The third-instar of an unidentified sarcophagid, recovered from a mummified body of a 32-yr-old Thai male was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Although the morphological features of this larva are similar to the other sarcophagid larvae, some features could be helpful for species identification, which is a basic requirement for estimation of postmortem interval in forensic investigation. These features included number and arrangement of papillae on the anterior spiracle, structure of spines, size of circumspiracular tubercles at caudal segment and branching peculiarity of the posterior spiracular hairs. This information could benefit future identification of the sarcophagid larvae that exist in Thailand. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) energy conversion systems have been considered as a highly potential strategy for clean solar fuel production, simultaneously addressing the energy and environment challenges we are facing. Tremendous research efforts have been made to design and develop feasible unassisted PEC systems that can efficiently split water into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen with only the energy input of sunlight. A fundamental understanding of the concepts involved in PEC water splitting and energy conversion efficiency enhancement for solar fuel production is important for better system design. This review gives a concise overview of the unassisted PEC devices with some state-of-the-art progress toward efficient PEC devices for future sustainable solar energy utilization

Algumas alterações ultraestruturais superficiais nas larvas da mosca doméstica (Diptera: Muscidae) e da mosca varejeira (Diptera: Calliphoridae) induzidas pelo óleo de eucalipto

The ultrastructural superficial changes in third instar house fly (Musca domestica) and blow fly (Chrysomya megacephala) induced by eucalyptol oil were observed using scanning electron microscopy. Dipped in 0.902 g/ml eucalyptol for 30 sec, the larvae integument of both species showed significant aberrant appearance of the body surface, particularly swelling integument, bleb formation, partial breach and deformation of spines.

Scalable g-CN nanosheet powder catalyst was prepared by pyrolysis of dicyandiamide and ammonium chloride followed by ultra-sonication and freeze-drying. Nanosheet composite that combines the g-CN nanosheets and CaNbTaO nanosheets with various ratios were developed and applied as photocatalysts for solar hydrogen generation. Systematic studies reveal that the g-CN/CaNbTaO nanosheet composite with a mass ratio of 80:20 shows the best performance in photocatalytic H evolution under visible light-irradiation, which is more than 2.8 times out-performing bare g-CN bulk. The resulting nanosheets possess a high surface area of 96\ua0m/g, which provides abundance active sites for the photocatalytic activity. More importantly, the g-CN/CaNbTaO nanosheet composite shows efficient charge transfer kinetics at its interface, as evident by the photoluminescence measurement. The intimate interfacial connections and the synergistic effect between g-CN nanosheets and CaNbTaO nanosheets with cascading electrons are efficient in suppressing charge recombination and improving photocatalytic H evolution performance

PINEAPPLE JUICE AS AN AGENT FOR THE DIGESTION OF FISH PRIOR TO THE HARVESTING OF METACERCARIAE

Abstract. The efficacy of crude pineapple juice obtained from Ananus comosus in digesting fish for the harvesting of trematode metacercariae was investigated. No significant difference was found between the total number of metacercariae detected from fish (Cirrhina jullieni) digested by acid pepsin and those digested by freshly prepared pineapple juice that was kept for 15 days at a temperature of either -4 ˚C or -75 ˚C. However, fewer metacercariae were found when using juice that had been kept for more than 30 days. This study showed that freshly prepared pineapple juice kept frozen for 15 days could be used instead of commercial acid pepsin to digest fish for harvesting metacercariae, some of which could be used for further biological studies

Recent progress on visible light responsive heterojunctions for photocatalytic applications

Photocatalysis has attracted much attention in recent years due to its potential in solving energy and environmental issues. Even though numerous achievements have been made, the photocatalytic systems developed to date are still far from practical applications due to the low efficiency and poor durability. Efficient light absorption and charge separation are two of the key factors for the exploration of high performance photocatalytic systems, which is generally difficult to be obtained in a single photocatalyst. The combination of various materials to form heterojunctions provides an effective way to better harvest solar energy and to facilitate charge separation and transfer, thus enhancing the photocatalytic activity and stability. This review concisely summarizes the recent development of visible light responsive heterojunctions, including the preparation and performances of semiconductor/semiconductor junctions, semiconductor/cocatalyst junctions, semiconductor/metal junctions, semiconductor/non-metal junctions, and surface heterojunctions, and their mechanism for enhanced light harvesting and charge separation/transfer

    Melioidosis in Animals, Thailand, 2006–2010

We retrospectively estimated the incidence of culture-proven melioidosis in animals in Thailand during 2006–2010. The highest incidence was in goats (1.63/100,000/year), followed by incidence in pigs and cattle. The estimated incidence of melioidosis in humans in a given region paralleled that of melioidosis in goats
