Gender Needs Assessment for Mekelle City, Ethiopia

This needs assessment is focused explicitly on achieving gender equality and women's empowerment,. The research for this study was conducted in Mekelle, the capital city of the Tigray National Regional State, situated 780 kilometers north of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital. MCI's research has shown that attention to gender equality has increased across all sectors of Mekelle society. Nevertheless, significant gaps still exist. Violence against women, including rape, remains a problem.This needs assessment puts forward a number of practical interventions to help strengthen support for enforcing the rights of girls and women

Tasapainoilua kiistanalaisten terveysilmiöiden tutkimuksessa vaikuttavan tutkimuksen aikakaudella

Artikkelissa tarkastelemme tutkijoiden mahdollisuuksia vaikuttaa yhteiskunnallisen keskustelun kulkuun sekä säilyttää oma neutraalisuutensa suhteessa kiisteltyyn ja tunteita herättävään tutkimusaiheeseen.  Kysymyksenasettelu lähtee omista kokemuksistamme rokotekriittisyyden ja vaihtoehtohoitojen tutkijoina. Perehdymme kiisteltyjä terveysaiheita tarkastelevan tutkimuksen asemaan julkisessa keskustelussa ammentaen kirjallisuudesta, jossa on pohdittu kiistatutkijan rooleja, tutkijoita asiantuntijana julkisuudessa sekä tutkimuksen vaikuttavuutta. Artikkelimme jakaantuu kolmeen analyysin tasoon. Ensinnäkin tarkastelemme kehyksiä, joihin terveysilmiöitä tutkivat yhteiskuntatieteilijät raamitetaan julkisuuden areenoilla. Toiseksi tutkimme odotuksia, joita eri yleisöillä on kiisteltyjen terveysaiheiden tutkimusta kohtaan. Kolmanneksi pohdimme, millaisiin rooleihin media on meitä keskustelussa asettanut. Kiistanalaisten terveysaiheiden tutkimus on tasapainoilua. Artikkelissa pohdimme oman julkisen roolimme kautta tutkijaroolin monimuotoistumista erityisesti koronapandemian aikana. Hyödynnämme omaan tutkimukseemme liittyviä esimerkkejä analysoidessamme tasapainoilua vaikuttamisen ja puolueettomuuden välillä, joka väistämättä sisältyy kiistanalaisia aiheita käsittelevään ihmistieteelliseen tutkimukseen. Kysymme myös, millaisia uhkia ja mahdollisuuksia julkiseen keskusteluun osallistuminen tarjoaa tutkimuksen vaikuttavuuden kannalta

Negotiations of Science and Religion in Nordic Institutions: An Ethnographic Approach

This article explores how two seemingly contradictory global trends—scientific rationality and religious expressiveness—intersect and are negotiated in people’s lives in Nordic countries. We focus on Finland and Sweden, both countries with reputations of being highly secular and modernized welfare states. The article draws on our multi-sited ethnography in Finland and Sweden, including interviews with health practitioners, academics, and students identifying as Lutheran, Orthodox, Muslim, or anthroposophic. Building on new institutionalist World Society Theory, the article asks whether individuals perceive any conflict at the intersection of “science” and “religion”, and how they negotiate such a relationship while working or studying in universities and health clinics, prime sites of global secularism and scientific rationality. Our findings attest to people’s creative artistry while managing their religious identifications in a secular, Nordic, organizational culture in which religion is often constructed as old-fashioned or irrelevant. We identify and discuss three widespread modes of negotiation by which people discursively manage and account for the relationship between science and religion in their working space: segregation, estrangement, and incorporation. Such surprising similarities point to the effects of global institutionalized secularism and scientific rationality that shape the negotiation of people’s religious and spiritual identities, while also illustrating how local context must be factored into future, empirical research on discourses of science and religion

Bibliometrics in the research assessment exercise reports of Finnish universities and the relevant international perspectives

The study considered the methods of bibliometric analyses used in the research assessment exercise reports of Finnish universities, with six reports as the focus of analysis. The report on this research gives an overview of the process of implementation of research assessments and the differences in the methods used in these studies. Furthermore, to broaden the perspective, international cases (involving the UK and the Netherlands) are reported on, with the emphasis being on their assessment frameworks and criteria
