NLO Quarkonium Production in Hadronic Collisions
We present some preliminary results on the next-to-leading order calculation
in QCD of quarkonium production cross sections in hadronic collisions. We will
show that the NLO total cross sections for -wave states produced at high
energy are not reliable, due to the appearance of very large and negative
contributions. We also discuss some issues related to the structure of final
states in colour-octet production and to high-p_T fragmentation.Comment: 11 pages, Latex, epsfig, 4 figures. To appear in the proceedings of

Astrocytes and Microglia and Their Potential Link with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
The cellular mechanism(s) underlying autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are not fully understood although it has been shown that various genetic and environmental factors contribute to their etiology. As increasing evidence indicates that astrocytes and microglial cells play a major role in synapse maturation and function, and there is evidence of deficits in glial cell functions in ASDs, one current hypothesis is that glial dysfunctions directly contribute to their pathophysiology. The aim of this review is to summarize microglia and astrocyte functions in synapse development and their contributions to ASDs
Identification of onosma visianii roots extract and purified shikonin derivatives as potential acaricidal agents against tetranychus urticae
There is an increasing need for the discovery of reliable and eco-friendly pesticides and natural plant-derived products may play a crucial role as source of new active compounds. In this research, a lipophilic extract of Onosma visianii roots extract containing 12% of shikonin derivatives demonstrated significant toxicity and inhibition of oviposition against Tetranychus urticae mites. Extensive chromatographic separation allowed the isolation of 11 naphthoquinone derivatives that were identified by spectral techniques and were tested against Tetranychus urticae. All the isolated compounds presented effects against the considered mite and isobutylshikonin (1) and isovalerylshikonin (2) were the most active, being valuable model compounds for the study of new anti-mite agents
High prevalence of clonally diverse spa type t026 staphylococcus aureus contaminating rural eggshells
Purpose. The presence of Staphylococcus aureus in poultry and poultry products, including eggs, increases its potential to enter the food chain, resulting in foodborne diseases. In this context, eggshell colonization by staphylococci may represent a risk factor. This study aimed to investigate the contamination of rural eggshell by S. aureus and to characterize the key features of the isolated strains. Methodology. Antibiotic resistance was assessed by disc diffusion. Resistant isolates were analysed by PCR for the identification of associated genetic determinants of resistance. PCR was also used to screen for the presence of genes coding for toxins, namely, sea, sec, sei, sem, seo and tst. The genetic characterization was extended by means of agr locus typing and spa typing. Results. 34 S. aureus were isolated. Macrolide-and tetracycline-resistant strains were prevalent. All strains were susceptible to oxacillin, cefoxitin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. PCR screening for genes encoding enterotoxins detected several virulence patterns, which, together with spa-typing and agr-locus typing, allowed cluster analysis and the description of novel clones. Conclusion. Continuous monitoring of staphylococci is needed also in rural or natural settings. Increasing the number of samples and expanding the geographical region will be needed to further extend the significance of the study
Level of understanding of medical terms among italian students
Problems related to medical treatment and health literacy are nowadays a
considerable difficulty, particularly if awareness of them is low. There is still
a lack of information about students understanding of medical recommendations.
The aim of this work was to determine the understanding of medical terms among
Italian students and to find out if there is any relation between understanding
and age, gender, education or parental occupation. The research was realized via
questionnaires in the Marche region of Central Italy in 2015. Students were
chosen at random from grammar schools, vocational schools and the local
university. 387 completed questionnaires were subsequently evaluated. The level
of understanding of medical terms among students was quite poor. Most of the
terms included in the study were known to only a third of respondents on average.
A significant link between the comprehension of medical terms and education level
or parental occupation was observed, especially in the terms that are not
commonly used. Nevertheless, no relation between knowledge of medical terms and
gender was found. This topic, which requires attention, should be investigated
because of correct implementation of preventive medicine programs.Key words:

Numerical simulation of 3D free surface flows in time dependent curvilinear coordinates
We propose a three dimensional non-hydrostatic shock-capturing numerical model for the simulation of wave propagation, transformation and breaking, which is based on an original integral formulation of the contravariant Navier-Stokes equations, devoid of Christoffel symbols, in general time-dependent curvilinear coordinates
Balancing adaptivity and customisation : in search of sustainable personalisation in cultural heritage
Personalisation for cultural heritage aims at delivering to visitors the right stories at the right time. Our endeavour to determine which features to use for adaptation starts from acknowledging what forms of personalisation curators value as most meaningful. Working in collaboration with curators we have explored the different features that must be taken into account: some are related to the content (multiple interpretation layers), others to the context of delivery (where and when), but some are idiosyncratic (“match my mood”, “something that is relevant to my life”). The findings reveal that a sustainable personalization needs to accurately balance: (i) support to curators in customising stories to different visitors; (ii) algorithms for the system to dynamically model aspects of the visit and instantiate the correct behaviour; and (iii) an active role for visitors to choose the type of experience they would like to have today
Colloidal CuFeS2 Nanocrystals: Intermediate Fe d-Band Leads to High Photothermal Conversion Efficiency
We describe the colloidal hot-injection synthesis of phase-pure nanocrystals
(NCs) of a highly abundant mineral, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). Absorption bands
centered at around 480 and 950 nm, spanning almost the entire visible and near
infrared regions, encompass their optical extinction characteristics. These
peaks are ascribable to electronic transitions from the valence band (VB) to
the empty intermediate band (IB), located in the fundamental gap and mainly
composed of Fe 3d orbitals. Laser-irradiation (at 808 nm) of an aqueous
suspension of CuFeS2 NCs exhibited significant heating, with a photothermal
conversion efficiency of 49%. Such efficient heating is ascribable to the
carrier relaxation within the broad IB band (owing to the indirect VB-IB gap),
as corroborated by transient absorption measurements. The intense absorption
and high photothermal transduction efficiency (PTE) of these NCs in the
so-called biological window (650-900 nm) makes them suitable for photothermal
therapy as demonstrated by tumor cell annihilation upon laser irradiation. The
otherwise harmless nature of these NCs in dark conditions was confirmed by in
vitro toxicity tests on two different cell lines. The presence of the deep Fe
levels constituting the IB is the origin of such enhanced PTE, which can be
used to design other high performing NC photothermal agents.Comment: 12 pages, Chemistry of Materials, 31-May-201
Lipomatous hypertrophy: an accidental finding in heart
Lipomatous hypertrophy is an uncommon benign lesion of the atrium, generally asymptomatic, characterized by unencapsulated accumulation of adipose tissue entrapping cardiomyocytes. This pathology generally remains unnoticed and often emerges as an occasional finding. Here, we report two cases from our hospital including a review of the available literature
