Applications of acoustics in the measurement of coal slab thickness
The determination of the possibility of employing acoustic waves at ultrasonic frequencies for measurements of thicknesses of slabs of coal backed by shale is investigated. Fundamental information concerning the acoustical properties of coal, and the relationship between these properties and the structural and compositional parameters used to characterize coal samples was also sought. Recent tests at Langley with a University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) skin friction balance
The experience at LaRC with the University of Tennessee Space Institute skin friction balances is summarized. The Karman-Schoenherr flat plate skin friction formulation is included for comparison. It is concluded that the balance is capable of operation in environments as diverse as cryogenic, transonic, high-shear rate of the 0.3 meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel, and high-temperature supersonic environment of the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel. Asymmetric Dark Matter from a GeV Hidden Sector
Asymmetric Dark Matter (ADM) models relate the dark matter density to the
baryon asymmetry, so that a natural mass scale for ADM is around a few GeV. In
existing models of ADM, this mass scale is unexplained; here we generate this
GeV scale for dark matter (DM) from the weak scale via gauge kinetic mixing
with a new Abelian dark force. In addition, this dark sector provides an
efficient mechanism for suppressing the symmetric abundance of DM through
annihilations to the dark photon. We augment this sector with a higher
dimensional operator responsible for communicating the baryon asymmetry to the
dark sector. Our framework also provides DM candidate for gauge mediation
models. It results in a direct detection cross section of interest for current
experiments: sigma less than or similar to 10^{-42} cm^2 for DM masses in the
range 1 - 15 GeV.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure
Inversion of spinning sound fields
A method is presented for the reconstruction of rotating monopole source
distributions using acoustic pressures measured on a sideline parallel to the
source axis. The method requires no \textit{a priori} assumptions about the
source other than that its strength at the frequency of interest vary
sinusoidally in azimuth on the source disc so that the radiated acoustic field
is composed of a single circumferential mode. When multiple azimuthal modes are
present, the acoustic field can be decomposed into azimuthal modes and the
method applied to each mode in sequence.
The method proceeds in two stages, first finding an intermediate line source
derived from the source distribution and then inverting this line source to
find the radial variation of source strength. A far-field form of the radiation
integrals is derived, showing that the far field pressure is a band-limited
Fourier transform of the line source, establishing a limit on the quality of
source reconstruction which can be achieved using far-field measurements. The
method is applied to simulated data representing wind-tunnel testing of a
ducted rotor system (tip Mach number~0.74) and to control of noise from an
automotive cooling fan (tip Mach number~0.14), studies which have appeared in

Titanium-nitrogen reaction investigated for application to gettering systems
Titanium is one of several gettering materials available for removing nitrogen from inert gases. The reaction rate of titanium-metal sponge and nitrogen in argon-nitrogen mixtures was studied at 900 degrees C. The rate was found to depend upon the partial pressure of nitrogen in the gas phase. Quantum Films Adsorbed on Graphite: Third and Fourth Helium Layers
Using a path-integral Monte Carlo method for simulating superfluid quantum
films, we investigate helium layers adsorbed on a substrate consisting of
graphite plus two solid helium layers. Our results for the promotion densities
and the dependence of the superfluid density on coverage are in agreement with
experiment. We can also explain certain features of the measured heat capacity

Dynamics and calcium association to the N-terminal regulatory domain of human cardiac troponin C: a multiscale computational study.
Troponin C (TnC) is an important regulatory molecule in cardiomyocytes. Calcium binding to site II in TnC initiates a series of molecular events that result in muscle contraction. The most direct change upon Ca(2+) binding is an opening motion of the molecule that exposes a hydrophobic patch on the surface allowing for Troponin I to bind. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to elucidate the dynamics of this crucial protein in three different states: apo, Ca(2+)-bound, and Ca(2+)-TnI-bound. Dynamics between the states are compared, and the Ca(2+)-bound system is investigated for opening motions. On the basis of the simulations, NMR chemical shifts and order parameters are calculated and compared with experimental observables. Agreement indicates that the simulations sample the relevant dynamics of the system. Brownian dynamics simulations are used to investigate the calcium association of TnC. We find that calcium binding gives rise to correlative motions involving the EF hand and collective motions conducive of formation of the TnI-binding interface. We furthermore indicate the essential role of electrostatic steering in facilitating diffusion-limited binding of Ca(2+)
The interaction of unidirectional winds with an isolated barchan sand dune
Velocity profile measurements are determined on and around a barchan dune model inserted in the roughness layer on the tunnel floor. A theoretical investigation is made into the factors influencing the rate of sand flow around the dune. Flow visualization techniques are employed in the mapping of streamlines of flow on the dune's surface. Maps of erosion and deposition of sand are constructed for the barchan model, utilizing both flow visualization techniques and friction velocities calculated from the measured velocity profiles. The sediment budget found experimentally for the model is compared to predicted and observed results reported. The comparison shows fairly good agreement between the experimentally determined and predicted sediment budgets
