    Anomalous Monism: Oscillating between Dogmas

    Davidson's anomalous monism, his argument for the identity between mental and physical event tokens, has been frequently attacked, usually demanding a higher degree of physicalist commitment. My objection runs in the opposite direction: the identities inferred by Davidson from mental causation, the nomological character of causality and the anomaly of the mental are philosophically problematic and, more dramatically, incompatible with his famous argument against the third dogma of empiricism, the separation of content from conceptual scheme. Given the anomaly of the mental and the absence of psychophysical laws, there are no conceptual resources to relate mental and physical predicates. We fall in the third dogma if we claim that the very same token event is mental and physical. One of the premises must be rejected: I will claim that we do not need a law to subsume cause and effect to be entitled to speak of causation. Davidson has never offered an argument to back this premise. Against such a dogma I will sketch some ideas pointing towards a different conception of causality, singularist and undetachable from explanatory practices

    Pruning rules for optimal runway sequencing

    This paper investigates runway sequencing for real world scenarios at one of the world's busiest airports, London Heathrow. Several pruning principles are introduced that enable significant reductions of the problem's average complexity, without compromising the optimality of the resulting sequences, nor compromising the modelling of important real world constraints and objectives. The pruning principles are generic and can be applied in a variety of heuristic, meta-heuristic or exact algorithms. They could also be applied to different runway configurations, as well as to different variants of the machine scheduling problem with sequence dependent setup times, the generic variant of the runway sequencing problem in this paper. They have been integrated into a dynamic program for runway sequencing, which has been shown to be able to generate optimal sequences for large scale problems at an extremely low computational cost, whilst considering complex non-linear and non-convex objective functions that offer significant flexibility to model real world preferences and real world constraints. The results shown here counter the proliferation of papers that claim that runway sequencing problems are too complex to solve exactly and therefore attempt to solve them heuristically

    Enhanced therapeutic efficacy of 5'deoxy-5-fluorouridine in 5-fluorouracil resistant head and neck tumours in relation to 5-fluorouracil metabolising enzymes.

    Four human head and neck xenograft (HNX) tumour lines grown in nude mice and two murine colon carcinomas (Colon 26 and 38) were tested for their sensitivity to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and its prodrug 5'deoxy-5-fluorouridine (Doxifluridine, 5'd-FUR). 5-FU sensitivity at the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) showed the following pattern; HNX-DU less than HNX-KE = HNX-E = HNX-G less than Colon 26 much less than Colon 38. The sensitivity pattern to 5'd-FUR was: HNX-DU less than HNX-G less than HNX-E less than HNX-KE less than Colon 38 less than Colon 26. For HNX-KE, HNX-E and Colon 26 an increase in therapeutic efficacy was observed with 5'd-FUR as compared to 5-FU; Colon 38 was as sensitive to 5'd-FUR as to 5-FU. Plasma pharmacokinetics of 5'd-FUR and 5-FU were comparable in normal and nude mice. Metabolism of 5-FU and 5'd-FUR was studied in the tumours. Conversion of 5'd-FUR to 5-FU was highest in Colon 26 and 15-20 times lower in HNX-DU, HNX-KE and Colon 38. The Km for 5'd-FUR in all tumours was 1-2 mM. Further anabolism of 5-FU to fluorouridine (FUR) was 5-10 times higher than that of 5-FU to FUR in HNX tumours and 3 times in the colon tumours. 5-FU conversion to FUMP via FUR had the following pattern: Colon 26 much greater than HNX-DU greater than HNX-G greater than HNX-E greater than HNX-KE much greater than Colon 38; of 5-FU to FdUMP via FUdR: Colon 26 greater than HNX-DU = HNX-KE greater than HNX-E greater than HNX-G = Colon 38; and that of 5-FU to FUMP catalysed by orotate phosphoribosyl transferase (OPRT); Colon 26 greater than or equal to Colon 38 greater than HNX-KE greater than HNX-E = HNX-DU = HNX-G. Only those tumours with a relatively high activity of OPRT were sensitive to 5'd-FUR. Colon 26, which has a very high rate of pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase, showed a relatively high increase in the therapeutic efficacy. It is concluded that a low rate of pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase is enough to convert 5'd-FUR to 5-FU; further anabolism of 5-FU catalysed by OPRT may be limiting and explain the differential sensitivity

    Band termination in the N=Z Odd-Odd Nucleus 46V

    High spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 46V have been identified. At low spin, the T=1 isobaric analogue states of 46Ti are established up to I = 6+. Other high spin states, including the band terminating state, are tentatively assigned to the same T=1 band. The T=0 band built on the low-lying 3+ isomer is observed up to the 1f7/2-shell termination at I=15. Both signatures of a negative parity T=0 band are observed up to the terminating states at I = 16- and I = 17-, respectively. The structure of this band is interpreted as a particle-hole excitation from the 1d3/2 shell. Spherical shell model calculations are found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental results.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Effects of the binding of a Helianthus annuus lectin to Candida albicans cell wall on biofilm development and adhesion to host cells

    Background: In our previous study, we isolated and characterized a lectin called Helja from Helianthus annuus (sunflower) and then, in a further study, demonstrated its antifungal activity against Candida spp. Since Candida infections are a major health concern due to the increasing emergence of antifungal resistant strains, the search for new antifungal agents offers a promising opportunity for improving the treatment strategies against candidiasis. Purpose: The aim of this work was to get insights about the mechanism of action of Helja, an antifungal lectin of H. annuus, and to explore its ability to inhibit Candida albicans biofilm development and adherence to buccal epithelial cells (BEC). Study design/methods: Yeast viability was evaluated by Evans Blue uptake and counting of colony forming units (CFU). The yeast cell integrity was assessed using Calcofluor White (CFW) as a cell wall perturbing agent and sorbitol as osmotic protectant. The induction of oxidative stress was evaluated using 3,3′-diaminobenzidine (DAB) for detection of hydrogen peroxide. The adherence was determined by counting the yeast cells attached to BEC after methylene blue staining. The biofilms were developed on polystyrene microplates, visualized by confocal laser scanning microscopy and the viable biomass was quantified by CFU counting. The binding lectin-Candida was assessed using Helja conjugated to fluorescein isothiocyanate (Helja-FITC) and simultaneous staining with CFW. The cellular surface hydrophobicity (CSH) was determined using a microbial adhesion to hydrocarbons method. Results: C. albicans cells treated with 0.1 µg/µl of Helja showed a drastic decrease in yeast survival. The lectin affected the fungal cell integrity, induced the production of hydrogen peroxide and inhibited the morphological transition from yeast to filamentous forms. Helja caused a significant reduction of adherent cells and a decrease in biofilm biomass and coverage area. The treatment with the protein also reduced the surface hydrophobicity of fungal cells. We show the binding of Helja-FITC to yeast cells distributed as a thin outer layer to the CFW signal, and this interaction was displaced by mannose and Concanavalin A. Conclusion: The results demonstrate the interaction of Helja with the mannoproteins of C. albicans cell wall, the disruption of the cell integrity, the induction of oxidative stress, the inhibition of the morphological transition from yeast to filamentous forms and the fungal cell viability loss. The binding Helja-Candida also provides a possible explanation of the lectin effect on cell adherence, biofilm development and CSH, relevant features related to virulence of the pathogen.Fil: del Rio, Marianela Victoria.     Excited States in 52Fe and the Origin of the Yrast Trap at I=12+

    Excited states in 52Fe have been determined up to spin 10\hbar in the reaction 28Si + 28Si at 115 MeV by using \gamma-ray spectroscopy methods at the GASP array. The excitation energy of the yrast 10+ state has been determined to be 7.381 MeV, almost 0.5 MeV above the well known \beta+-decaying yrast 12+ state, definitely confirming the nature of its isomeric character. The mean lifetimes of the states have been measured by using the Doppler Shift Attenuation method.
