarios but, sometimes, it exists the limitation of the time necessary for the attainment of formal verification results. In this paper it is shown, as it is possible, and desirable, to conciliate these two techniques in the analysis of PLC programs. With the simultaneous use of these two techniques, the developed PLC programs are more robust and not subject to errors. It is desirable the use of simulation before using formal verification in the analysis of a system control program because with the simulation of some possible system behaviors it is possible to eliminate a set of program errors in reduced intervals of time and that would not happen if these errors were detected only through the use of formal verification techniques. Conciliating these two techniques it can be substantially reduced the time necessary for the attainment of results through the use of the formal verification technique. For the analysis of a system control program for simulation and formal verification it is used the Dymola for the Simulation (through the creation of system models with Modelica language) and UPPAAL (through the creation of system models with timed automata)

Complex order van der Pol oscillator

In this paper it is considered a complex order van der Pol oscillator. A complex derivative D®§|¯, with ®; ¯ 2 R+ is a generalization of the concept of integer derivative, where ® = 1; ¯ = 0: By applying the concept of complex derivative, we obtain a high-dimensional parameter space. Amplitude and period values of the periodic solutions of the complex order van der Pol oscillator, are studied for variation of these parameters.N/

Forced van der Pol oscillator of complex order

In this paper it is considered a complex order forced van der Pol oscillator. The complex derivative Dα±jβ, with α, β ∈ R+ is a generalization of the concept of integer derivative, where α = 1, β = 0. We compute amplitude and period values of the periodic solutions of the complex order forced van der Pol oscillator, for variation of distinct parameters such as forcing frequency, forcing amplitude and parameters α and β. We find interesting quasi-periodic motion for certain values of the forcing frequency. This type of behaviour is seen in the continuous forced van der Pol oscillator.N/
