    Get PDF
In recent years, the Smart City concept is emerging as a way to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve the overall quality of citizen life. The rise of Smart City solutions is encouraged by the increasing availability of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and crowd sensing technologies. This paper presents an IoT Crowd Sensing platform that offers a set of services to citizens by exploiting a network of bicycles as IoT probes. Based on a survey conducted to identify the most interesting bike-enabled services, the SmartBike platform provides: real time remote geo-location of users’ bikes, anti-theft service, information about traveled route, and air pollution monitoring. The proposed SmartBike platform is composed of three main components: the SmartBike mobile sensors for data collection installed on the bicycle; the end-user devices implementing the user interface for geo-location and anti-theft; and the SmartBike central servers for storing and processing detected data and providing a web interface for data visualization. The suitability of the platform was evaluated through the implementation of an initial prototype. Results demonstrate that the proposed SmartBike platform is able to provide the stated services, and, in addition, that the accuracy of the acquired air quality measurements is compatible with the one provided by the official environmental monitoring system of the city of Turin. The described platform will be adopted within a project promoted by the city of Turin, that aims at helping people making their mobility behavior more sustainable

Deep Learning Algorithm for Advanced Level-3 Inverse-Modeling of Silicon-Carbide Power MOSFET Devices

Inverse modelling with deep learning algorithms involves training deep architecture to predict device's parameters from its static behaviour. Inverse device modelling is suitable to reconstruct drifted physical parameters of devices temporally degraded or to retrieve physical configuration. There are many variables that can influence the performance of an inverse modelling method. In this work the authors propose a deep learning method trained for retrieving physical parameters of Level-3 model of Power Silicon-Carbide MOSFET (SiC Power MOS). The SiC devices are used in applications where classical silicon devices failed due to high-temperature or high switching capability. The key application of SiC power devices is in the automotive field (i.e. in the field of electrical vehicles). Due to physiological degradation or high-stressing environment, SiC Power MOS shows a significant drift of physical parameters which can be monitored by using inverse modelling. The aim of this work is to provide a possible deep learning-based solution for retrieving physical parameters of the SiC Power MOSFET. Preliminary results based on the retrieving of channel length of the device are reported. Channel length of power MOSFET is a key parameter involved in the static and dynamic behaviour of the device. The experimental results reported in this work confirmed the effectiveness of a multi-layer perceptron designed to retrieve this parameter.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, to be published on Journal of Physics: Conference Serie

The purpose of this study was to examine various lipid classes as well as the protein content in rainbow trout ovaries. A total of 80 samples of Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum 1792) were collected from Kokernag and Verinag hatcheries (Jammu and Kashmir, India) between 2017 and 2019. The mature stage in female fish had the highest gonadosomatic index (GSI) and minimal GSI in the spent stage. Higher lipid content of the ovary was reported during the mature stage (36%), as compared to other pre-breeding stages. Similarly, lipid classes also showed fluctuation during the development of the ovary. The lipid classes, i.e. glycolipids, free fatty acids, cholesterol and triglycerides, had a higher content in the mature stage, while the phospholipid content was higher in the mature stage. The protein content was also higher in the mature ovary than in the other developmental stages. The study provides reference values for various biochemical parameters in rainbow trout that could be useful for population monitoring programs and for the development of diets and management methods for fish production under controlled conditions

Predictive Power of the "Trigger Tool" for the detection of adverse events in general surgery: a multicenter observational validation study

    Get PDF
Background In spite of the global implementation of standardized surgical safety checklists and evidence-based practices, general surgery remains associated with a high residual risk of preventable perioperative complications and adverse events. This study was designed to validate the hypothesis that a new “Trigger Tool” represents a sensitive predictor of adverse events in general surgery. Methods An observational multicenter validation study was performed among 31 hospitals in Spain. The previously described “Trigger Tool” based on 40 specific triggers was applied to validate the predictive power of predicting adverse events in the perioperative care of surgical patients. A prediction model was used by means of a binary logistic regression analysis. Results The prevalence of adverse events among a total of 1,132 surgical cases included in this study was 31.53%. The “Trigger Tool” had a sensitivity and specificity of 86.27% and 79.55% respectively for predicting these adverse events. A total of 12 selected triggers of overall 40 triggers were identified for optimizing the predictive power of the “Trigger Tool”. Conclusions The “Trigger Tool” has a high predictive capacity for predicting adverse events in surgical procedures. We recommend a revision of the original 40 triggers to 12 selected triggers to optimize the predictive power of this tool, which will have to be validated in future studies

BACKGROUND: Little is known about current clinical practice concerning peri-operative red blood cell transfusion in neonates and small infants. Guidelines suggest transfusions based on haemoglobin thresholds ranging from 8.5 to 12 g dl-1, distinguishing between children from birth to day 7 (week 1), from day 8 to day 14 (week 2) or from day 15 (≥week 3) onwards. OBJECTIVE: To observe peri-operative red blood cell transfusion practice according to guidelines in relation to patient outcome. DESIGN: A multicentre observational study. SETTING: The NEonate-Children sTudy of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe (NECTARINE) trial recruited patients up to 60 weeks' postmenstrual age undergoing anaesthesia for surgical or diagnostic procedures from 165 centres in 31 European countries between March 2016 and January 2017. PATIENTS: The data included 5609 patients undergoing 6542 procedures. Inclusion criteria was a peri-operative red blood cell transfusion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary endpoint was the haemoglobin level triggering a transfusion for neonates in week 1, week 2 and week 3. Secondary endpoints were transfusion volumes, 'delta haemoglobin' (preprocedure - transfusion-triggering) and 30-day and 90-day morbidity and mortality. RESULTS: Peri-operative red blood cell transfusions were recorded during 447 procedures (6.9%). The median haemoglobin levels triggering a transfusion were 9.6 [IQR 8.7 to 10.9] g dl-1 for neonates in week 1, 9.6 [7.7 to 10.4] g dl-1 in week 2 and 8.0 [7.3 to 9.0] g dl-1 in week 3. The median transfusion volume was 17.1 [11.1 to 26.4] ml kg-1 with a median delta haemoglobin of 1.8 [0.0 to 3.6] g dl-1. Thirty-day morbidity was 47.8% with an overall mortality of 11.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate lower transfusion-triggering haemoglobin thresholds in clinical practice than suggested by current guidelines. The high morbidity and mortality of this NECTARINE sub-cohort calls for investigative action and evidence-based guidelines addressing peri-operative red blood cell transfusions strategies.
