    The Perceptions of College Foreign Language Students Concerning their High School Foreign Language Preparation

    The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of college students studying a foreign language concerning their high school foreign language study experience. In particular, the study examined students’ beliefs about factors that may have contributed to a successful transition into the study of foreign languages in college. The population consisted of college students from post-secondary schools in West Virginia who took a foreign language class. Students completed a survey designed to obtain grade point average data, language course completion history, type of language studied, in addition to subjective perceptions about effects of academic preparation, motivation, and overall feelings of success in foreign language study. Additionally, they rated the level of agreements for various statements concerning their high school FL experience. Data were analyzed by comparing mean scores of Likert-scale items, and by the general content of free responses. Results showed that minimal differences existed in perceptions for students who studied abroad. Factors such as high language choice and availability most heavily influenced language choice in college. However, language choice itself was not a significant effect on responses

    Container Color and Compost Substrate Affect Root Zone Temperature and Growth of “Green Giant” Arborvitae

    Container-grown nursery crops are commonly exposed to root zone stress due to inadequate moisture and supraoptimal root zone temperature (RZT). Compost substrates can improve water and nutrient retention but plant responses can vary due to physical and chemical properties. Dark color containers absorb solar radiation through the container side wall leading to excessive heat buildup in the substrate, yet white containers can reduce RZT. Compost substrates and container color were examined for effects on RZT and growth of “Green Giant” arborvitae (Thuja standishii × plicata “Green Giant”). “Green Giant” arborvitae were transplanted into white or black containers (11.3 L) filled with a pine bark substrate (PB) or PB mixed with compost (C) at two different proportions [PB:C (9:1) and PB:C (7:3)]. White containers reduced maximum RZT by up to 7 °C and RZT remained above 38 °C for only 3% of the time compared to 21% of the time in black containers. Shoot growth increased over 50% in white containers compared to black containers. Compost increased substrate volumetric water content (VWC), increased shoot growth by up to 24%, and reduced total irrigation volume by up to 40%. Utilizing white containers for minimizing RZT and compost-amended substrates to maintain adequate VWC can improve root and shoot growth and overall crop quality while reducing nursery production inputs

    Container Type and Substrate Affect Root Zone Temperature and Growth of ‘Green Giant’ Arborvitae

    Root zone temperature (RZT) in nursery containers commonly exceeds ambient temperature during the growing season, negatively impacting crop growth and quality. Black nursery containers absorb radiant heat resulting in excessive RZT, yet other types of containers and different substrates can moderate RZT. We conducted studies in Tennessee and Alabama to evaluate the effects of container type and substrate on RZT and growth of ‘Green Giant’ arborvitae (Thuja standishii × plicata ‘Green Giant’). Trade gallon arborvitae were transplanted into black, white, or air pruning containers filled with pine bark (PB) or 4 PB: 1 peatmoss (v:v) (PB:PM). Plants grown in PB:PM were larger and had greater shoot and root biomass than plants grown in PB, likely due to increased volumetric water content. Plant growth response to container type varied by location, but white containers with PB:PM produced larger plants and greater biomass compared with the other container types. Root zone temperature was greatest in black containers and remained above 38 °C and 46 °C for 15% and 17% longer than white and air pruning containers, respectively. Utilizing light color containers in combination with substrates containing peatmoss can reduce RZT and increase substrate moisture content thus improving crop growth and quality

    The Effect of Instructor-Produced Videos as Supplemental Material for Training Visual Screening Procedures in Occupational Therapy Education

    The aim of this study was to explore student perceptions of instructor-produced videos to enhance knowledge, self-efficacy, and clinical skill with administering visual screening procedures. The video library, hosted by Vimeoℱ, consisted of 26 videos, with an average video duration less than 90 seconds. The videos were made available to occupational therapy students as supplemental material. Three focus groups consisting of 23 participants captured students’ perceived value of instructor-produced videos to enrich their learning. Three categories emerged from the data analysis including clinical application, learning preferences, and elements of video production. Students commented on how the videos positively influenced their ability to perform visual screening procedures, confidence with screening procedure administration and reasoning skills when evaluating client performance during visual screens. Students expressed how the videos appealed to their learning style (visual/kinesthetic). Also, they reported how the videos allowed them control over the pace of information delivery, the frequency of content delivery, and the environment in which they viewed the content. Students discussed elements of video production that enhanced their learning including actor characteristics and video use pragmatics

    Psychomotor stimulant self administration as a function of dosage per injection in the Rhesus monkey

    The relationships between drug dosage per injection and response rate, and drug dosage per injection and total daily drug intake were ascertained in Rhesus monkeys which self-administered cocaine, pipradrol, methylphenidate and phenmetrazine intravenously. The study demonstrated the monkeys would self-administer all of these compounds over a wide range of dosages. Furthermore, the magnitude of reinforcement, i.e., dosage per injection, and the rate of responding in self-administering these compounds were inversely related. However, total daily drug intake was independent of the dosage per injection over a wide range of dosages. The results indicate that either the subjects can compensate for large changes in unit dosage so that daily drug intake remains stable or that a direct effect of these compounds functions in limiting their self-administration.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/46379/1/213_2004_Article_BF00401789.pd

    Role of dopamine in dorsal medial prefrontal cortex in yohimbine-induced reinstatement of food seeking in rats

    In humans, relapse to maladaptive eating habits during dieting is often provoked by stress.Weadapted a drug relapse-reinstatement model to study the role of stress in relapse to food seeking (Nair et al., Prog. Neurobiol., 2009). In our model, the anxiogenic drug yohimbine, an alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist, that causes stress-like responses in humans and laboratory animals, reliably reinstates food seeking.Werecently found that yohimbine-induced reinstatement of food seeking is attenuated by systemic injections of SCH23390 (a D1-family receptor antagonist) but not clonidine (an alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist). Here, we studied the role of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in yohimbine-induced reinstatement. We trained food-restricted rats to lever-press for 35% high-fat pellets every other day (9–15 3 h sessions). We then extinguished the food-reinforced operant responding for 10–14 days by removing the pellets. Subsequently, we tested the effect of systemic injections of yohimbine (0, 2 mg/kg) on reinstatement of food seeking. In Exp. 1we found that yohimbine-induced reinstatement was associated with strong induction of Fos (a marker of neuronal activity) in the dorsal mPFC and weaker Fos induction in the ventral mPFC. In Exp. 2 we found that dorsal but not ventral mPFC injections of the D1-family receptor antagonist SCH23390 (0.5, 1.0g/side) decreased yohimbine-induced reinstatement of food seeking. Our data indicate a critical role of dorsal mPFC dopamine in reinstatement food seeking induced by the pharmacological stressor yohimbine

    The effects of stimulants and depressants on cocaine self-administration behavior in the Rhesus monkey

    The effects of acute intramuscular pretreatment with several dosages of a variety of centrally acting compounds on intravenous cocaine self-administration behavior were ascertained. Pretreatment with morphine and pentobarbital produced no change in this behavior until dosages (2.0 mg/kg and 15.0 mg/kg respectively) were administered which grossly depressed grooming, exploratory, and locomotor activity behaviors, d -amphetamine (0.5–4.0 mg/kg) and phenmetrazine (2.0–12.0 mg/kg) pretreatment produced a dose-related decrease in cocaine self-administration. Trifluoperazine in dosages of 0.01–0.1 mg/kg increased the frequency of this behavior; whereas, higher dosages (0.2, 0.4 mg/kg) grossly depressed behavior. Imipramine (10–50 mg/kg) produced a dose-related decrease in cocaine self-administration.     Antigen-Drug Conjugates as a Novel Therapeutic Class for the Treatment of Antigen-Specific Autoimmune Disorders

To access the final edited and published work see doi.org/10.1021/acs.molpharmaceut.9b00063.Multiple sclerosis represents the world’s most common cause of neurological disability in young people and is attributed to a loss of immune tolerance toward proteins of the myelin sheath. Typical treatment options for MS patients involve immunomodulatory drugs, which act non-specifically, resulting in global immunosuppression. The study discussed herein aims to demonstrate the efficacy of antigen-specific immunotherapies involving conjugation of disease causing auto-antigen, PLP139–151, and a potent immunosuppressant, dexamethasone. Antigen-drug conjugates (AgDCs) were formed using copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition chemistry with the inclusion of a hydrolyzable linker to maintain activity of released dexamethasone. Subcutaneous administration of this antigen-drug conjugate to SJL mice induced with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis protected the mice from symptom onset throughout the 25-day study, demonstrating enhanced efficacy in comparison to dexamethasone treatment.     The Making of a Self-Neglect Severity Scale

    Research in elder self-neglect has lagged behind that of other forms of mistreatment, despite the fact that self-neglect is the most common allegation reported to Adult Protective Service agencies throughout the US. The lack of a gold-standard to measure self-neglect has hampered efforts to study this phenomenon. Researchers designed the Self-neglect Severity Scale (SSS) based on interviews with Adult Protective Service workers and a national expert panel. The SSS is based on observation and interview and is administered in the home to include an environmental assessment. It was piloted, extensively field tested and then revised. The CREST SSS was developed using survey data and consultation with experts in the field. This instrument utilizes observer ratings, interview responses, and assesses subjects physical and environmental domains. It also assesses functional status as it relates to health and safety issues. After field and pilot testing the SSS was finalized and is currently undergoing reliability and validity testing. The CREST SSS was developed as a state scale to provide a common language for describing cases of self-neglect. It is the first self-neglect severity scale available to researchers. If found to be both reliable and valid it can be used in future intervention studies
