In the modern world, human rights enjoy greater legitimacy, and the discourse of equality between sexes has acquired enough plausibility to be introduced in the form of institutionalized political practices. Even so, old and new forms of gender-based violence are occurring and even increasing worldwide. Gender-based violence occurs in all societies but many of its forms are still not explicitly addressed by European law and policy, this is the case with femi(ni)cide (femicide/feminicide). In this dissertation, I follow the feminist argument that maintains that if femi(ni)cide is not named, it is not because it does not exist, but it is necessary to name it in order to make it visible and create interventions against these crimes. Therefore, I work with the concept of femi(ni)cide for legal and political analysis, I argue that this concept is noteworthy to feminist theory, politics, and activism. My main research question in this article-based dissertation is: What is the performance of the concept of femi(ni)cide in political and legal spheres in the context of Europe? I am focusing on the birthplace region of modernity, Western Europe, where the legal, political, and academic discussion on femi(ni)cide is still limited. I work with a case study: femi(ni)cide in Germany. This research is informed by two main theoretical approaches: new feminist materialism and epistemologies of the South—in particular, in decolonial theory. I use both frameworks to try to contest Western, patriarchal, and colonial attitudes towards the discussion of femi(ni)cide in Europe. Some of the findings of this dissertation point out that colonial structures continue to permeate femi(ni)cide research in Europe and, that there is a danger of watering down the complexity of the concept of femi(ni)cide, thus draining it from its political power. Therefore, working with both, epistemologies of the South and new feminist materialism, provides tools to avoid reproducing colonial and patriarchal hierarchies while allowing one to work “with-in” complexity. With this dissertation I aim to contribute filling the academic gap on femi(ni)cide in Western Europe, to encourage further research on this matter, and to provide useful information for organizations dedicated to combat violence against women/gender-based violence

Tesi

Stress and Memory: Behavioral Effects and Neurobiological Mechanisms

Stress is a potent modulator of learning and memory processes. Although there have been a few attempts in the literature to explain the diversity of effects (including facilitating, impairing, and lack of effects) described for the impact of stress on memory function according to single classification criterion, they have proved insufficient to explain the whole complexity of effects. Here, we review the literature in the field of stress and memory interactions according to five selected classifying factors (source of stress, stressor duration, stressor intensity, stressor timing with regard to memory phase, and learning type) in an attempt to develop an integrative model to understand how stress affects memory function. Summarizing on those conditions in which there was enough information, we conclude that high stress levels, whether intrinsic (triggered by the cognitive challenge) or extrinsic (induced by conditions completely unrelated to the cognitive task), tend to facilitate Pavlovian conditioning (in a linear-asymptotic manner), while being deleterious for spatial/explicit information processing (which with regard to intrinsic stress levels follows an inverted U-shape effect). Moreover, after reviewing the literature, we conclude that all selected factors are essential to develop an integrative model that defines the outcome of stress effects in memory processes. In parallel, we provide a brief review of the main neurobiological mechanisms proposed to account for the different effects of stress in memory function. Glucocorticoids were found as a common mediating mechanism for both the facilitating and impairing actions of stress in different memory processes and phases. Among the brain regions implicated, the hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex were highlighted as critical for the mediation of stress effects

MAP17 predicts sensitivity to platinum-based therapy, EGFR inhibitors and the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib in lung adenocarcinoma

Background The high incidence and mortality of lung tumours is a major health problem. Therefore, the identification both of biomarkers predicting efficacy for therapies in use and of novel efficacious therapeutic agents is crucial to increase patient survival. MAP17 (PDZK1IP1) is a small membrane-bound protein whose upregulation is reported as a common feature in tumours from diverse histological origins. Furthermore, MAP17 is correlated with tumour progression. Go to: Methods We assessed the expression of MAP17 in preclinical models, including cell lines and patient-derived xenografts (PDXs), assessing its correlation with sensitivity to different standard-of-care drugs in lung adenocarcinoma, as well as novel drugs. At the clinical level, we subsequently correlated MAP17 expression in human tumours with patient response to these therapies. Go to: Results We show that MAP17 expression is induced during lung tumourigenesis, particularly in lung adenocarcinomas, and provide in vitro and in vivo evidence that MAP17 levels predict sensitivity to therapies currently under clinical use in adenocarcinoma tumours, including cisplatin, carboplatin and EGFR inhibitors. In addition, we show that MAP17 expression predicts proteasome inhibitor efficacy in this context and that bortezomib, an FDA-approved drug, may be a novel therapeutic approach for MAP17-overexpressing lung adenocarcinomas. Go to: Conclusions Our results indicate a potential prognostic role for MAP17 in lung tumours, with particular relevance in lung adenocarcinomas, and highlight the predictive pot0065ntial of this membrane-associated protein for platinum-based therapy and EGFR inhibitor efficacy. Furthermore, we propose bortezomib treatment as a novel and efficacious therapy for lung adenocarcinomas exhibiting high MAP17 expression

This report is intended to illustrate the supervised teaching practice developed within the Master Course in Preschool Education, in a private charitable organization, with a group of children four years of age. Considering the importance of the teaching process as educational strategies adopted, in this report, we emphasize the reflection as a framework for dialogue and rapprochement between people and contexts. In order to know more about the processes of learning, development of children and on the lines of action to be taken into account to promote dialogue and cooperation with local community members, working for the recovery of all of knowledge for the socio-cultural enrichment of the group. We emphasize perspectives of learning and development as a socioconstrutivste matrix, while building collaborative support of the educational process. Taking into account the guidelines of curriculum design of the institutions, we had as main objective to further knowledge about strategies that best could better help children to understand the activities and local traditions. From the methodological point of view we participant observation, as main technique of collecting data, obtained through field notes and photographic records, as well as analysis of documents provided by the institution. We proceed to the description and analysis of a set of four teaching-learning experiences promoted, earning us particular reflection the educational strategies that we use. The results point to the appreciation of the contributions of human and institutional resources in the local cultural and identity construction of children

Mangrovian Encounters between Epistemologies of the South and New (Feminist) Materialism

With the increased interest sparked across academia in both new materialism and epistemologies of the South, old colonial and patriarchal habits rear their vicious heads. On the one hand, feminist contributions are, in many cases, ignored or watered down in mainstream discussions in both approaches, pushing feminist political projects at the core of these epistemologies to the margins. On the other hand, the engagement in conversations and commitment to the ideas that emerge from the epistemologies of the South are limited or not recognized, a situation that contributes to perpetuating coloniality of knowledge. Accounting for these challenges, this paper puts into conversation epistemologies of the South (specifically focusing on theorists from the Americas) and new feminist materialism in terms of specific concepts such as dualism, difference, time, universality, body-land, and relationality. By showing both the affinities and differences between the two, this paper demonstrates the richness and diversity of arguments; furthermore, it investigates what new materialism has to do with decolonization and tropicality. This paper concludes by addressing the questions: to what extent and in what way might new (feminist) materialism need to be decolonized? And how does it speak to “tropical materialisms”? Although this paper does not specifically focus on the tropics, tropical images of thought such as the “mangrove,” are evoked throughout the text.</p
