    Non-Abelian coset string backgrounds from asymptotic and initial data

    We describe hierarchies of exact string backgrounds obtained as non-Abelian cosets of orthogonal groups and having a space--time realization in terms of gauged WZW models. For each member in these hierarchies, the target-space backgrounds are generated by the ``boundary'' backgrounds of the next member. We explicitly demonstrate that this property holds to all orders in α′\alpha'. It is a consequence of the existence of an integrable marginal operator build on, generically, non-Abelian parafermion bilinears. These are dressed with the dilaton supported by the extra radial dimension, whose asymptotic value defines the boundary. Depending on the hierarchy, this boundary can be time-like or space-like with, in the latter case, potential cosmological applications.Comment: 26 page

    The effect of type of mechanical processing on electrical conductivity and piezoresistive response of CNT and graphite composites

    Nanocomposite materials are attracting significant interest as matrices for conventional composite materials, where their increased electrical conductivity present the possibility of multi-functional properties, such as embedded heating and electromagnetic shielding. One problem facing the increased use of the nanocomposites is their rapid and efficient production. Three different mixing methods: 3-roll mill, shear mixing and hand mixing were tested to mix carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphite into epoxy resin. The electrical conductivity and piezoresistive response of the resulting nanocomposites were measured and compared to the relative rate of nanocomposite could be produced. Maximisation of the functional properties is important, but speed of throughput is also essential, thus enabling larger and production ready components to take advantage of the additional functionality. Because of health and safety concerns during material handling of nanoparticles, this study employed a premixed CNT masterbatch (Arkema) and graphite powders (Superior Graphite), as these do not require specialised health and safety equipment to process, making industrial application more viable. It was found that the 3-roll provided the largest increase in conductivity out of the three mixing methods, and hand mixing and shear mixing performed similarly. Piezoresistivity was seen in all modified samples, however gauge factors were difficult to determine due to underdeveloped sample contact and preparation methods

    Multi-element fiber technology for space-division multiplexing applications

    A novel technological approach to space division multiplexing (SDM) based on the use of multiple individual fibers embedded in a common polymer coating material is presented, which is referred to as Multi-Element Fiber (MEF). The approach ensures ultralow crosstalk between spatial channels and allows for cost-effective ways of realizing multi-spatial channel amplification and signal multiplexing/demultiplexing. Both the fabrication and characterization of a passive 3-element MEF for data transmission, and an active 5-element erbium/ytterbium doped MEF for cladding-pumped optical amplification that uses one of the elements as an integrated pump delivery fiber is reported. Finally, both components were combined to emulate an optical fiber network comprising SDM transmission lines and amplifiers, and illustrate the compatibility of the approach with existing installed single-mode WDM fiber systems

    We present some preliminary investigations about the AdS2*S2 D3-branes in AdS3*S3. We analyse the quadratic fluctuations of Dirac-Born-Infeld action around a given semi-classical D-brane configuration and compare them with results obtained by using conformal field theory techniques.     The BEC of charged pions is investigated in the framework of O(4) linear sigma model. By using Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism, we have derived the gap equations for the effective masses of the mesons at finite temperature and finite isospin density. The BEC is discussed in chiral limit and non-chiral limit at Hartree approximation and also at large N approximation.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

    NS5-branes on an ellipsis and novel marginal deformations with parafermions

    We consider NS5-branes distributed along the circumference of an ellipsis and explicitly construct the corresponding gravitational background. This provides a continuous line of deformations between the limiting cases, considered before, in which the ellipsis degenerates into a circle or into a bar. We show that a slight deformation of the background corresponding to a circle distribution into an ellipsoidal one is described by a novel non-factorizable marginal perturbation of bilinears of dressed parafermions. The latter are naturally defined for the circle case since, as it was shown in the past, the background corresponds to an orbifold of the exact conformal field theory coset model SU(2)/U(1) times SL(2,R)/U(1). We explore the possibility to define parafermionic objects at generic points of the ellipsoidal families of backgrounds away from the circle point. We also discuss a new limiting case in which the ellipsis degenerates into two infinitely stretched parallel bars and show that the background is related to the Eguchi-Hanson metric, via T-duality.Comment: 24 page

    Protein modification and maintenance systems as biomarkers of ageing

    Changes in the abundance and post-translational modification of proteins and accumulation of some covalently modified proteins have been proposed to represent hallmarks of biological ageing. Within the frame of the Mark-Age project, the workpackage dedicated to "markers based on proteins and their modifications" has been firstly focused on enzymatic and non-enzymatic post-translational modifications of serum proteins by carbohydrates. The second focus of the workpackage has been directed towards protein maintenance systems that are involved either in protein quality control (ApoJ/Clusterin) or in the removal of oxidatively damaged proteins through degradation and repair (proteasome and methionine sulfoxide reductase systems). This review describes the most relevant features of these protein modifications and maintenance systems, their fate during ageing and/or their implication in ageing and longevity

The classification pattern is based on the algebra homomorphisms relating the Bianchi group and the duality group SO(3).
