Representing the Plantation Mistress in Antebellum American Literature

Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the portrayal of the plantation mistress in southern women's diaries, slave narratives and abolitionist documents. More specifically, this thesis focused on exploring how nineteenth-century literary conventions and societal expectation affect the portrayal of the plantation mistress in antebellum American literature. The works of Child, Jacobs, Douglass, Stowe, Griffith and Mary Chesnut provide us with a comprehensive portrayal of the plantation mistress as seen from the perspectives of northern and southern women and former slaves. While abolitionist writers and former slaves focus more on the corrupting effect of slavery on the mistress which resulted in her violence and rage, southern women writers provide a justification for the conflicting nature of the mistress as she struggled to maintain her lady-like image while facing the reality of her life.English Departmen

This review considers the methodological reasons for the wide range of results for the red blood cells Mg2+-dependent Na+/K+-ATPase activity described by different authors. We assert that the differences in the Na+/K+-ATPase activity obtained by the researchers are due to the methodological peculiarities associated with methods of obtaining and measurement of the enzyme activity, such as red blood cells separation and storage (centrifugation, concentration and composition of the lysing solution, time and temperature of hemolysis and freezing), as well as the peculiarities of methods for the quantitative determination of protein and inorganic phosphorus. On the basis of the literature data analysis we recommend that for the most accurate determination of the Na+/K+-ATPase activity it is better to use the chelator in the lysing buffer solution and Fiske-Subbarow and Lowry methods for the determination of inorganic phosphorus and quantitative protein content, respectively

Childhood obesity is a problem that requires a complex approach to treatment. The aim of the research is to propose a complex rehabilitation program designed to reduce body weight and mitigate the effects of obesity.Materials and methods: The article presents a clinical case of a 10-year-old boy with obesity. His parents reported several concerns, including a significantly increased appetite, impaired physical activity, frequent illnesses, insomnia, and a lack of concentration. The child underwent a thorough examination by specialists at the Medical Center of the University of Varna, including a doctor of physical and rehabilitation medicine and a physiotherapist. Subsequently, a comprehensive rehabilitation program was developed for the patient, consisting of phytotherapy, climate treatment, and an individualized physiotherapy program. The patient diligently followed the program for 45 days, performing the prescribed physiotherapy exercises daily. Additionally, with the child's consent, he participated in sports activities twice a week with an intense workload. Regular physical assessments were conducted every 15 days to monitor progress and adapt the program, while changes in the child's psycho-emotional state after the physiotherapeutic activities were also closely observed. Results: The research proved that after the complex therapy, a reduction in body weight, fat percentage, and body measurements was achieved. The duration and efficiency of his sleep also improved, as did his concentration in the performance of every-day activities. Conclusion: This study highlights the positive impact of selecting appropriate physiotherapeutic methods and incorporating sports, climate therapy, and phytotherapy in the treatment of childhood obesity. The findings indicate the beneficial effects in terms of addressing functional deficits and enhancing overall quality of life

BACKGROUND: Even though the incidence of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in children (MIS-C) is decreasing cases are still reported across the world. Studying the consequences of MIS-C enhances our understanding of the disease's prognosis. The objective of this study was to assess short- and medium-term clinical outcomes of MIS-C.METHODS: Prospective observational cohort study at Municipal Children's Hospital Morozovskaya, Moscow, Russia. All children meeting the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), or the World Health Organization (WHO) MIS-C case definition admitted to the hospital between 17 May and 26 October 2020 were included in the study. All survivors were invited to attend a clinic at 2 and 6 weeks after hospital discharge.RESULTS: 37 children median age 6 years (interquartile range [IQR] 3.3-9.4), 59.5% (22/37) boys were included in the study. 48.6% (18/37) of patients required ICU care. One child died. All children had increased levels of systemic inflammatory markers during the acute event. Echocardiographic investigations identified abnormal findings in 35.1% (13/37) of children. 5.6% (2/36) of children were presenting with any symptoms six weeks after discharge. By six weeks the inflammatory markers were within the reference norms in all children. The echocardiographic evaluation showed persistent coronary dilatation in one child.CONCLUSIONS: Despite the severity of their acute MIS-C, the majority of children in our cohort fully recovered with none having elevated laboratory markers of inflammation at 6 weeks, few (< 10%) reporting persistent symptoms at 6 weeks, and only one with persistent echocardiographic abnormalities.</p

Zinc is commonly used in industry. However, sometimes it can be challenging to remove zinc ions from wastewaters. JSC Smurfit Kappa faced a problem of having not efficient enough technologies to reduce the amount of released zinc. This study aims to take a look at the available methods of heavy metal removal. Based on the option, which were found during the literature review, this study asks: Which two methods would be the most applicable to the chosen case and beneficial for the company? In this case beneficial concerns not only financial side, but also environmental aspects. To achieve the set goal, multi-criteria analysis table was chosen for a decision-making process. Five criteria were chosen as the most important ones and every option, included in the scope of work, was evaluated by those criteria. With this method it was found that the most applicable option would be the use of zeolite. After the further research it was recommended to use two-dimensional natural zeolite, clinoptiolite, for the most efficient zinc remediation

3D asset creation is a complex process that includes multiple steps, which may not be efficient for assets that require less detail such as environmental props in 3D games. This thesis investigates the use of height map modeling as a more efficient alternative to conventional 3D modeling for creating visually appealing hard-surface assets. While height map modeling is not a new concept, there has been no research on its visual appeal to users or how it compares to conventional 3D modeling. The aim of this study was to compare two sets of models created with different workflows using an AB test with randomly selected participants. Results were analyzed with proportions z-test and chi-square test, showing no significant difference in visual appeal between the assets. The study demonstrates the potential of height map modeling as an alternative to conventional 3D modeling, providing more creative opportunities for artists when combined with emerging powerful tools
