    Covering dimension and finite-to-one maps

    Hurewicz' characterized the dimension of separable metrizable spaces by means of finite-to-one maps. We investigate whether this characterization also holds in the class of compact F-spaces of weight c. Our main result is that, assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, an n-dimensional compact F-space of weight c is the continuous image of a zero-dimensional compact Hausdorff space by an at most 2n-to-1 map

    The Herschel-Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI): instrument and pre-launch testing

    This paper describes the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI), to be launched onboard of ESA's Herschel Space Observatory, by 2008. It includes the first results from the instrument level tests. The instrument is designed to be electronically tuneable over a wide and continuous frequency range in the Far Infrared, with velocity resolutions better than 0.1 km/s with a high sensitivity. This will enable detailed investigations of a wide variety of astronomical sources, ranging from solar system objects, star formation regions to nuclei of galaxies. The instrument comprises 5 frequency bands covering 480-1150 GHz with SIS mixers and a sixth dual frequency band, for the 1410-1910 GHz range, with Hot Electron Bolometer Mixers (HEB). The Local Oscillator (LO) subsystem consists of a dedicated Ka-band synthesizer followed by 7 times 2 chains of frequency multipliers, 2 chains for each frequency band. A pair of Auto-Correlators and a pair of Acousto-Optic spectrometers process the two IF signals from the dual-polarization front-ends to provide instantaneous frequency coverage of 4 GHz, with a set of resolutions (140 kHz to 1 MHz), better than < 0.1 km/s. After a successful qualification program, the flight instrument was delivered and entered the testing phase at satellite level. We will also report on the pre-flight test and calibration results together with the expected in-flight performance

    A parallel 2-opt algorithm for the traveling salesman problem

    We present a scalable parallel local search algorithm based on data parallelism. The concept of distributed neighborhood structures is introduced, and applied to the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Our parallel local search algorithm finds the same quality solutions as the classical 2-opt algorithm and has a good speed-up. The algorithm is implemented on a Parsytec GCel, consisting of 512 transputers. Its performance is empirically analyzed for TSP instances with several thousands of cities.     Monitoring Parkinson's disease symptoms during daily life:a feasibility study

    Parkinson's disease symptoms are most often charted using the MDS-UPDRS. Limitations of this approach include the subjective character of the assessments and a discrepant performance in the clinic compared to the home situation. Continuous monitoring using wearable devices is believed to eventually replace this golden standard, but measurements often lack a parallel ground truth or are only tested in lab settings. To overcome these limitations, this study explores the feasibility of a newly developed Parkinson's disease monitoring system, which aims to measure Parkinson's disease symptoms during daily life by combining wearable sensors with an experience sampling method application. Twenty patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease participated in this study. During a period of two consecutive weeks, participants had to wear three wearable sensors and had to complete questionnaires at seven semi-random moments per day on their mobile phone. Wearable sensors collected objective movement data, and the questionnaires containing questions about amongst others Parkinson's disease symptoms served as parallel ground truth. Results showed that participants wore the wearable sensors during 94% of the instructed timeframe and even beyond. Furthermore, questionnaire completion rates were high (79,1%) and participants evaluated the monitoring system positively. A preliminary analysis showed that sensor data could reliably predict subjectively reported OFF moments. These results show that our Parkinson's disease monitoring system is a feasible method to use in a diverse Parkinson's disease population for at least a period of two weeks. For longer use, the monitoring system may be too intense and wearing comfort needs to be optimized.</p

    Anterior cingulate cortex glutamate and its association with striatal functioning during cognitive control

    Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by structural, functional and neurochemical alterations of the fronto-striatal circuits and by deficits in cognitive control. In particular, ADHD has been associated with impairments in top-down fronto-striatal glutamate-signalling. However, it is unknown whether fronto-striatal glutamate is related to cognitive control dysfunction. Here we explored whether and how anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) glutamate relates to striatal BOLD-responses during cognitive control. We used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy to evaluate glutamate-to-creatine ratios in 62 participants (probands with ADHD n=19, unaffected siblings n=24 and typical controls n=19, mean age=20.4). Spectra were collected from the ACC and the dorsal striatum and glutamate-to-creatine ratios were extracted. Thirty-two participants additionally took part in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) Stroop task to investigate neural responses during cognitive control. Given small sample sizes we report all effects with p<0.10 along with effect sizes. ADHD subjects showed decreased glutamate-to-creatine ratios in the ACC (F=3.81, p=0.059, ηp2=0.104; medium to large effect-size) compared with controls. Importantly, decreased ACC glutamate-to-creatine ratios were associated with increased striatal BOLD-responses during cognitive control (rho=-0.41, p=0.019; medium effect-size), independent of diagnosis. Increased striatal responses tended to be associated with more errors during the task and more hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms (rho=0.34, p=0.058 and rho=0.33, p=0.068, respectively); the latter two being correlated too (rho=0.37, p=0.037), all with medium effect sizes. Our results suggest that ACC glutamate in ADHD might be associated with striatal (dys)functioning during the Stroop task, supporting the role of fronto-striatal glutamate in cognitive control
