Loading of bosons in optical lattices into the p band
We present a method for transferring bosonic atoms residing on the lowest
s-band of an optical lattice to the first excited p-bands. Our idea hinges on
resonant tunneling between adjacent sites of accelerated lattices. The
acceleration effectively shifts the quasi-bound energies on each site such that
the system can be cast into a Wannier-Stark ladder problem. By adjusting the
acceleration constant, a situation of resonant tunneling between the s- and
p-bands is achievable. Within a mean-field model, considering 87Rb atoms, we
demonstrate population transfer from the s- to the p-bands with around 95 %
efficiency. Nonlinear effects deriving from atom-atom interactions, as well as
coupling of the quasi bound Wannier-Stark states to the continuum, are

Mini-Collagens in Hydra Nematocytes
We have isolated and characterized four collagen-related c-DNA clones (N-COL 1, N-COL 2, N-COL 3, N-COL 4) that are highly expressed in developing nematocytes in hydra. All four c-DNAs as well as their corresponding transcripts are small in size (600-1,000 bp). The deduced amino acid sequences show that they contain a central region consisting of 14 to 16 Gly-X-Y triplets. This region is flanked amino-terminal by a stretch of 14-23 proline residues and carboxy-terminal by a stretch of 6-9 prolines. At the NH2- and COOH-termini are repeated patterns of cysteine residues that are highly conserved between the molecules. A model is proposed which consists of a central stable collagen triple helix of 12-14 nm length from which three 9-22 nm long polyproline II type helices emerge at both ends. Disulfide linkage between cysteine- rich segments in these helices could lead to the formation of oligomeric network structures. Electrophoretic characterization of nematocyst extracts allows resolution of small proline-rich polypeptides that correspond in size to the cloned sequences
Three conceptions of a theory of institutions
We compare Guala's unified theory of institutions with that of Searle and Greif. We show that unification can be many things and it may be associated with diverse explanatory goals. We also highlight some of the important shortcomings of Guala's account: it does not capture all social institutions, its ability to bridge social ontology and game theory is based on a problematic interpretation of the type-token distinction, and its ability to make social ontology useful for social sciences is hindered by Guala's interpretation of social institution types as social kinds akin to natural kinds.Peer reviewe
Composition of Ni2+ cation solvation shell in NiCl2–methanol solution by multinuclear NMR
1H-, 2H- and 13C-NMR spectra have been used to test the Ni2+ solvation shell composition in the 1.1 molal methanol solution of NiCl2. It has been confirmed that Cl− anion takes part in the nearest environment of Ni2+ cation at all the temperatures investigated. Using 2H-NMR allowed us to detect for the first time OD-signal of methanol in the primary solvation shell of Ni2+ cation. Both 2H- and 13C-NMR spectra show that the composition of the cation solvation shell becomes more complicated at temperatures lower than 220 K
Directed transport and localization in phase-modulated driven lattices
We explore the dynamics of non-interacting particles loaded into a
phase-modulated one-dimensional lattice formed by laterally oscillating square
barriers. Tuning the parameters of the driven unit cell of the lattice selected
parts of the classical phase space can be manipulated in a controllable manner.
We find superdiffusion in position space for all parameters regimes. A directed
current of an ensemble of particles can be created through locally breaking the
spatiotemporal symmetries of the time-driven potential. Magnitude and direction
of the current are tunable. Several mechanisms for transient localization and
trapping of particles in different wells of the driven unit cell are presented
and analyzed
Dynamical trapping and chaotic scattering of the harmonically driven barrier
A detailed analysis of the classical nonlinear dynamics of a single driven
square potential barrier with harmonically oscillating position is performed.
The system exhibits dynamical trapping which is associated with the existence
of a stable island in phase space. Due to the unstable periodic orbits of the
KAM-structure, the driven barrier is a chaotic scatterer and shows stickiness
of scattering trajectories in the vicinity of the stable island. The
transmission function of a suitably prepared ensemble yields results which are
very similar to tunneling resonances in the quantum mechanical regime. However,
the origin of these resonances is different in the classical regime.Comment: 14 page

We argue that the appraisal of models in social epistemology requires conceiving of them as argumentative devices, taking into account the argumentative context and adopting a family-of-models perspective. We draw up such an account and show how it makes it easier to see the value and limits of the use of models in social epistemology. To illustrate our points, we document and explicate the argumentative role of epistemic landscape models in social epistemology and highlight their limitations. We also claim that our account could be fruitfully used in appraising other models in philosophy and science
