Leaf Processing in a Slough of an Ozark Stream
Processing of sugar maple (Acer saccharum), black oak (Quercus velutina), and American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) was investigated in a slough of the Illinois River, Benton County, Arkansas, using 5-gram packs in wire baskets. Oak and sycamore showed similar degradation rates, while maple was processed much faster. All processing rates were strongly retarded during a period of siltation. Chironomid larvae were the dominant organisms associated with the packs and their numbers were depressed by the silt influx. Shredders were notably few in number as compared with studies from the northwestern United States

The quality of political information
The article conceptualizes the quality of political information and shows how the concept can be used for empirical research. I distinguish three aspects of quality (intelligibility, relevance, validity) and use them to judge the constituent foundations of political information, that is component claims (statements of alleged facts) and connection claims (argumentative statements created by causally linking two component claims). The resulting conceptual map thus entails six manifestations of information quality (component claimintelligibility, connection claim intelligibility, component claimrelevance, connection claim relevance, component claim validity, and connection claim validity). I explain how the conceptual map can be used to make sense of the eclectic variety of existing research, and how it can advance new empirical research, as a guide for determining variation in information quality, as a conceptual template for the analysis of different types of political messages and their common quality deficiencies, and as a generator of new research questions and theoretical expectations
Influence of Culture and Management Systems on PMS
Purpose: The aim of this study is to find and explore the relationships between organizational culture, management Systems and the implementation and Operationalisation aspects of Performance Measurement Systems (PMS). Design/methodology/approach: The relevant literature on organizational culture, Organizational behavior, Strategic management and management accounting, in the context of performance measurement systems, will be examined. A structured questionnaire will be used to survey the views of the top management teams of a suitable sample of organizations. The survey implementation process will follow four steps: pre-‐notification, initial mailing, first follow up and, second follow up. Findings: As this is a developmental paper, it is not possible to provide definite findings at this point. However, it is anticipated to find out relationship between Culture, Management systems and PMS. Practical implications: The findings of this study will provide managers with better understanding of the relationship between organizational culture, management systems and PMS. This will in turn help them to provide a successful PMS. Originality/value: No research has been done to find out the relationship between organizational culture, management systems and two aspects of PMS, namely implementation and operationalisation aspects, using a large-‐scale sample approach. The findings of this research therefore will provide useful insights and methods for future researchers in this area
An Analysis of Traffic Accidents on County Roads
The purpose of this research was to investigate the causes of and determine possible remedies for the rising number of county road accidents in Indiana. County road accidents were defined for the purpose of this study as all traffic accidents occurring on roads which are administered by the County Commissioners in Indiana except accidents occurring at intersections of county roads with state highways. These latter accidents are normally charged to state highways. The information used in this research was obtained from accident records. The best available source of this type of information, the accident reports which are filed at the Indiana State Police Headquarters in Indianapolis, was utilized
Enhanced Eddy Activity in the Beaufort Gyre in Response to Sea Ice Loss
The Beaufort Gyre freshwater content has increased since the 1990s, potentially stabilizing in recent years. The mechanisms proposed to explain the stabilization involve either mesoscale eddy activity that opposes Ekman pumping or the reduction of Ekman pumping due to reduced sea ice?ocean surface stress. However, the relative importance of these mechanisms is unclear. Here, we present observational estimates of the Beaufort Gyre mechanical energy budget and show that energy dissipation and freshwater content stabilization by eddies increased in the late-2000s. The loss of sea ice and acceleration of ocean currents after 2007 resulted in enhanced mechanical energy input but without corresponding increases in potential energy storage. To balance the energy surplus, eddy dissipation and its role in gyre stabilization must have increased after 2007. Our results imply that declining Arctic sea ice will lead to an increasingly energetic Beaufort Gyre with eddies playing a greater role in its stabilization
