Fast quantum information transfer with superconducting flux qubits coupled to a cavity
We present a way to realize quantum information transfer with superconducting
flux qubits coupled to a cavity. Because only resonant qubit-cavity interaction
and resonant qubit-pulse interaction are applied, the information transfer can
be performed much faster, when compared with the previous proposals. This
proposal does not require adjustment of the qubit level spacings during the
operation. Moreover, neither uniformity in the device parameters nor exact
placement of qubits in the cavity is needed by this proposal.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Numerical Methods for Multilattices
Among the efficient numerical methods based on atomistic models, the
quasicontinuum (QC) method has attracted growing interest in recent years. The
QC method was first developed for crystalline materials with Bravais lattice
and was later extended to multilattices (Tadmor et al, 1999). Another existing
numerical approach to modeling multilattices is homogenization. In the present
paper we review the existing numerical methods for multilattices and propose
another concurrent macro-to-micro method in the numerical homogenization
framework. We give a unified mathematical formulation of the new and the
existing methods and show their equivalence. We then consider extensions of the
proposed method to time-dependent problems and to random materials.Comment: 31 page
Quantum oscillations in adsorption energetics of atomic oxygen on Pb(111) ultrathin films: A density-functional theory study
Using first-principles calculations, we have systematically studied the
quantum size effects of ultrathin Pb(111) films on the adsorption energies and
diffusion energy barriers of oxygen atoms. For the on-surface adsorption of
oxygen atoms at different coverages, all the adsorption energies are found to
show bilayer oscillation behaviors. It is also found that the work function of
Pb(111) films still keeps the bilayer-oscillation behavior after the adsorption
of oxygen atoms, with the values being enlarged by 2.10 to 2.62 eV. For the
diffusion and penetration of the adsorbed oxygen atoms, it is found that the
most energetically favored paths are the same on different Pb(111) films. And
because of the modulation of quantum size effects, the corresponding energy
barriers are all oscillating with a bilayer period on different Pb(111) films.
Our studies indicate that the quantum size effect in ultrathin metal films can
modulate a lot of processes during surface oxidation
Activated O2 dissociation and formation of oxide islands on the Be(0001) surface: Another atomistic model for metal oxidation
By simulating the dissociation of O2 molecules on the Be(0001) surface using
the first-principles molecular dynamics approach, we propose a new atomistic
model for the surface oxidation of sp metals. In our model, only the
dissociation of the first oxygen molecule needs to overcome an energy barrier,
while the subsequent oxygen molecules dissociate barrierlessly around the
adsorption area. Consequently, oxide islands form on the metal surface, and
grow up in a lateral way. We also discover that the firstly dissociated oxygen
atoms are not so mobile on the Be(0001) surface, as on the Al(111) surface. Our
atomistic model enlarges the knowledge on metal surface oxidations by perfectly
explaining the initial stage during the surface oxidation of Be, and might be
applicable to some other sp metal surfaces.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Non-saturating large magnetoresistance in semimetals
The rapidly expanding class of quantum materials known as {\emph{topological
semimetals}} (TSM) display unique transport properties, including a striking
dependence of resistivity on applied magnetic field, that are of great interest
for both scientific and technological reasons. However, experimental signatures
that can identify or discern the dominant mechanism and connect to available
theories are scarce. Here we present the magnetic susceptibility (), the
tangent of the Hall angle () along with magnetoresistance in four
different non-magnetic semimetals with high mobilities, NbP, TaP, NbSb and
TaSb, all of which exhibit non-saturating large MR. We find that the
distinctly different temperature dependences, and the values of
in phosphides and antimonates serve as empirical criteria to
sort the MR from different origins: NbP and TaP being uncompensated semimetals
with linear dispersion, in which the non-saturating magnetoresistance arises
due to guiding center motion, while NbSb and TaSb being {\it
compensated} semimetals, with a magnetoresistance emerging from nearly perfect
charge compensation of two quadratic bands. Our results illustrate how a
combination of magnetotransport and susceptibility measurements may be used to
categorize the increasingly ubiquitous non-saturating large magnetoresistance

General relations of heavy quark-antiquark potentials induced by reparameterization invariance
A set of general relations between the spin-independent and spin-dependent
potentials of heavy quark and anti-quark interactions are derived from
reparameterization invariance in the Heavy Quark Effective Theory. It covers
the Gromes relation and includes some new interesting relations which are
useful in understanding the spin-independent and spin-dependent relativistic

Quantum Non-Demolition Bell State Measurement and N-party GHZ State Preparation in Quantum Dot
By exploiting the fermionic qubit parity measurement, we present a scheme to
realize quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement of Bell-states and generate
n-party GHZ state in quantum dot. Compared with the original protocol, the
required electron transfer before and after parity measurement can be
nonadiabatic, which may speed up the operation speed and make the omitting of
spin-orbit interaction more reasonable. This may help us to construct CNOT gate
without highly precise control of coupling as the way of D. Gottesman and I. L.

Service delivery interventions to increase uptake of voluntary medical male circumcision for HIV prevention: A systematic review.
BackgroundVoluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) remains an essential component of combination HIV prevention services, particularly in priority countries in sub-Saharan Africa. As VMMC programs seek to maximize impact and efficiency, and to support World Health Organization guidance, specific uptake-enhancing strategies are critical to identify.MethodsWe systematically reviewed the literature to evaluate the impact of service delivery interventions (e.g., facility layout, service co-location, mobile outreach) on VMMC uptake among adolescent and adult men. For the main effectiveness review, we searched for publications or conference abstracts that measured VMMC uptake or uptake of HIV testing or risk reduction counselling within VMMC services. We synthesized data by coding categories and outcomes. We also reviewed studies assessing acceptability, values/preferences, costs, and feasibility.ResultsFour randomized controlled trials and five observational studies were included in the effectiveness review. Studies took place in South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. They assessed a range of service delivery innovations, including community-, school-, and facility-based interventions. Overall, interventions increased VMMC uptake; some successfully improved uptake among age-specific subpopulations, but urban-rural stratification showed no clear trends. Interventions that increased adult men's uptake included mobile services (compared to static facilities), home-based testing with active referral follow-up, and facility-based HIV testing with enhanced comprehensive sexual education. Six acceptability studies suggested interventions were generally perceived to help men choose to get circumcised. Eleven cost studies suggested interventions create economies-of-scale and efficiencies. Three studies suggested such interventions were feasible, improving facility preparedness, service quality and quantity, and efficiencies.ConclusionsInnovative changes in male-centered VMMC services can improve adult men's and adolescent boys' VMMC uptake. Limited evidence on interventions that enhance access and acceptability show promising results, but evidence gaps persist due to inconsistent intervention definition and delivery, due in part to contextual relevance and limited age disaggregation
Economic compensation interventions to increase uptake of voluntary medical male circumcision for HIV prevention: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
BackgroundEconomic compensation interventions may help support higher voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) coverage in priority sub-Saharan African countries. To inform World Health Organization guidelines, we conducted a systematic review of economic compensation interventions to increase VMMC uptake.MethodsEconomic compensation interventions were defined as providing money or in-kind compensation, reimbursement for associated costs (e.g. travel, lost wages), or lottery entry. We searched five electronic databases and four scientific conferences for studies examining the impact of such interventions on VMMC uptake, HIV testing and safer-sex/risk-reduction counseling uptake within VMMC, community expectations about compensation, and potential coercion. We screened citations, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias in duplicate. We conducted random-effects meta-analysis. We also reviewed studies examining acceptability, values/preferences, costs, and feasibility.ResultsOf 2484 citations identified, five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and three non-randomized controlled trials met our eligibility criteria. Studies took place in Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Meta-analysis of four RCTs showed significant impact of any economic compensation on VMMC uptake (relative risk: 5.23, 95% CI: 3.13 to 8.76). RCTs of food/transport vouchers and conditional cash transfers generally showed increases in VMMC uptake, but lotteries, subsidized VMMC, and receiving a gift appeared somewhat less effective. Three non-randomized trials showed mixed impact. Six additional studies suggested economic compensation interventions were generally acceptable, valued for addressing key barriers, and motivating to men. However, some participants felt they were insufficiently motivating or necessary; one study suggested they might raise community suspicions. One study from South Africa found a program cost of US450-$1350 per HIV infection averted.ConclusionsEconomic compensation interventions, particularly transport/food vouchers, positively impacted VMMC uptake among adult men and were generally acceptable to potential clients. Carefully selected economic interventions may be a useful targeted strategy to enhance VMMC coverage
