New technologies to enhance quality and safety of table eggs: ultra-violet treatment and modified atmosphere packaging

In the present study the effect of ultra-violet (UV) treatment alone and in combination with 100% CO2 modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) was evaluated both on the survival of naturally occurring bacteria, as well as on quality parameters of table eggs during 28 days of storage at 21\ub0C. Table eggs were collected from the conveyor belt after the UV module, and placed on carton trays. A representative number of carton trays were packed in a high barrier multilayer pouch filled with 100% CO2. All eggs were stored at 21\ub0C and analysed at 0, 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of storage. Eggs not treated with UV and not packed were also included. On the eggshells total colony count, total coliforms and faecal coliforms counts, as well as the detection of Salmonella spp. were investigated. Moreover, chemical-functional parameters such as weight loss, albumen pH and Haugh Unit (HU) were evaluated. The total colony count on UV treated table eggs was approximately 1 log10 CFU/g lower than untreated eggs (2.27 vs 3.29 log10 CFU/g). During storage, CO2 packed eggs maintained the initial values of HU, whereas the albumen pH decreased up to 1.5-2 points in comparison to unpacked eggs. The UV treatment was effective in reducing the total colony count on the surface of table eggs. MAP showed a great potential in maintaining/enhance the technological properties of egg constituents (higher foam stability of the albumen for meringue preparation) without significantly impacting on the microbial load of table eggs

Surgical management of Glioma Grade 4: technical update from the neuro-oncology section of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch®): a systematic review

Purpose: The extent of resection (EOR) is an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) in adult patients with Glioma Grade 4 (GG4). The aim of the neuro-oncology section of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch®) was to provide a general overview of the current trends and technical tools to reach this goal. Methods: A systematic review was performed. The results were divided and ordered, by an expert team of surgeons, to assess the Class of Evidence (CE) and Strength of Recommendation (SR) of perioperative drugs management, imaging, surgery, intraoperative imaging, estimation of EOR, surgery at tumor progression and surgery in elderly patients. Results: A total of 352 studies were identified, including 299 retrospective studies and 53 reviews/meta-analysis. The use of Dexamethasone and the avoidance of prophylaxis with anti-seizure medications reached a CE I and SR A. A preoperative imaging standard protocol was defined with CE II and SR B and usefulness of an early postoperative MRI, with CE II and SR B. The EOR was defined the strongest independent risk factor for both OS and tumor recurrence with CE II and SR B. For intraoperative imaging only the use of 5-ALA reached a CE II and SR B. The estimation of EOR was established to be fundamental in planning postoperative adjuvant treatments with CE II and SR B and the stereotactic image-guided brain biopsy to be the procedure of choice when an extensive surgical resection is not feasible (CE II and SR B). Conclusions: A growing number of evidences evidence support the role of maximal safe resection as primary OS predictor in GG4 patients. The ongoing development of intraoperative techniques for a precise real-time identification of peritumoral functional pathways enables surgeons to maximize EOR minimizing the post-operative morbidity

Factors associated with referral for osteoporosis care in men: a real-life study of a nationwide dataset

    No full text
In the present observational cohort study in 4902 men and 9804 women, we found that the factors associated with osteoporosis care utilization in men were comorbidities, adjuvant hormonal therapy for prostate cancer, vertebral or hip fractures, and glucocorticoid treatment.INTRODUCTION: Male osteoporosis is associated with an important clinical and economic burden worldwide; nevertheless, undertreatment of men with osteoporosis is common. Understanding the factors associated with referral to bone specialists may help to define future interventions to improve access to osteoporosis care for male patients.METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a nationwide cohort (DeFRACalc79 database). DeFRACalc79 is a tool that estimates the fracture risk by considering clinical and densitometric risk factors, including the presence of prior hip or vertebral and non-vertebral or non-hip fractures. We compared the clinical characteristics of male individuals with an age-matched cohort of women. Propensity score generation with a 2:1 female-to-male ratio was performed using a logistic regression model to age-match the cohorts.RESULTS: We analyzed a sample of 4902 men at high risk for osteoporosis. We found that the factors associated with osteoporosis care utilization in men were the presence of comorbidities (OR 1.939, 95% CI 1.799-2.090), adjuvant hormonal therapy for prostate cancer (OR 1.482, 95% CI 1.315-1.670), the presence of vertebral or hip fractures (OR 1.490, 95% CI 1.378-1.611), and glucocorticoid treatment (OR 2.573, 95% CI 2.274-2.832).CONCLUSIONS: Men are more commonly referred to the bone specialist with a prevalent fragility fracture and/or diagnosis of secondary osteoporosis as compared with women. Our study suggests that there is a lack of screening for the primary prevention of osteoporosis in men as compared with that in women

A sensitivity study of VBS and diboson WW to dimension-6 EFT operators at the LHC

We present a parton-level study of electro-weak production of vector-boson pairs at the Large Hadron Collider, establishing the sensitivity to a set of dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). Different final states are statistically combined, and we discuss how the orthogonality and interdependence of different analyses must be considered to obtain the most stringent constraints. The main novelties of our study are the inclusion of SMEFT effects in non-resonant diagrams and in irreducible QCD backgrounds, and an exhaustive template analysis of optimal observables for each operator and process considered. We also assess for the first time the sensitivity of vector-boson-scattering searches in semileptonic final states.Comment: Final version after editor's revision. Improved text descriptions and plots styling. Added subparagraph in chapter 5.1 discussing the impact of SMEFT corrections in propagators which was previously ignore
