Thunder and Powder: May They Never Meet! Lightning Conductors at the Esplanade Powder Magazine, Quebec City
Archaeological excavations carried out at the Esplanade powder magazine in Quebec City have revealed the remains of three successive lighting conductor systems. These 19th-century remains are closely examined in the light of contemporary literature and compared with the military instructions concerning the subject. Their presence highlights the efforts made by military engineers of the time to safeguard contents, buildings, and people from the hazards inherent to the storage of explosive materials in powder magazines

Adenovirus 5 and chimeric adenovirus 5/F35 employ distinct B-lymphocyte intracellular trafficking routes that are independent of their cognate cell surface receptor
AbstractGene transfer applications with adenovirus (Ad) type 5 are limited by its native tropism, hampering their use in several cell types. To address this limitation, several Ad vectors bearing chimeric fiber have been produced to take advantage of the different cellular receptors used by other subgroups of Ads. In this study, we have compared the transduction efficiency of Ad5 and the chimeric Ad5/F35 in primary human B lymphocytes and B-cell lines as a function of the developmental stage. We found that transduction efficiencies of the two Ads differ independently of their targeted cellular receptor but are related to the intracellular localization of the virus. In efficiently transduced cells, Ads were localized in early endosomes or cytosol, whereas in poorly transduced cells they were localized within late endosomes/lysosomes. Finally, we demonstrate that treatment of cells with phosphatase inhibitors known to redirect endocytosis towards caveolae, increased Ad5/F35 transduction efficiency

Analog programming of CMOS-compatible AlO/TiO memristor at 4.2 K after metal-insulator transition suppression by cryogenic reforming
The exploration of memristors' behavior at cryogenic temperatures has become
crucial due to the growing interest in quantum computing and cryogenic
electronics. In this context, our study focuses on the characterization at
cryogenic temperatures (4.2 K) of TiO-based memristors
fabricated with a CMOS-compatible etch-back process. We demonstrate a so-called
cryogenic reforming (CR) technique performed at 4.2 K to overcome the
well-known metal-insulator transition (MIT) which limits the analog behavior of
memristors at low temperatures. This cryogenic reforming process was found to
be reproducible and led to a durable suppression of the MIT. This process
allowed to reduce by approximately 20% the voltages required to perform DC
resistive switching at 4.2 K. Additionally, conduction mechanism studies of
memristors before and after cryogenic reforming from 4.2 K to 300 K revealed
different behaviors above 100 K, indicating a potential change in the
conductive filament stoichiometry. The reformed devices exhibit a conductance
level that is 50 times higher than ambient-formed memristor, and the conduction
drop between 300 K and 4.2 K is 100 times smaller, indicating the effectiveness
of the reforming process. More importantly, CR enables analog programming at
4.2 K with typical read voltages. Suppressing the MIT improved the analog
switching dynamics of the memristor leading to approximately 250% larger on/off
ratios during long-term depression (LTD)/long-term potentiation (LTP)
resistance tuning. This enhancement opens up the possibility of using
TiO-based memristors to be used as synapses in neuromorphic
computing at cryogenic temperatures
Innovating in Teaching Collaborative Practice with a Large Student Cohort at Université de Montréal
UniversiteÌ de MontreÌal implemented an interprofessional education (IPE) curriculum on collaborative practice in a large cohort of students (>1,100) from 10 health sciences and psychosocial sciences training programs. It is made up of three one-credit undergraduate courses (CSS1900, CSS2900, CSS3900) spanning the first 3 years of training. The course content and activities aim for development of the six competency domains identified by the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative. This paper describes the IPE curriculum and highlights the features contributing to its success and originality. Among main success key factors were: administrative cooperation among participating faculties, educators eager to develop innovative approaches, extensive use of clinical situations conducive to knowledge and skill application, strong logistic support, close cooperation with health care delivery organizations, and partnership between clinicians and patients. A distinguishing feature of this IPE curriculum is the concept of partnership in care between the patient and caregivers. Patientsâ representatives were involved in course planning, and patients were trained to become patients-as-trainers (PT) and cofacilitate interprofessional discussion workshops. They give feed- back to students regarding integration and application of the patient partnership concept from a patientâs point of view.
