Landscape changes and carbon sequestration in the Deilão Parish, Northeastern Portugal

Estimaram-se estoques de carbono ao nível da paisagem ao longo dos últimos 48 anos na freguesia de Deilão (4.197 ha), Distrito de Bragança, Nordeste de Portugal, com o objectivo de analisar a dinâmica do carbono sequestrado numa paisagem em transformação. Construíram-se cartas de uso do solo com base em coberturas aerofotográficas de 1958, 1968, 1980, 1992 e 2006. A classificação do uso do solo foi baseada no sistema COS2005 (Instituto Geográfico Português), sendo a estrutura da paisagem descrita por métricas da paisagem. A biomassa viva e a folhada, bem como os estoques de carbono foram estimados com base em equações de biomassa e carbono e em dados de inventários. A freguesia de Deilão apresentava sinais de abandono, com redução da área agrícola e aumento da área florestal. O carbono sequestrado aumentou de 20.572 tC em 1958 para 75.449 tC em 2006, alteração essa que corresponde a um incremento de 267% durante o período de tempo considerado. Corresponde também a uma taxa média anual de sequestro de 0,27 tC/ha/ano à escala da paisagem. As alterações recentes da paisagem na freguesia de Deilão são acompanhadas pelo aumento muito significativo do carbono fixado na paisagem

Audiobook- the paradigm of the portuguese publishing market

Initially, the audiobook was not a product to be marketed, being produced only for libraries, in order to allow access to information for the blind. In 2005, with the appearance of the first specialized audiobook, publishers in Portugal, the audiobooks began to be produced in order to be commercialized. The audiobook market in Portugal is small, having only 2 companies: Boca palavras que alimentam e a Companhia Nacional de Música. The Portuguese companies have very low sales volumes; which do not exceed a hundred thousand euros. The paper presents the business and production models of audiobooks in USA and proposes their adaptation to Portugal. In order to obtain the degree of acceptance of this format among the Portuguese society, two recordings of a book by a renowned Portuguese writer were made. The two records were made according to a set of technical requirements in order to ensure the quality of the audiobook. The two recordings were evaluated through a questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire are presented and analysed. From the analysis of the questionnaire, it seems that the Portuguese market of audiobooks has yet to be explored. It also seems that it worth the effort because Portuguese community is very open to new technologies and easily uses the internet market. Anyhow, it seems that some marketing campaigns are needed in order to change the actual preference of the printed book face to the virtual version.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Combining the Water Framework Directive with Agricultural Policy Scenarios: A Multi-Objective Analysis for the Future of Irrigated Agricultural in Portugal

It is clear that the successful management of water resources must take into account the influence of policies affecting the irrigated agriculture sector. Among these, the importance of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is well recognised. In Portugal, more than 606,000 hectares (INE 2001b) are allocated to irrigated agriculture, which accounts for 74.8% of all water uses (INAG 2002). To study the combined effect of these policies, two irrigated regions of Portugal, Baixo Alentejo and Lezíria do Tejo, were analysed in case studies. Multi-Criteria Decision Making models (MCDM) were applied to characterise farmers’ decision-making attitudes of the main irrigated agriculture systems of these regions. The implications of environmental (WFD) and agricultural (CAP) policy change are assessed by reproducing farmers’ decision-making behaviour. Simulation results indicate that changes in these policies are conducive to substantial adjustments within the irrigated agriculture sector. This study demonstrates that the consequences of implementing the WFD are dependent both on the water price level set by the WFD and on the agricultural policy strategy in place

Audiobooks business model - technologic challenges, case study

In English-speaking countries, the audiobook is a popular format and used very often. In Portugal the audiobook is an unknown format of the majority of the population, there are few audiobooks in Portuguese, and the ones that are found, are mostly in Brazilian Portuguese. With this work, we intend studying the business and production models present in the English-speaking countries, indicating the way for Portuguese companies to have success. In the course of this work, a preliminary recording was made, in order to know the difficulties related to the recording of an audiobook. The recording was provided to the University student community, to conduct a questionnaire about the quality of the recorded audiobook. Associação da empatia e do estresse ocupacional com o Burnout em profissionais da atenção primária em saúde

O Burnout é uma síndrome desencadeada pela exposição crônica a estressores interpessoais no trabalho e pode trazer consequências graves para a saúde dos profissionais e para o cuidado dos pacientes. O nível de empatia e o estresse ocupacional dos profissionais estão associados à síndrome, contudo pouco se sabe sobre qual desses fatores apresenta maior associação com o Burnout. O objetivo principal desse estudo foi investigar a associação da empatia e do estresse ocupacional com o Burnout de profissionais da atenção primária em saúde (APS). 348 trabalhadores responderam a versões online de escalas de estresse ocupacional, empatia, Burnout e questionário abordando aspectos sociodemográficos, histórico profissional e contexto de trabalho. As dimensões do estresse ocupacional Recompensa e Esforço tiveram maior peso na explicação da variância de Ilusão pelo Trabalho e Desgaste Psíquico, respectivamente, enquanto a Razão Esforço-recompensa foi a variável que mais contribuiu para explicar a presença de Nível Crítico de Burnout. Preocupação Empática foi a principal preditora para Indolência e Pontuação Total de Burnout. Por fim, maior idade, raça/cor preta, maior tempo de atuação na saúde e na APS, formação específica para APS, melhores condições materiais de trabalho, exercer coordenação de equipe, supervisão de estagiários ou residentes e atuar em equipe completa estiveram associados a menores níveis de Burnout. Recomendam-se intervenções em prol da saúde do trabalhador da APS que englobem tanto a sua empatia quanto estressores ocupacionais.Burnout is a syndrome triggered by chronic exposure to interpersonal stressors at work and can have serious consequences for professionals’ health and for patient care. The level of workers’ empathy and occupational stress are associated with the syndrome, however little is known about which of these factors has a greater association with Burnout. The main objective of this study was to investigate the association of empathy and occupational stress with Burnout of primary health care (PHC) professionals. 348 workers responded to online versions of occupational stress, empathy and burnout scales and a questionnaire addressing sociodemographic variables, professional history and work context. The dimensions of occupational stress Reward and Effort were the main predictors for Enthusiasm towards Job and Psychological Exhaustion, respectively, while the Effort-reward Ratio was the variable that most contributed to explain the presence of Critical Burnout Level. Empathic Concern was the main predictor for Indolence and Total Burnout Score. Finally, older age, black race/color, longer time working in health and PHC, specific training for PHC, better working conditions, exercising team coordination and supervision of trainees or residents and working in a full team were associated with lower levels of Burnout. It is recommended interventions for PHC workers’ health that include both their empathy and occupational stressors

Efeitos ambientais do abandono da agricultura em áreas de montanha

As paisagens das regiões de montanha em Portugal encontram-se em acelerada alteração por efeito do abandono da agricultura. Neste trabalho analisámos as modificações da composição e da configuração da paisagem nos últimos 50 anos em duas freguesias do nordeste de Portugal e os efeitos dessas alterações no risco de incêndio e no sequestro de carbono. A paisagem foi classificada e cartografada para os anos de 1958, 1968, 1978 e 1992/3 e 2005/6 e descrita através de métricas. O efeito da alteração da paisagem no comportamento do fogo foi avaliado na freguesia de França por modelação e simulação em FlamMap. O carbono fixado na paisagem foi analisado na freguesia de Deilão a partir da estimação da biomassa dos sistemas naturais e de produção presentes. Em ambas as freguesias houve uma redução acentuada na área agrícola e um aumento da área florestal. Estas alterações, do mesmo tipo, conduziram à diminuição da heterogeneidade em França e ao seu aumento em Deilão. Em França, as alterações na paisagem criaram condições para a ocorrência de incêndios de maior dimensão e intensidade ao longo do tempo. Em Deilão conduziram a um aumento de 267% no carbono sequestrado na paisagem e a stocks médios, em 2005, de 17.97t/ha. Concluiu-se que as alterações da paisagem de montanha no nordeste de Portugal causadas por abandono da agricultura afectaram a estrutura da paisagem de forma distinta de acordo com as suas condições biofísicas e que essas alterações aumentaram o risco de incêndio e aumentaram a fixação de carbono na paisagem

Desenvolvimento e avaliação das características psicométricas do inventário de avaliação das percepções dos professores acerca das necessidades ao nível da promoção de competências sociais e emocionais

The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of an assessment instrument on teachers' perceptions regarding the development of socio-emotional skills. Results revealed a consistent four-factor structure (School/teachers' needs for socio-emotional skills promotion; Needs regarding teaching-learning process; Difficulties in dealing with students' socio-emotional deficits, Socio-emotional needs related to teacher's initial training) with internal consistency values above .79. Confirmatory analyses revealed a good fit of the model to the data. Teachers reported having more needs at the school/ teachers conditions for the promotion of social and emotional needs, and less needs at the level of their Teachers' initial training. The instrument also showed to be sensitive in capturing teachers' perception of schooling social and emotional needs in terms of teachers' gender, pedagogic group and school level.O objectivo deste estudo foi avaliar as características psicométricas de um instrumento de avaliação das percepções dos professores acerca das suas necessidades na promoção das competências sociais e emocionais. Os resultados revelaram uma estrutura de quatro factores (Necessidades ao nível da escola/professor, necessidades ao nível do processo de ensino-aprendizagem, Dificuldades em lidar com défices sócio-emocionais dos alunos e Necessidades ao nível da formação inicial), com valores de consistência interna acima de 0,79. As análises confirmatórias revelaram bom ajustamento do modelo aos dados. Os professores revelaram sentir maiores dificuldades ao nível das condições da escola/ professores e menores ao nível da formação inicial. O instrumento revelou-se também sensível às diferenças de percepções em termos do género, grupo pedagógico, e nível de ensino
