    Eigenvalue Methods for Interpolation Bases

    Get PDF
This thesis investigates eigenvalue techniques for the location of roots of polynomials expressed in the Lagrange basis. Polynomial approximations to functions arise in almost all areas of computational mathematics, since polynomial expressions can be manipulated in ways that the original function cannot. Polynomials are most often expressed in the monomial basis; however, in many applications polynomials are constructed by interpolating data at a series ofpoints. The roots of such polynomial interpolants can be found by computing the eigenvalues of a generalized companion matrix pair constructed directly from the values of the interpolant. This affords the opportunity to work with polynomials expressed directly in the interpolation basis in which they were posed, avoiding the often ill-conditioned transformation between bases. Working within this framework, this thesis demonstrates that computing the roots of polynomials via these companion matrices is numerically stable, and the matrices involved can be reduced in such a way as to significantly lower the number of operations required to obtain the roots. Through examination of these various techniques, this thesis offers insight into the speed, stability, and accuracy of rootfinding algorithms for polynomials expressed in alternative bases

‘My favourite things to do’ and ‘my favourite people’: Exploring salient aspects of children’s self-concept

This study explores the potential of the ‘draw-and-write’ method for inviting children to communicate salient aspects of their self-concept. Irish primary school children aged 10–13 years drew and wrote about their favourite people and things to do (social and active self). Children drew and described many salient activities (39 in total) and people – including pets. Results suggest that widely used, adult-constructed self-esteem scales for children, while multidimensional, are limited, and that ‘draw-and-write’ is an effective multimodal method with which children can express their social and active self-concepts

Dispenda is one of the agencies that has general function as administrative and public service provider related to taxes and retributions, one of managed taxes is entertainment tax. Contributions of entertainment tax managed by the local revenue office for the last three years are relatively increasing and always reaching the target. However, these contributions are not accompanied by taxpayers compliance to fullfil their tax obligations. This study will discuss the mechanism and obstacles of entertainment tax collection in the local revenue office. This study was using qualitative descriptive design. The results from this study show that implementation of entertainment tax collection has been good enough, based on public service quality indicators and tax collection policy concepts that have been used majorly

Basal-Plane Nonlinear Susceptibility: A Direct Probe of the Single-Ion Physics in URu2Si2

The microscopic nature of the hidden order state in URu2Si2 is dependent on the low-energy configurations of the uranium ions, and there is currently no consensus on whether it is predominantly 5f^2 or 5f^3. Here we show that measurement of the basal-plane nonlinear susceptibility can resolve this issue; its sign at low-temperatures is a distinguishing factor. We calculate the linear and nonlinear susceptibilities for specific 5f^2 and 5f^3 crystal-field schemes that are consistent with current experiment. Because of its dual magnetic and orbital character, a \Gamma_5 magnetic non-Kramers doublet ground-state of the U ion can be identified by χ1c(T)χ3(T)\chi_1^c(T) \propto \chi_3^\perp(T) where we have determined the constant of proportionality for URu2Si2.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Vascular health in children and adolescents: effects of obesity and diabetes

    Get PDF
The foundations for cardiovascular disease in adults are laid in childhood and accelerated by the presence of comorbid conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Early detection of vascular dysfunction is an important clinical objective to identify those at risk for subsequent cardiovascular morbidity and events, and to initiate behavioral and medical interventions to reduce risk. Typically, cardiovascular screening is recommended for young adults, especially in people with a family history of cardiovascular conditions. Children and adolescents were once considered to be at low risk, but with the growing health concerns related to sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and obesity, cardiovascular screening may be needed earlier so that interventions to improve cardiovascular health can be initiated. This review describes comorbid conditions that increase cardiovascular risk in youth, namely obesity and diabetes, and describes noninvasive methods to objectively detect vascular disease and quantify vascular function and structure through measurements of endothelial function, arterial compliance, and intima-media thickness. Additionally, current strategies directed toward prevention of vascular disease in these populations, including exercise, dietary interventions and pharmacological therapy are described

Muslim Javanese village is one of the muslim community often called as migrant communities or minority in Denpasar. In the 2014 legislative elections, muslim Javanese village has been successful delivering one of their representative from Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) as a member of Denpasar legislator. Political phenomena of muslim Javanese village with their identity, raising political identity to be utilize political parties, specifically PKS in Denpasar as a tool of political struggle. The purpose of this study is to determine and describe the political identity of muslim Javanese village to PKS in Denpasar city. The method for this research is descriptive qualitative. The data collection are using the method of observation, in-depth interview, and documents. The conclusion of this research is the political identity of muslim Javanese village to PKS done by affiliated become cadre, rooter, and PKS voter. The political support of muslim Javanese village, impact on strengthening PKS as a identity-based parties in Denpasar
