Fractal characterisation of electrodispersed gold electrodes

    Get PDF
The fractal dimension of the surface, Ds, of thin columnar gold electrodeposits (surface roughness factor 50–100) grown on gold wire cathodes by electroreducing hydrous gold oxide layers has been determined by measuring the diffusion controlled current of the Fe(CN)4−6/Fe(CN)3−6 reaction. The diffusion current (I) vs. time (t) relationships obeyed a Iαt−α dependence with Ds = 2α + 1. The initial Ds, value is 2.5 ± 0.1, and decreases to 2.3 ± 0.1 by keeping the deposit in contact with the electrolyte solution at 298 K due to the smoothing of the rough metal surface by surface diffusion.

Akgul, Gokcen/0000-0001-6101-7971WOS: 000502504300025Biochar, a carbonaceous material derived from biomass by pyrolysis, stands out as environmentally friendly and low-cost carbon material with specific features that could be exploited for various applications, which range from the safe and long-term storage of carbon in the environment, to soil improvement and energy storage. It can be envisaged that the desired properties of biochar could be fine-tuned by chemical and structural modification for enhanced performance of this sustainable material. in this work, biochar derived from industrial tea waste was valorized by surface functionalization and graphitization to enhance the electrochemical properties and achieve higher capacitance. Several oxidative treatments have been assessed; waste-free UV-generated ozone exposure, nitric acid mediated oxidation, and harsh treatment with sulfonitric acid mixture. Subsequently, metal impregnation was investigated to reveal Fe-mediated catalytic effect on the graphitization process, allowing use of lower temperatures with consequent energy saving. the effects on BC were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transformed infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under air or nitrogen gas, physisorption, and electrochemical measurements. the structural design with chemical and physical treatments increased the capacitance from 0.041 to 7.734 F/g at the scan rate of 10 mV/s for pristine and modified biochar, respectively. Clinical exome sequencing is a powerful approach to overcome the wide clinical and genetic heterogeneity of mucopolysaccharidosis. These data could be useful for prenatal diagnosis of MPS VII, genetic counseling, and preimplantation genetic testing

Thyroid hormone resistance index and mortality in euthyroid subjects: [email protected] study.

    No full text
It has been proposed that a mild form of acquired resistance to thyroid hormone may occur in the general population. Its clinical significance remains largely unknown. The objective of the study was to explore whether a newly described thyroid hormone resistance index is associated with the risk of mortality in a sample of community-dwelling euthyroid subjects representative of the adult population of Spain. Longitudinal observational study including 3750 individuals, free of thyroid disease, TPO antibodies-negative ( We used the Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index (TFQI) as a marker of resistance to thyroid hormone. The study population was grouped into categories according to their TFQI values at baseline. Fatal events were ascertained from the national death registry (end of follow-up December 2016). A total of 231 deaths were recorded during an average follow-up of 7.3 years. Compared with the category with the highest sensitivity to free thyroxine (TFQI ≤ p5) (reference), the relative risk of mortality in the categories with TFQI > p5 and ≤p25; >p25 and ≤p50; >p50 and ≤p75; >p75 and ≤p95 and >p95 were 1.01, (0.47-2.19), 1.42 (0.68-2.97), 1.54 (0.74-3.22), 1.47 (0.70-3.11) and 2.61 (1.16-5.89), respectively (P for trend 0.003). The association remained significant after multivariate adjustment of the data (P for trend 0.017). A thyroid hormone resistance index focused on deviations of the average pituitary response to thyroid hormones may be associated with all-cause mortality independently of other conventional risk factors and comorbidities
