Simulation System for the Wendelstein 7-X Safety Control System
The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) Safety Instrumented System (SIS) ensures personal
safety and investment protection. The development and implementation of the SIS
are based on the international safety standard for the process industry sector,
IEC 61511. The SIS exhibits a distributed and hierarchical organized
architecture consisting of a central Safety System (cSS) on the top and many
local Safety Systems (lSS) at the bottom. Each technical component or
diagnostic system potentially hazardous for the staff or for the device is
equipped with an lSS. The cSS is part of the central control system of W7-X.
Whereas the lSSs are responsible for the safety of each individual component,
the cSS ensures safety of the whole W7-X device. For every operation phase of
the W7-X experiment hard- and software updates for the SIS are mandatory. New
components with additional lSS functionality and additional safety signals have
to be integrated. Already established safety functions must be adapted and new
safety functions have to be integrated into the cSS. Finally, the safety
programs of the central and local safety systems have to be verified for every
development stage and validated against the safety requirement specification.
This contribution focuses on the application of a model based simulation system
for the whole SIS of W7-X. A brief introduction into the development process of
the SIS and its technical realization will be give followed by a description of
the design and implementation of the SIS simulation system using the framework
SIMIT (Siemens). Finally, first application experiences of this simulation
system for the preparation of the SIS for the upcoming operation phase OP 1.2b
of W7-X will be discussed

Expansion of a novel population of NK cells with low ribosome expression in juvenile dermatomyositis
Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a pediatric autoimmune disease associated with characteristic rash and proximal muscle weakness. To gain insight into differential lymphocyte gene expression in JDM, peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 4 new-onset JDM patients and 4 healthy controls were sorted into highly enriched lymphocyte populations for RNAseq analysis. NK cells from JDM patients had substantially greater differentially expressed genes (273) than T (57) and B (33) cells. Upregulated genes were associated with the innate immune response and cell cycle, while downregulated genes were associated with decreased ribosomal RNA. Suppressed ribosomal RNA in JDM NK cells was validated by measuring transcription and phosphorylation levels. We confirmed a population of low ribosome expressing NK cells in healthy adults and children. This population of low ribosome NK cells was substantially expanded in 6 treatment-naïve JDM patients and was associated with decreased NK cell degranulation. The enrichment of this NK low ribosome population was completely abrogated in JDM patients with quiescent disease. Together, these data suggest NK cells are highly activated in new-onset JDM patients with an increased population of low ribosome expressing NK cells, which correlates with decreased NK cell function and resolved with control of active disease
Collinear helium under periodic driving: stabilization of the asymmetric stretch orbit
The collinear eZe configuration of helium, with the electrons on opposite
sides of the nucleus, is studied in the presence of an external electromagnetic
(laser or microwave) field. We show that the classically unstable "asymmetric
stretch" orbit, on which doubly excited intrashell states of helium with
maximum interelectronic angle are anchored, can be stabilized by means of a
resonant driving where the frequency of the electromagnetic field equals the
frequency of Kepler-like oscillations along the orbit. A static magnetic field,
oriented parallel to the oscillating electric field of the driving, can be used
to enforce the stability of the configuration with respect to deviations from
collinearity. Quantum Floquet calculations within a collinear model of the
driven two-electron atom reveal the existence of nondispersive wave packets
localized on the stabilized asymmetric stretch orbit, for double excitations
corresponding to principal quantum numbers of the order of N > 10.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure
Tessellation-based stochastic modelling of 3D coating structures imaged with FIB-SEM tomography
To facilitate printing, coatings are typically applied to paperboard used for packaging to provide a good surface for application. To optimise the performance of the coating, it is important to understand the relationship between the microstructure of the material and its mass transport properties. In this work, three samples of paperboard coating are imaged using combined focused ion beam and scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) tomography data appropriately segmented to characterise the internal microstructure. These images are used to inform a parametric, tessellation-based stochastic three-dimensional model intended to mimic the irregular geometry of the particles that can be seen in the coating. Parameters for the model are estimated from the FIB-SEM image data, and we demonstrate good agreement between the real and virtual structures both in terms of geometrical measures and mass transport properties. The development of this model facilitates exploration of the relationship between the structure and its properties
Lorenz-like systems and classical dynamical equations with memory forcing: a new point of view for singling out the origin of chaos
A novel view for the emergence of chaos in Lorenz-like systems is presented.
For such purpose, the Lorenz problem is reformulated in a classical mechanical
form and it turns out to be equivalent to the problem of a damped and forced
one dimensional motion of a particle in a two-well potential, with a forcing
term depending on the ``memory'' of the particle past motion. The dynamics of
the original Lorenz system in the new particle phase space can then be
rewritten in terms of an one-dimensional first-exit-time problem. The emergence
of chaos turns out to be due to the discontinuous solutions of the
transcendental equation ruling the time for the particle to cross the
intermediate potential wall. The whole problem is tackled analytically deriving
a piecewise linearized Lorenz-like system which preserves all the essential

The GALFA-HI Compact Cloud Catalog
We present a catalog of 1964 isolated, compact neutral hydrogen clouds from
the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array Survey Data Release One (GALFA-HI DR1).
The clouds were identified by a custom machine-vision algorithm utilizing
Difference of Gaussian kernels to search for clouds smaller than 20'. The
clouds have velocities typically between |VLSR| = 20-400 km/s, linewidths of
2.5-35 km/s, and column densities ranging from 1 - 35 x 10^18 cm^-2. The
distances to the clouds in this catalog may cover several orders of magnitude,
so the masses may range from less than a Solar mass for clouds within the
Galactic disc, to greater than 10^4 Solar Masses for HVCs at the tip of the
Magellanic Stream. To search for trends, we separate the catalog into five
populations based on position, velocity, and linewidth: high velocity clouds
(HVCs); galaxy candidates; cold low velocity clouds (LVCs); warm, low
positive-velocity clouds in the third Galactic Quadrant; and the remaining warm
LVCs. The observed HVCs are found to be associated with previously-identified
HVC complexes. We do not observe a large population of isolated clouds at high
velocities as some models predict. We see evidence for distinct histories at
low velocities in detecting populations of clouds corotating with the Galactic
