    Spanish adaptation of the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale-39 (SAQOL-39)

    [Abstract] Aim. The stroke and aphasia quality of life scale-39 is an interviewer administered questionnaire that has been developed and validated in the United Kingdom to be applied to patients with chronic aphasia as a consequence of a stroke. The objective of this article was to translate the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life-39 Scale (SAQOL-39) into Spanish language, and evaluate its acceptability and reliability. Methods. The cross-cultural adaptation of the SAQOL- 39 into Spanish was carried out by following the translation and back-translation method. Twenty three patients with long-term aphasia due to stroke were tested. The patients were interviewed twice in a period from 2 to 12 days. The acceptability of the Spanish SAQOL- 39 was evaluated by examining the floor/ceiling effects and the missing data. The reliability was assessed by Cronbach’s alpha (internal consistence) and intraclass correlation coefficients (test-retest reliability) for the overall scale and its subdomains. Results. There were no difficulties to translate the original version into Spanish. There was good acceptability demonstrated by minimal missing data and floor/ceiling effects. Test-retest reliability for the overall score, and the subscales scores was 0.949 (0.854-0.944). Internal consistency analysis by Cronbach’s α was 0.950 (0.851-0.900). Conclusion. This small scale study provided preliminary evidence for the acceptability and reliability of the Spanish version of the SAQOL-39. Further testing in larger samples is needed to evaluate the validity of the scale, its sensitivity to change and to confirm its reliability

    A multidisciplinary approach to identify priority areas for the monitoring of a vulnerable family of fishes in Spanish Marine National Parks

    Background Syngnathid fishes (Actinopterygii, Syngnathidae) are flagship species strongly associated with seaweed and seagrass habitats. Seahorses and pipefishes are highly vulnerable to anthropogenic and environmental disturbances, but most species are currently Data Deficient according to the IUCN (2019), requiring more biological and ecological research. This study provides the first insights into syngnathid populations in the two marine Spanish National Parks (PNIA—Atlantic- and PNAC—Mediterranean). Fishes were collected periodically, marked, morphologically identified, analysed for size, weight, sex and sexual maturity, and sampled for stable isotope and genetic identification. Due the scarcity of previous information, habitat characteristics were also assessed in PNIA. Results Syngnathid diversity and abundance were low, with two species identified in PNIA (Hippocampus guttulatus and Syngnathus acus) and four in PNAC (S. abaster, S. acus, S. typhle and Nerophis maculatus). Syngnathids from both National Parks (NP) differed isotopically, with much lower δ15N in PNAC than in PNIA. The dominant species were S. abaster in PNAC and S. acus in PNIA. Syngnathids preferred less exposed sites in macroalgal assemblages in PNIA and Cymodocea meadows in PNAC. The occurrence of very large specimens, the absence of small-medium sizes and the isotopic comparison with a nearby population suggest that the population of Syngnathus acus (the dominant syngnathid in PNIA) mainly comprised breeders that migrate seasonally. Mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence variants were detected for H. guttulatus, S. acus, and S. abaster, and a novel 16S rDNA haplotype was obtained in N. maculatus. Our data suggest the presence of a cryptic divergent mitochondrial lineage of Syngnathus abaster species in PNAC. Conclusions This is the first multidisciplinary approach to the study of syngnathids in Spanish marine NPs. Habitat preferences and population characteristics in both NPs differed. Further studies are needed to assess the occurrence of a species complex for S. abaster, discarding potential misidentifications of genus Syngnathus in PNAC, and evaluate migratory events in PNIA. We propose several preferential sites in both NPs for future monitoring of syngnathid populations and some recommendations for their conservation.Postprin

    Prothymosin alpha: a ubiquitous polypeptide with potential use in cancer diagnosis and therapy

    The thymus is a central lymphoid organ with crucial role in generating T cells and maintaining homeostasis of the immune system. More than 30 peptides, initially referred to as “thymic hormones,” are produced by this gland. Although the majority of them have not been proven to be thymus-speciWc, thymic peptides comprise an eVective group of regulators, mediating important immune functions. Thymosin fraction Wve (TFV) was the Wrst thymic extract shown to stimulate lymphocyte proliferation and diVerentiation. Subsequent fractionation of TFV led to the isolation and characterization of a series of immunoactive peptides/polypeptides, members of the thymosin family. Extensive research on prothymosin (proT) and thymosin 1 (T1) showed that they are of clinical signiWcance and potential medical use. They may serve as molecular markers for cancer prognosis and/or as therapeutic agents for treating immunodeWciencies, autoimmune diseases and malignancies. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying their eVect are yet not fully elucidated proT and T1 could be considered as candidates for cancer immunotherapy. In this review, we will focus in principle on the eventual clinical utility of proT, both as a tumor biomarker and in triggering anticancer immune responses. Considering the experience acquired via the use of T1 to treat cancer patients, we will also discuss potential approaches for the future introduction of proT into the clinical setting

    En 2013, cuatro empresas de diferentes ámbitos de la economía del castaño, presentaron un proyecto al programa FEDER-INNTERCONECTA del CDTI. El objetivo era aunar sinergias para incrementar el conocimiento, y disponer de mejores materiales de castaño, para su utilización en diferentes ámbitos: extracción de metabolitos, producción de fruto y trasformación de la madera de calidad. TRAGSA desarrolló un sistema de micropropagación basado en el cultivo fotoautotrófico para la producción a gran escala de planta con calidad y bajo costo; BOIBEL FORESTAL se centró en plantaciones de alta densidad para la extracción de taninos, y optimizó este proceso estudiando sus efectos sobre el silo y la producción de leche. ALIBÓS se centró en el cultivo, analizando la competencia con la vegetación espontánea, necesidades hídricas, abonado y poda; y EXFOPINO seleccionó fenotipos por calidad de madera y desarrolló prototipos de elementos constructivos empleando madera de castaño: una loseta maciza, una fachada tras ventilada, un muro cortina y un portal de cierre. La interacción entre empresas además ha generado: una colección de clones de alta calidad de madera; 6 genes marcadores de resistencia a tinta; conocimiento sobre clones con mayor biomasa para obtención de extractos; sobre compatibilidad variedad-portainjerto; y sobre recría de la planta biotecnológicamente producida.Peer reviewe
