Interannual variability of Mars South Polar cap
Telescopic data on the twentieth century regressions of Mars' south polar cap were reexamined for evidence of interannual variability. Several regressions, particularly that of 1956, are found to differ significantly from the mean. The possibility of correlations with major dust storms is explored

Duality methods utilizing a profit function framework are employed to estimate the output elasticity of ambient ozone levels on cash grain farms in Illinois. While duality methods have been recommended as a cure to many of the statistical problems of direct estimation of production functions, multicollinearity may still be a problem. A method for utilizing stochastic information on parameters of a seemingly unrelated system of equations, which is implied by profit function estimation, is developed and applied to measuring the impact of ozone. Interstellar Scattering Towards the Galactic Center as Probed by OH/IR Stars
Angular broadening measurements are reported of 20 OH/IR stars near the galactic center. This class of sources is known to have bright, intrinsically compact (less than or equal to 20 mas) maser components within their circumstellar shells. VLBA antennas and the VLA were used to perform a MKII spectral line VLBI experiment. The rapid drop in correlated flux with increasing baseline, especially for sources closest to the galactic center, is attributed to interstellar scattering. Angular diameters were measured for 13 of our sources. Lower limits were obtained for the remaining seven. With the data, together with additional data taken from the literature, the distribution was determined of interstellar scattering toward the galactic center. A region was found of pronounced scattering nearly centered on SgrA*. Two interpretations are considered for the enhanced scattering. One hypothesis is that the scattering is due to a clump of enhanced turbulence, such as those that lie along lines of sight to other known objects, that has no physical relationship to the galactic center. The other model considers the location of the enhanced scattering to arise in the galactic center itself. High Resolution Rapid Response observations of compact radio sources with the Ceduna Hobart Interferometer (CHI)
Context. Frequent, simultaneous observations across the electromagnetic
spectrum are essential to the study of a range of astrophysical phenomena
including Active Galactic Nuclei. A key tool of such studies is the ability to
observe an object when it flares i.e. exhibits a rapid and significant increase
in its flux density.
Aims. We describe the specific observational procedures and the calibration
techniques that have been developed and tested to create a single baseline
radio interferometer that can rapidly observe a flaring object. This is the
only facility that is dedicated to rapid high resolution radio observations of
an object south of -30 degrees declination. An immediate application is to
provide rapid contemporaneous radio coverage of AGN flaring at {\gamma}-ray
frequencies detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope.
Methods. A single baseline interferometer was formed with radio telescopes in
Hobart, Tasmania and Ceduna, South Australia. A software correlator was set up
at the University of Tasmania to correlate these data.
Results. Measurements of the flux densities of flaring objects can be made
using our observing strategy within half an hour of a triggering event. These
observations can be calibrated with amplitude errors better than 15%. Lower
limits to the brightness temperatures of the sources can also be calculated
