ẢNH HƯỞNG CỦA MÔI TRƯỜNG NUÔI CẤY LÊN SINH TRƯỞNG CỦA CALLUS CÂY GIẢO CỔ LAM (Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino) – MỘT CÂY DƯỢC LIỆU CÓ GIÁ TRỊ
Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Thunb.) Makino (Jiaogulan) is a traditional medicinal herb belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. G. pentaphyllum grows widely in Southern China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. The essential bioactive components of Jiaogulan are saponin glycosides (gypenosides) and antioxidants. Jiaogulan exhibits bioactive activities such as anticancer, antioxidant, cholesterol-reducing agent, immunopotentiation, and others. In this study, the primary callus of Jiaogulan was used as a material to evaluate the influence of the culture medium on the induction and growth of secondary calli. The results reveal that the callus cultured on the MS medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/L kinetin and 0.5 mg/L indole-3-butyric acid has the best growth ability, high rate of secondary callus induction (100%), and good callus quality for suspension culture. The concentration of gypenoside and Rb1 in callus is 36.298 and 0.009 mg/g dry weight. The gypenoside concentration of callus is lower than that of leaves (65.58%) and almost similar to that of stems (92.38%) from natural samples. The suitable solvent for the extraction of gypenoside is methanol. The obtained callus will be used as material for cell suspension culture in further studies.
‘When I tried to explain, they shouted back at me!’: exploring how community pharmacists navigate tensions implementing antimicrobial stewardship in Vietnam
Antimicrobial resistance is a major global and national health challenge, accelerated by ‘irrational’ antibiotic use. In response, Vietnam has been implementing a public health plan of antimicrobial stewardship since 2013 to reduce antibiotic sales in community pharmacies, although it has had limited effect. Given that private pharmacies are increasingly the entry point to access healthcare, reflective of the inhibited accessibility of primary healthcare, understanding how the positioning of community pharmacists shapes the delivery of antimicrobial stewardship plans warrant further investigation. This qualitative analysis draws on data from 24 in-depth interviews with licensed community pharmacists in Vietnam. Interviewees described being constrained in rationing the sale of antibiotics by tensions within their professional role, in which the delivery of antimicrobial stewardship within their public health commitments rubs up against commercial and social obligations to their livelihoods and communities respectively. The concept of ‘resistance’ provides insight into what obstructs the integration of national antimicrobial stewardship guidance and policy, hindering the transformation of local practices concerning antibiotic sales at the community level. Findings reveal opportunities to recast community pharmacists as ‘productive anchors’ who can facilitate the appropriate use of antibiotics and strengthen links to primary care within the local context. Structural changes are needed, however, so that people do not use antibiotics as a proxy for health care. Improving the accessibility of primary healthcare would also curtail the reliance on community pharmacists’ to dispense antibiotics as a local mechanism of financial protection and social care within community
Development of Spray Pyrolysis System for Deposition of Nano-structure Materials
In this paper, we report the development of the spray pyrolysis technique for preparing different nano-structure materials toward the application in thin film solar cells. The spray pyrolysis system can heat up the substrate to 6000C with less than 0.01% full scale. The ramping rate can be set to 100C per minute. The effective coating area can be up to 100 x 100 mm2. Using this technique, the thickness and roughness of the films can be controlled. The obtained morphology, the microstructure of the thin-films, given by scanning electron microscope, X ray diffraction…showed that the system is suitable for deposition of different layers of the dye sensitized solar cell
Echinacea purpurea: An overview of mechanism, efficacy, and safety in pediatric upper respiratory infections and otitis media
Pediatric upper respiratory infections (URIs) and otitis media (OM) significantly impact the health of children globally. Echinacea purpurea, known for its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, has been historically used to treat various ailments, suggesting its potential as an adjunctive treatment in pediatric respiratory conditions. This narrative review synthesizes literature from January 2000 to December 2023 on the efficacy and safety of E. purpurea in treating pediatric URIs, including OM. It focuses on clinical trials and empirical studies that explore the mechanisms of action, such as the modulation of cytokine production, inhibition of NF-κB signaling, and antimicrobial effects. The analysis reveals mixed outcomes regarding the efficacy of E. purpurea in pediatric populations, attributed partly to variability in study designs and lack of standardized treatment protocols. While some studies report reduced severity and duration of respiratory symptoms, others indicate minimal or no significant difference compared to placebo. The review also highlights the need for specifically designed products that cater to the unique physiological and metabolic needs of children. Rigorous, well-designed clinical trials are crucial for establishing clear guidelines on the use of E. purpurea in pediatric respiratory care, ensuring its safe and effective application in improving health outcomes for children
The 2017 Dengue virus 1 outbreak in northern Vietnam was caused by a locally circulating virus group
Background: Dengue virus (DENV) is a member of insect vector-borne viruses, and it causes dengue fever. Southeast Asia is the epi-center of dengue fever in the world. The characterization of the virus is essential to identify the transmission and evolution of DENV.Objectives: In 2017, there was an outbreak of Dengue virus type 1 (DENV1) in northern Vietnam and the neighboring countries. To identify the genetic character of the outbreak virus in the area, we conducted whole-genome sequencing analysis on the samples positive for the DENV1 along with real-time PCR.Study design: In total, 1026 blood samples were collected from patients with suspected dengue fever in Ha Nam and Hai Duong province, nearby areas of the capital of Vietnam. After screening by real-time PCR, 40 of DENV1 positive samples were subjected to whole-genome sequencing, and 28 complete coding sequences were obtained. Results: All 28 sequences were genotype I of DENV1, which is dominant in the southeast and East Asian countries. The phylogenetic analysis of the E region showed that they fell into a single cluster with the reported sequences from Vietnam between 2009 and 2016, in which the isolates from other countries are very rare. Our results suggested that the 2017 outbreak in the area was caused by locally circulating viruses
Isolation of dengue serotype 3 virus from the cerebrospinal fluid of an encephalitis patient in Hai Phong, Vietnam in 2013
Dengue encephalitis (DE) is characterized as unusual presentation of dengue infection. Despite the reports that DE accounts for only 1-5% of dengue cases, this disease tends to be increasingly reported to threaten global human health throughout dengue endemic areas particularly in Southeast Asia. The molecular information of clinically characterized, neurotropic dengue virus (DENV) in human beings is extremely scarce despite it playing an important role in deciphering the pathogenesis of dengue-related neurological cases. Here we report a case of DE caused by DENV3 genotype III in a male patient with atypical symptoms of DENV infection in Hai Phong, Vietnam in 2013. The virus isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of this case-patient was closely related to DENV3 genotype III strains isolated from serum of two other patients, who manifested classical dengue in the same year and residing in the same area as the case-patient. It is noteworthy to mention that in 2013, DENV3 genotype III was detected for the first time in Vietnam
