Do Analyst Earnings Beta Explain Growth Anomaly?

    Get PDF
Using a measure of cashflow risk derived from analyst forecasts, I find that cashflow risk offers a partial explanation for the value-growth anomaly. In particular, the lowest asset growth portfolio has a higher earnings beta than the highest asset growth portfolio. Approximately cashflow risk measured by earnings beta carries a significant positive risk premium of 1.24% with a t-value of 3.51

The production of higher alcohols from synthesis gas over Cu-Co-Cr-K catalysts has been studied. The production rate of alcohol was measured in the flow reactor, operating at 250 to 350°C, 3500 to 8000 gas hourly space velocity, and 900 to 1800 psig. The productivity as a function of temperature, pressure, gas hourly space velocity, carbon dioxide content of the feed, and reaction time was also examined. Physisorption data have been analyzed using the Langmuir model, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, the Barret-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) method, and the de Boer and Halsey t-method. The surface areas of catalysts CB1(1), CB1(3), and CB1(1) after reaction were 39.9 ¹ .9 m2/g, 28.9 ¹ 1.7 m2/g, and 26.5 ¹ 0.3 m2/g, respectively. Moreover, information such as pore size distribution, pore shape, monolayer volume, micropore volume and thickness of adsorption layer were also obtained. The atomic concentration and oxidation states of near surface species were established by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Throughput and fairness of multiple TCP connections in wireless networks

    Get PDF
TCP suffers from poor throughput performance in wireless networks. Furthermore, when multiple TCP connections compete at the base station, link errors and congestion lead to serious unfairness among the connections. Although the issue of TCP performance in wireless networks has attracted significant attention, most reports focus only on TCP throughput and assume that there is only a single connection in a congestion-free network. This paper studies the throughput and fairness of popular improvement mechanisms (the Snoop [8] and ELN [5]) and TCP variants with multiple TCP connections. Simulation results show that the improvement mechanisms under investigation are effective to improve TCP throughput in a wireless network. However, they cannot provide fairness among multiple TCP connections. From the studies presented, it is concluded that mechanisms to enhance TCP fairness are needed in wireless network

    Get PDF
Hanoi city was formed and inherited a unique urban heritage. Among them are the French-colonial Villas, which were constructed in the pre–1954 period. During the development process, the local government and community have always paid special attention to these heritage sites and organized many conservation and research activities. However, the management and preservation of these sites are still facing many challenges under pressure from urbanization, environmental impact, leading to the risk of being invaded and destroyed. The objective of this paper is to discuss the potential of developing the management strategy for French colonial villas in Hanoi within contemporary society using the concept of the Smart Cultural Heritage. The authors believe that will support various cultural services as well as promoting and preserving cultural heritage. It does so by presenting the results of the survey of the status of villas in the French period in Hanoi to classify and evaluate establish the regulation of use management and value conservation, build up the Big Data system. At the same time, the proposal will use smart platforms and participatory processes to encourage community access to raise awareness and assess the villas' value

Novel Treatment Strategies for Glioblastoma : Therapeutic Potential of Phenolic Derivatives and Orphan G-protein Coupled Receptor Ligand

    Get PDF
Glioblastoma (GBM) is a prevalent brain tumor with a high mortality rate worldwide. Although many efforts have been made to explore potential therapeutic strategies, the treatment for GBM remains obscure. Phenolic compounds have received considerable attention in cancer biology owing to their therapeutic applications. Indeed, phenolic compounds with alkylaminophenol core have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat several diseases. The present study aims at exploring the anti-tumor activity of three different alkylaminophenols, namely 2-((3,4-dihydroquinolin-1(2H)-yl)(p-tolyl)methyl)phenol (THTMP), 2- ((1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolin-1-yl)(4-methoxyphenyl)methyl)phenol (THMPP), and N-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrophenyl(4'-methylphenyl)methyl)indoline (HNPMI) against GBM cell growth and proliferation. Our results reveal that THTMP has potent inhibitory activity against GBM cells and could target GBM cancer stem cells (GSCs) via arresting the cell cycle at the G1/S phase and inducing reactive oxygen species- mediated apoptosis. Furthermore, THTMP could target GSCs by modulating epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and GSC signaling pathways. In addition, the G-protein coupled receptor 17 (GPR17) targeted signaling pathway has also grasped attention in the treatment of GBM. Our preliminary study has revealed that GPR17 interaction with its ligand, 2-[[5-(3-morpholin-4-ylsulfonylphenyl)-4-[4- (trifluoromethoxy) phenyl]-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl] sulfanyl]-N-(4-propan-2ylphenyl) acetamide (namely, T0510.3657 or T0), could potentially regulate the intracellular signaling communication of GBM. We have identified that T0 downregulates the concentration of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) through activating GPR17 signaling. Here, we have characterized the effect of T0 and the underlying molecular mechanism in inducing GBM cell death. Towards combinatorial drug development, the lead phenolic compound and the GPR17 ligand were used to investigate the anti-cancer effect against GBM. The results show that THTMP has a higher synergistic effect when combined with T0 than the temozolomide (TMZ) in inducing GBM cell death. Furthermore, this study reveals that combining THTMP with T0 would increase the inhibitory effect against mesenchymal GBM cells compared to a single THTMP/T0/TMZ treatment. In addition, the combination THTMP+T0 could decrease the migration, invasion, and colony formation ability of glioblastoma cells. The combination also has the ability to arrest the cell cycle at the S phase as well as to induce ROS-, caspase- and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-mediated apoptosis. The activation of intrinsic apoptosis is found to be regulated by XIAP, p53, cIAP-1, cIAP-2, HSP27, cytochrome c, cleaved caspases-3, and Bcl-2. The combinatorial drug treatment shows the promising anti-tumor property in the GBM xenograft model since it can reduce tumor volume. Our findings imply the coordinated administration of THTMP and T0 as a potential therapy that can be used for GBM treatment

Post-mortem Reproduction from a Vietnamese Perspective—an Analysis and Commentary

    Get PDF
Post-mortem reproduction is a complex and contested matter attracting attention from a diverse group of scholars and resulting in various responses from a range of countries. Vietnam has been reluctant to deal directly with this matter and has, accordingly, permitted post-mortem reproduction implicitly. First, by analysing Vietnam’s post-mortem reproduction cases, this paper reflects on the manner in which Vietnamese authorities have handled each case in the context of the contemporary legal framework, and it reveals the moral questions arising therefrom. The article then offers an account of Vietnamese social norms as an explanation for the tendency to conduct post-mortem reproduction. In arguing that a deeper and more thorough examination of the moral and ethical reasoning is required, the paper advocates in favour of supportive post-mortem reproduction regulation. In doing so, the paper seeks to reconcile the Vietnamese legal framework and post-mortem reproduction experiences of other countries. The article concludes that Vietnam and countries sharing the similar cultural traits should permit post-mortem reproduction explicitly. This would require full engagement with the ethical and legal issues arising, and careful promulgation of regulations and guidelines based on comparative experiences of a range of countries in handling this matter

EMI in Vietnam: What High School Teachers Think and Do

    Get PDF
The current case study was driven by a recent policy on using English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in the mainstream school system in Vietnam. It aimed to explore what science teachers believed and reported doing about EMI in teaching science subjects in the high school context. Nine EMI teachers of different science subjects at a specialized high school in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam participated in a semi-structured interview. Thematic analysis revealed the perceived positive impacts on teachers’ and students’ English proficiency, and negative influences on science content coverage. In practice, the teachers reported a focus on simple contents, explaining specialized terminologies and key concepts as the input. They mainly employed a lecture style and teacher initiation-student response interaction, switching between English and Vietnamese during their lessons. These results imply that EMI across the curriculum has the potential to improve English proficiency of students, but the EMI policy needs to consider its transparency in goals and communication to stakeholders especially teachers and school managers.  &nbsp
