Ecological modernisation of industrial estates in Viet Nam

    Get PDF
This research provides insights into environmental policy-making and management in Viet Nam, with special reference to industrial estates. It analyses the reasons behind the weaknesses of environmental policy-making and management in dealing with contemporary industrialisation and recommends a model for the greening of industrial estates. This contributes to the efforts to compromise economic and environmental goals in the pursuit of a national development strategy in transitional economy. The research contributes to the theory of Ecological Modernisation, which has been subject to many critiques, notably on its Eurocentric basis. The value and applicability of Ecological Modernisation Theory for developing or industrialising economies is therefore often questioned. This research shows the relevance of Ecological Modernisation Theory for the developing and industrialising economy of Viet Nam

THE IMPACTS OF IMPLEMENTING THE FLIPPED MODEL ON EFL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION

The flipped classroom is gaining more attention than ever before due to the pandemic of the COVID-19, by which online learning becomes a must in many countries and territories all over the world. The flipped model is a combination of online and face-to-face learning in which students watch instructional videos and do certain comprehension tasks at home prior to in-class lessons. To our knowledge, few studies have been conducted to explore the impact of flipped classrooms for teaching English reading skills in the high school context. The current experimental study has been conducted in a high school in the Mekong Delta with 52 students at Grade 11 in a high school in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Students were assigned to watch videos of instructions for 6 reading lessons in the English Grade 11 Textbook for 10 weeks. Learners’ reading comprehension performance and attitudes are compared between the control group and the experimental group. The findings reveal some interesting implications for Vietnamese teachers teaching English at high school. Article visualizations

Public transportation in Hanoi: applying an integrative model of behavioral intention.

    Get PDF
Hanoi is a populous capital with consistently growing transportation demands. This study applies an integrative model based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), service satisfaction, and environmental concern, in order to examine behavioral intention to use public transportation systems. Using 873 completed questionnaires collected from residents in Hanoi who have used public transport before. The study demonstrates that attitude, perceived behavioral control, personal norms, and descriptive norms influence behavioral intention. The impact of subjective norms lessens when descriptive norms and personal norms are included in this integrative model. Environmental concern indirectly affected behavioral intention through attitude, perceived behavioral control, and personal norms, thus strengthening the TPB model. This shows the appropriateness of this TPB-based integrative model, while service satisfaction is not an important motivation for changing from private vehicles to public bus systems. Theoretical and policy implications are discussed, along with suggestions for future research

THE EFFECTS OF TEACHER INTERACTIVE FEEDBACK ON EFL STUDENTS’ PARAGRAPH WRITING PERFORMANCE

    Get PDF
This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using teacher interactive feedback (TIF) on students' paragraph writing performance. Furthermore, it examines students' attitudes towards this strategy. The study took place in a lower secondary school and used both qualitative and quantitative data. Participants were 86 students who were randomly assigned to the experimental group (EG) and the control group (CG). While students in the EG learned to write the paragraph utilizing the TIF, students in the CG learned to write the paragraph using the traditional technique. Before the intervention, students in both groups took a pre-test to gauge their level of writing proficiency. The results were then compared to relevant data. The experiment spanned eight weeks during which a post-test was then administered to students in both groups to evaluate their development, particularly that of the EG. To obtain insights into TIF, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The findings from the study demonstrated a considerable improvement in paragraph writing skills through interactive feedback (IF) and paragraph writing instruction. Additionally, the majority of students showed their enthusiasm towards learning to write using TIF and expected to continue practicing this strategy in the future.  Article visualizations

Factors Affecting the Effectiveness of Transnational Education (TNE) Programmes – The Development of TNE in Vietnam within a Transnational UK Education Context

    Get PDF
Purpose: As there has been increasing demand for tertiary education globally over the past decade, TNE is proliferating and has become an essential aspect of higher education (HE). There has, however, been limited discussion in the literature about the effectiveness of TNE programmes, so it is difficult to know exactly what an effective TNE programme looks like, how to contribute to the success of TNE programmes and so on. Far too little attention has, moreover, been paid to the TNE programmes providing by the UK to Vietnam. This study aims, as a consequence, to narrow these research gaps and to contribute to the general theory of TNE programmes in HE by developing the concept of "the effectiveness ofTNE programmes", as well as exploring a model consisting of factors affecting the effectiveness of TNE programmes. Methodology: Two case studies for TNE programmes delivered by UK Universities with University B and University S in Vietnam were based on documentary review and semi-structured interviews. In each case study, two people in following groups of TNE stakeholders, including academic managers, administrators, teachers, students, parents, were invited to participate. Furthermore, two Vietnamese government representatives and two employers, who have knowledge and experiences in TNE programmes were invited to join the research. Findings: The idea of "the effectiveness of TNE programmes" was identified by exploring TNE key stakeholders' perspectives. Moreover, synthesising different aspects of research findings, a conceptual model assessing the impact of four factors including TNE curricula, students learning styles, student engagement, and cultural differences on the effectiveness of TNE programmes was created. Originality: The concept of TNE's key stakeholders and the model evaluating the effectiveness of TNE programmes could be seen as several main theoretical contributions to the literature on TNE programmes in HE. Furthermore, this thesis also has a practical contribution by providing several suggestions for designing suitable TNE programmes in Vietnam within a UK context. The findings have, therefore, important implications for policymaking, curriculum design and strategies for cooperation regarding TNE in general and UK TNE in Vietnam in particular

Translation, validation and psychometric properties of Effort-Reward Imbalance questionnaire among nurses in Vietnam

We translated the Effort-Reward imbalance questionnaire, an instrument for measuring work stress, into the Vietnamese language and investigated its psychometric properties among nurses in Vietnam. In a hospital-based cross-sectional study design, we sampled and interviewed 207 nurses working full-time (response rate 83%). We evaluated the internal consistency using standardized Cronbach's alpha coefficients and structural validity using confirmatory factor analysis. Discriminative validity was assessed by comparing the measured scores between age groups, gender, education levels, income groups, and job positions. In addition, we confirmed the criterion validity by investigating its association with self-reported health using simple and multiple logistic regression models. Most of the participants were female (73.3%), young (average 28.5 years old), and had education levels of college or higher (53.5%). We observed sufficient internal consistency in effort, reward, and over-commitment scales (Cronbach's alpha 0.80, 0.76, and 0.68, respectively). Confirmatory factor analysis of the three-factor hierarchical model showed an acceptable fit and fair construct validity with most moderate or stronger (>0.3) factor loading coefficients. Poor self-rated health was more likely in respondents in both Effort-Reward ratio's middle tertile (adjusted Odd-Ratio = 2.80, p-value = 0.031) and highest tertile (adjusted Odd-Ratio = 2.64, p-value = 0.05), adjusting for age, gender, and education levels. The Effort-reward imbalance scale has adequate reliability and validity for assessing work stress among nurses in Vietnam. Its significant association with poor self-rated health warrants further investigation. The validated instrument can help measure the effort-reward imbalance to manage better work-related emotional strains and mental health issues among nurses and ensure human resources' stability in healthcare in Vietnam. © 202
