Recognition of Ribosomal RNA Sites in DNA, I. Analysis of the E. coli System
The evidence recently presented of specific hybridization between bacterial ribosomal RNA and homologous DNA1-3 has indicated the possibility of a biochemical approach to the problem of the identification of ribosomal RNA sites in DNA. A difficulty in this approach is that while the specific role of the RNA in the hybridization is open to experimental test, the critical evidence of the unique involvement of presumptive DNA sites is not easily attainable
Angiostrongylus cantonensis eosinophilic meningitis
AbstractIn the past 50 years, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the most common cause of eosinophilic meningitis, has spread from Southeast Asia to the South Pacific, Africa, India, the Caribbean, and recently, to Australia and North America, mainly carried by cargo ship rats. Humans are accidental, “dead-end” hosts infected by eating larvae from snails, slugs, or contaminated, uncooked vegetables. These larvae migrate to the brain, spinal cord, and nerve roots, causing eosinophilia in both spinal fluid and peripheral blood. Infected patients present with severe headache, vomiting, paresthesias, weakness, and occasionally visual disturbances and extraocular muscular paralysis. Most patients have a full recovery; however, heavy infections can lead to chronic, disabling disease and even death. There is no proven treatment for this disease. In the authors' experience, corticosteroids have been helpful in severe cases to relieve intracranial pressure as well as neurologic symptoms due to inflammatory responses to migrating and eventually dying worms
C Compiler Targeting the Java Virtual Machine
One of the major drawbacks in the field of computer software development has been the inability for applications to compile once and execute across many different platforms. With the emergence of the Internet and the networking of many different platforms, the Java programming language and the Java Platform was created by Sun Microsystems to address this Write Once, Run Anywhere problem. What sets a compiled Java program apart from programs compiled from other high level languages is the ability of a Java Virtual Machine to execute the compiled Java program on any platform, as long as the Java Virtual Machine is running on top of that platform. Java\u27s cross platform capabilities can be extended to other high level languages such as C. The main objective of our project is to implement a compiler targeting the Java Platform for a subset of the C language. This will allow code written in that subset of C to be compiled into Java Virtual Machine instructions, also known as JVM bytecode, which can then be executed on a Java Virtual Machine running on any platform. The reader is assumed to be intimately familiar with compiler construction, the use of the flex scanner generator, the use of the GNU bison parser generator, and the structure and implementation of the Java Virtual Machine

Sawer is a symbolic communication expressed on Sundanese wedding tradition. Sawer means spreading wealth like water fountain. This ritual is leading by juru sawer, using properties such as leaves, flowers, grains, and coins. This article explores meanings contained in sawer ritual: rice/grains symbolizes food happiness, sirih leaves symbolizes harmony, yellow color symbolizes golden which means noble, flowers symbolize aromatic smell, and coins symbolizes wealth. From communication perspectives, tradition was perceived as a means of transmitting message. Sawer expressed transcendental communication, relationship with people, and metaphysical communication
Pengaruh Keterampilan Menyimak Dan Intelligence Quotient Terhadap Prestasi Belajar Siswa
Menyimak (listening), sebagai komunikasi langsung, merupakan salah satu aspek dari empat perilaku komunikasi insani, termasuk dalam penyampaian materi pada proses belajar mengajar di sekolah. Dalam hal ini, setiap siswa diyakini memiliki keterampilan menyimak yang berbeda di dalam proses belajar mengajar tadi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, berdasarkan hasil uji koefisien jalur, terdapat pengaruh keterampilan menyimak terhadap prestasi belajar siswa yang signifikan, juga terdapat pengaruh IQ terhadap prestasi belajar siswa yang signifikan. Namun, pengaruh keterampilan menyimak terhadap IQ tidak signifikan. Begitu juga berdasarkan uji analisis regresi, diperoleh hasil yang sama. Adapun pengaruh gabungan antara keterampilan menyimak dan IQ terhadap prestasi belajar sebesar 10,2% saja. Kesimpulan penelitian adalah prestasi belajar ditentukan secara langsung oleh keterampilan menyimak dan IQ. Semakin tinggi keterampilan menyimak dan IQ maka semakin tinggi pula prestasi belajarnya
Autonomous hazard detection and avoidance
During GFY 91, Draper Laboratory was awarded a task by NASA-JSC under contract number NAS9-18426 to study and evaluate the potential for achieving safe autonomous landings on Mars using an on-board autonomous hazard detection and avoidance (AHDA) system. This report describes the results of that study. The AHDA task had four objectives: to demonstrate, via a closed-loop simulation, the ability to autonomously select safe landing sites and the ability to maneuver to the selected site; to identify key issues in the development of AHDA systems; to produce strawman designs for AHDA sensors and algorithms; and to perform initial trade studies leading to better understanding of the effect of sensor/terrain/viewing parameters on AHDA algorithm performance. This report summarizes the progress made during the first year, with primary emphasis on describing the tools developed for simulating a closed-loop AHDA landing. Some cursory performance evaluation results are also presented
