Complex permeability of soft magnetic ferrite polyester resin composites at frequencies above 1 MHz
Composite soft magnetic materials consist of magnetic particles in a non-magnetic matrix. The properties of such materials can be modelled using effective medium theory. Measurements have been made of the complex permeability of composites produced using ferrite powder and polyester resin. The success of various effective medium expressions in predicting the variation of complex permeability with composition has been assessed
Helicopter Anti-Torque System Using Strakes
A helicopter is disclosed with a system for controlling main-rotor torque which reduces the power and size requirements of conventional anti-torque means. The torque countering forces are generated by disrupting the main rotor downwash flowing around the fuselage. The downwash flow is separated from the fuselage surface by a strake positioned at a specified location on the fuselage. This location is determined by the particular helicopter wash pattern and fuselage configuration, generally being located between 20 deg before top dead center (TDC) and 80 deg from TDC on the fuselage side to which the main rotor blade approaches during rotation. The strake extends along the fuselage from the cabin section to the aft end and can be continuous or separated for aerodynamic surfaces such as a horizontal stabilizer
A quantitative state and transition model for the Mitchell grasslands of Central Western Queensland
Concerns of reduced productivity and land degradation in the Mitchell grasslands of central western Queensland were addressed through a range monitoring program to interpret condition and trend. Botanical and edaphic parameters were recorded along piosphere and grazing gradients, and across fenceline impact areas, to maximise changes resulting from grazing. The Degradation Gradient Method was used in conjunction with State and Transition Models to develop models of rangeland dynamics and condition. States were found to be ordered along a degradation gradient, indicator species developed according to rainfall trends and transitions determined from field data and available literature. Astrebla spp. abundance declined with declining range condition and increasing grazing pressure, while annual grasses and forbs increased in dominance under poor range condition. Soil erosion increased and litter decreased with decreasing range condition. An approach to quantitatively define states within a variable rainfall environment based upon a time-series ordination analysis is described.
The derived model could provide the interpretive framework necessary to integrate on-ground monitoring, remote sensing and geographic information systems to trace states and transitions at the paddock scale. However, further work is needed to determine the full catalogue of states and transitions and to refine the model for application at the paddock scale
An adaptive maneuvering logic computer program for the simulation of one-on-one air-to-air combat. Volume 1: General description
A technique for computer simulation of air combat is described. Volume 1 decribes the computer program and its development in general terms. Two versions of the program exist. Both incorporate a logic for selecting and executing air combat maneuvers with performance models of specific fighter aircraft. In the batch processing version the flight paths of two aircraft engaged in interactive aerial combat and controlled by the same logic are computed. The realtime version permits human pilots to fly air-to-air combat against the adaptive maneuvering logic (AML) in Langley Differential Maneuvering Simulator (DMS). Identifying state and transition models in the mitchell grasslands
The Mitchell grasslands are the most extensive and productive native pastures of semi -arid western Queensland. The grasslands are dominated by the long -lived perennial Astrebla spp. (Mitchell grasses). Rainfall is highly variable, leading to fluctuations in both pasture yield and composition, particularly of annual and ephemeral species growing between these perennial tussocks (Orr and Holmes 1984). These fluctuations create problems when attempting to assess rangeland condition and trend which is often based upon single, or short term, data. Furthermore, Everist and Webb (1975) concluded "the extrapolation from observations made at any one time can be misleading and inaccurate". This paper summarises an approach by which State and Transition theory (Westoby et al. 1989) and the Degradation Gradient Method (Bosch and Kellner 1991) were used to develop models of vegetation change which were able to account for this inherent variability
Complexity-based learning and teaching: a case study in higher education
This paper presents a learning and teaching strategy based on complexity science and explores its impacts on a higher education game design course. The strategy aimed at generating conditions fostering individual and collective learning in educational complex adaptive systems, and led the design of the course through an iterative and adaptive process informed by evidence emerging from course dynamics. The data collected indicate that collaboration was initially challenging for students, but collective learning emerged as the course developed, positively affecting individual and team performance. Even though challenged, students felt highly motivated and enjoyed working on course activities. Their perception of progress and expertise were always high, and the academic performance was on average very good. The strategy fostered collaboration and allowed students and tutors to deal with complex situations requiring adaptation
Walks of molecular motors in two and three dimensions
Molecular motors interacting with cytoskeletal filaments undergo peculiar
random walks consisting of alternating sequences of directed movements along
the filaments and diffusive motion in the surrounding solution. An ensemble of
motors is studied which interacts with a single filament in two and three
dimensions. The time evolution of the probability distribution for the bound
and unbound motors is determined analytically. The diffusion of the motors is
strongly enhanced parallel to the filament. The analytical expressions are in

Collisional kinetics of non-uniform electric field, low-pressure, direct-current discharges in H
A model of the collisional kinetics of energetic hydrogen atoms, molecules,
and ions in pure H discharges is used to predict H emission
profiles and spatial distributions of emission from the cathode regions of
low-pressure, weakly-ionized discharges for comparison with a wide variety of
experiments. Positive and negative ion energy distributions are also predicted.
The model developed for spatially uniform electric fields and current densities
less than A/m is extended to non-uniform electric fields, current
densities of A/m, and electric field to gas density ratios MTd at 0.002 to 5 Torr pressure. (1 Td = V m and 1 Torr =
133 Pa) The observed far-wing Doppler broadening and spatial distribution of
the H emission is consistent with reactions among H, H,
H, and H ions, fast H atoms, and fast H molecules, and with
reflection, excitation, and attachment to fast H atoms at surfaces. The
H excitation and H formation occur principally by collisions of
fast H, fast H, and H with H. Simplifications include using a
one-dimensional geometry, a multi-beam transport model, and the average
cathode-fall electric field. The H emission is linear with current
density over eight orders of magnitude. The calculated ion energy distributions
agree satisfactorily with experiment for H and H, but are only in
qualitative agreement for H and H. The experiments successfully modeled
range from short-gap, parallel-plane glow discharges to beam-like,
