This paper reviews and evaluates the features of Greenstone, a free software tool, for creating and developing digital document collections. An analysis is given of the different interfaces that are available and problems related to information processing are identified

Constructing Web subject gateways using Dublin Core, RDF and Topic Maps

Specialised subject gateways have become an essential tool for locating and accessing digital information resources, with the added value of organisation and previous evaluation catering for the needs of the varying communities using these. Within the framework of a research project on the subject, a software tool has been developed that enables subject gateways to be developed and managed. General guidelines for the work were established which set out the main principles for the technical aspects of the application, on one hand, and on aspects of the treatment and management of information, on the other. All this has been integrated into a prototype model for developing software tools. The needs analysis established the conditions to be fulfilled by the application. A detailed study of the available options for the treatment of information on metadata proved that the best option was to use the Dublin Core, and that the metadata set should be included, in turn, in RDF tags, or in tags based on XML

Hybrid databases are a mixed development which allows the structured and non-structured data combination. The project shows an approach of this kind for a digital information service by means of the integration of different labelled metadata schemes in a hybrid database

It shows the development of a data processing tool, called Potnia, inclusive of the standard proposed by the DCMI (Dublin Core Metadata Initiative) and the topic maps paradigm registered to ISO 13250:2003. The proposal is divided into six sections: rationale and objectives, scenario building methodology, integration of both markup languages using RDF (Resource Description Framework); improvements over a previous version, and conclusions

This paper reviews the informational behavior of a community of university students during the development of a learning activity with a wiki. Through a case study, analyzes the data available on the wiki, and identifies patterns of creating and organizing content. The wiki study is also done within the information management framework proposed by Rowley. The findings support the conclusion that students apply the principle of economy of effort in their informational behavior, guided by the assessment requirements of that activity, and Rowley's proposal is not suitable for analyzing and evaluating educational processes technologically mediated

Comparative analysis of social bookmarking tools

However, there hasn't been a study of the information management model underlying social bookmarking tools, or technical capabilities necessary to meet the requirements of the model. This paper outlines a generic model based on the detection of features, and applies it on eight social bookmarking services. The results confirm that the performance of the services do not cover all features of the generic model, and the layer of social services is inadequate

The content management systems (content management systems, CMS) are software packages that allow to create, publish, and archive digital content. On these platforms play a key role classification schemes. This work evaluates the implementation of features for classification schemes in these tools. To do this, we have defined a test method, and have been studied ten software packages, with the aim of determining the different types of classification schemes supported, in relation to the content that they manage. The evaluation was carried out by heuristic analysis, presence / absence of functionalities, and numerical indicators. The results have been collected in comparative tables. The conclusions obtained are such that the solutions provided are incomplete and partial, and do not exploit the full potential underlying classification schemes

    Get PDF
Personal information management (PIM) raises some problems because the software tools that are used don’t adequately respond to user behaviour and activities. The concept and personal information management problems are reviewed, along with the software tools used for this task. A qualitative assessment explores whether an approach based on software tools for conceptual maps can address the problems discussed
