Low Temperature Measurements by Infrared Spectroscopy in CoFeO Ceramic
In this paper results of new far-infrared and middle-infrared measurements
(wavenumber range of 4000cm-1 - 100cm-1) in the range of the temperature from
300K to 8K of the CoFe2O4 ceramic are presented. The bands positions and their
shapes are the same in the wide temperature range. The quality of the sample
was investigated by X-ray, EDS and EPMA studies. The CoFe2O4 reveals the cubic
structure (Fd-3m) in the temperature range from 85K to 360 K without any traces
of distortion. On the current level of knowledge the polycrystalline CoFe2O4
does not exhibit phase transition in the temperature range from 8 K to 300 K.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Lactococcus lactis mutants resistant to lactococcin A and garvicin Q reveal missense mutations in the sugar transport domain of the mannose phosphotransferase system
Lactococcin A is a bacteriocin from Lactococcus lactis that permeabilizes the membrane of sensitive lactococcal cells and requires the presence of the membrane-bound components IIC and IID of the mannose phosphotransferase system (man-PTS). Recently, it was reported through cryo-electron microscopy analyses of man-PTS and several bacteriocins fused to a maltose-binding protein, including lactococcin A, that these bacteriocins create pores by inserting themselves between the Core and Vmotif domains of man-PTS. In our study, we obtained a dozen spontaneous mutants of L. lactis IL1403 resistant to lactococcin A. All but one of the mutants of IL1403 have mutations located in the genes encoding the IIC or IID proteins. These mutations also resulted in resistance to garvicin Q, a bacteriocin from Lactococcus garvieae with a broad inhibition spectrum and very little sequence homology to lactococcin A. Missense mutations were found in the sugar transport domain of man-PTS of bacteriocin-resistant IL1403 mutants, which also impeded the uptake of mannose. When lactococcin A, garvicin Q, or pediocin PA-1, an anti-listerial bacteriocin, were fused to a maltose-binding protein, we observed reduced or no antibacterial activity. Taken together, the precise mechanism of action of bacteriocins using the man-PTS remains to be fully understood
Tribological performance of an H-DLC coating prepared by PECVD
Carbon-based coatings are of wide interest due to their application in machine elements subjected to continuous contact where fluid lubricant films are not permitted. This paper describes the tribological performance under dry conditions of duplex layered H-DLC coating sequentially deposited by microwave excited plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition on AISI 52100 steel. The architecture of the coating comprised Cr, WC, and DLC (a-C:H) with a total thickness of 2.8 μm and compressive residual stress very close to 1 GPa. Surface hardness was approximately 22 GPa and its reduced elastic modulus around 180 GPa. Scratch tests indicated a well adhered coating achieving a critical load of 80 N. The effect of normal load on the friction and wear behaviours were investigated with steel pins sliding against the actual coating under dry conditions at room temperature (20 ± 2°C) and 35-50% RH. The results show that coefficient of friction of the coating decreased from 0.21 to 0.13 values with the increase in the applied loads (10-50 N). Specific wear rates of the surface coating also decrease with the increase in the same range of applied loads. Maximum and minimum values were 14 × 10-8 and 5.5 × 10-8 mm-3/N m, respectively. Through Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy it was confirmed the carbon-carbon contact, due to the tribolayer formation on the wear scars of the coating and pin. In order to further corroborate the experimental observations regarding the graphitisation behaviour, the existing mathematical relationships to determine the graphitisation temperature of the coating/steel contact as well as the flash temperature were used
In vitro and in vivo studies on biocompatibility of carbon fibres
In the present study we focused on the in vitro and in vivo evaluation of two types of carbon fibres (CFs): hydroxyapatite modified carbon fibres and porous carbon fibres. Porous CFs used as scaffold for tissues regeneration could simultaneously serve as a support for drug delivery or biologically active agents which would stimulate the tissue growth; while addition of nanohydroxyapatite to CFs precursor can modify their biological properties (such as bioactivity) without subsequent surface modifications, making the process cost and time effective. Presented results indicated that fibre modification with HAp promoted formation of apatite on the fibre surface during incubation in simulated body fluid. The materials biocompatibility was determined by culturing human osteoblast-like cells of the line MG 63 in contact with both types of CFs. Both tested materials gave good support to adhesion and growth of bone-derived cells. Materials were implanted into the skeletal rat muscle and a comparative analysis of tissue reaction to the presence of the two types of CFs was done. Activities of marker metabolic enzymes: cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) and acid phosphatase were examined to estimate the effect of implants on the metabolic state of surrounding tissues. Presented results evidence the biocompatibility of porous CFs and activity that stimulates the growth of connective tissues. In case of CFs modified with hydroxyapatite the time of inflammatory reaction was shorter than in case of traditional CFs

Estimating crop yields on the basis of ground hyperspectral measurements
The objective of the study was to compare the variability of
hyperspectral characteristics of winter oilseed rape and winter
spelt in the early growing season and to determine the usefulness
of vegetation indices obtained during the ground-based
hyperspectral measurements to predict the yield of these crops.
Field hyperspectral measurements were taken from the experimental
plots of three varieties of winter oilseed rape and four
winter spelt varieties during the fi rst part of the growing season.
The oilseed rape plots were sown at four dates in the autumn
and the spelt plots were fertilized in six schemes. Vegetation
indices were calculated on the basis of the reflectance factors
of the visible and near-infrared bands and their logarithmic
and first derivative transformations. Then, relationships between
the vegetation indices and oilseed rape and spelt yields
were analyzed. Among the unprocessed indices the highest R2
values (0.86) were obtained for the relationship between the
winter rape yield and NDVI550-775 recorded at the beginning of
the fl owering stage. The transformation of the spectral data
improved the relationship between the NDVI675-775, NDVI820-980,
SRWI870-1260 and yield up to 0.86. The winter spelt yield was
most strongly correlated with NDVI550-775 (R2=0.80) at the stem
elongation stage and the transformation of the spectral data
did not improve the relationship
