The equation of state of neutron star matter and the symmetry energy
We present an overview of microscopical calculations of the Equation of State
(EOS) of neutron matter performed using Quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We
focus to the role of the model of the three-neutron force in the high-density
part of the EOS up to a few times the saturation density. We also discuss the
interplay between the symmetry energy and the neutron star mass-radius
relation.
The combination of theoretical models of the EOS with recent neutron stars
observations permits us to constrain the value of the symmetry energy and its
slope. We show that astrophysical observations are starting to provide
important insights into the properties of neutron star matter.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure, talk given at the 11th International Conference on

Ab initio calculation of the Hoyle state
The Hoyle state plays a crucial role in the hydrogen burning of stars heavier
than our sun and in the production of carbon and other elements necessary for
life. This excited state of the carbon-12 nucleus was postulated by Hoyle [1]
as a necessary ingredient for the fusion of three alpha particles to produce
carbon at stellar temperatures. Although the Hoyle state was seen
experimentally more than a half century ago [2,3], nuclear theorists have not
yet uncovered the nature of this state from first principles. In this letter we
report the first ab initio calculation of the low-lying states of carbon-12
using supercomputer lattice simulations and a theoretical framework known as
effective field theory. In addition to the ground state and excited spin-2
state, we find a resonance at -85(3) MeV with all of the properties of the
Hoyle state and in agreement with the experimentally observed energy. These
lattice simulations provide insight into the structure of this unique state and
new clues as to the amount of fine-tuning needed in nature for the production
of carbon in stars.Comment: 4 pp, 3 eps figs, version accepted for publication in Physical Review

Many-body effects in 16O(e,e'p)
Effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations on exclusive reactions on
closed-shell nuclei leading to single-hole states are studied using
( MeV, ) as an example. The quasi-hole wave
function, calculated from the overlap of translationally invariant many-body
variational wave functions containing realistic spatial, spin and isospin
correlations, seems to describe the initial state of the struck proton
accurately inside the nucleus, however it is too large at the surface. The
effect of short-range correlations on the final state is found to be largely
cancelled by the increase in the transparency for the struck proton. It is
estimated that the values of the spectroscopic factors obtained with the DWIA
may increase by a few percent due to correlation effects in the final state.Comment: 21 Pages, PHY-7849-TH-9
Time-Dependent Current Partition in Mesoscopic Conductors
The currents at the terminals of a mesoscopic conductor are evaluated in the
presence of slowly oscillating potentials applied to the contacts of the
sample. The need to find a charge and current conserving solution to this
dynamic current partition problem is emphasized. We present results for the
electro-chemical admittance describing the long range Coulomb interaction in a
Hartree approach. For multiply connected samples we discuss the symmetry of the
admittance under reversal of an Aharonov-Bohm flux.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures upon request, IBM RC 1971
Model calculations of doubly closed shell nuclei in CBF theory III. j-j coupling and isospin dependence
Correlated Basis Function theory and Fermi Hypernetted Chain technique are
extended to study medium-heavy, doubly closed shell nuclei in j-j coupling
scheme, with different single particle wave functions for protons and neutrons
and isospin dependent two-body correlations. Central semirealistic interactions
are used. Ground state energies, one-body densities, distribution functions and
momentum distributions are calculated for 12C, 16O, 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb
nuclei. The values of the ground state energies provided by isospin dependent
correlations are lower than those obtained with isospin independent
correlations. In finite nuclear systems, the two--body Euler equations provide
correlation functions variationally more effective than those obtained with the
same technique in infinite nuclear matter.Comment: 29 Latex pages plus 6 Postscript figure
Effects of state dependent correlations on nucleon density and momentum distributions
The proton momentum and density distributions of closed shell nuclei are
calculated within a model treating short--range correlations up to first order
in the cluster expansion. The validity of the model is verified by comparing
the results obtained with purely scalar correlations with those produced by
finite nuclei Fermi Hypernetted Chain calculations. State dependent
correlations are used to calculate momentum and density distributions of 12C,
16O, 40Ca, and 48Ca, and the effects of their tensor components are studied.Comment: 16 pages, latex, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Spin susceptibility of neutron matter at zero temperature
The Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo method is applied to compute the
spin susceptibility and the compressibility of neutron matter at zero
temperature. Results are given for realistic interactions which include both a
two-body potential of the Argonne type and the Urbana IX three-body potential.
Simulations have been carried out for about 60 neutrons. We find an overall
reduction of the spin susceptibilty by about a factor 3 with respect to the
Pauli susceptibility for a wide range of densities. Results for the
compressibility of neutron matter are also presented and compared with other
available estimates obtained for semirealistic nucleon-nucleon interactions by
using other techniques
