    TRY plant trait database - enhanced coverage and open access

    Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives

    Optically stimulated luminescence dating as a geochronological tool for late quaternary sediments in the Red Sea region

    This chapter concerns the use of luminescence methods as geochronological tools for dating Late Quaternary sediments in the Red Sea region. The dating methods all use stimulated luminescence to register signals developed in mineral systems in response to long term exposure to ionising radiation in the environment. The principles of luminescence dating are outlined followed by discussion of its application to the Arabian Peninsula, where, particularly in SE Arabia and parts of the interior, a growing corpus of work is emerging, which is helping to define past arid or humid periods of importance to palaeoclimatology and to archaeology. Turning to the Red Sea, studies conducted within the DISPERSE project are presented both in marine and terrestrial settings. The motivation for much of this work concerns definition of the environmental conditions and chronologies for hominin and human dispersion through Arabia. Data are presented which identify, for the first time, late Pleistocene evidence on the inner continental shelf near the Farasan Islands, using material from the 2013 cruise of RV AEGAEO . Results are also presented from the littoral fringe of southwest Saudi Arabia, identifying units associated with MIS5 which have palaeo-environmental and archaeological significance. It is to be hoped that further research in coming decades will continue to extend the regional chronology for the littoral fringe of the Red Sea. In this respect luminescence dating has potential to help define the environmental history of this important area, to assist with assigning marine and terrestrial features into unique stages of Quaternary climate cycles, and to promote better understanding of human-environment interactions in this dynamic area

    O objetivo deste artigo foi apresentar a Complexidade, mostrando sua importância na pesquisa em enfermagem. Trata-se de uma reflexão em duas partes: os princípios da Complexidade, de Edgar Morin; a pesquisa em enfermagem a partir da Complexidade. Considerando a complexidade que envolve os objetos de estudo da enfermagem, torna-se desejável escolher um caminho metodológico mais apropriado a sua apreensão, ou seja optar por um método que apresente maior possibilidade de retratar esta realidade. E entendendo o método como caminho da investigação acoplado a/e originário da teoria e não amarra do fazer científico, a Complexidade, de Edgar Morin, quando utilizado como escolha teórica termina sendo um guia para o caminho metodológico

    O ensino da enfermagem gerontogeriátrica e a complexidade

    Foram objetivos deste estudo: identificar as características do ensino da enfermagem gerontogeriátrica; refletir sobre este ensino, partindo das características identificadas, à luz da Complexidade. Pesquisa qualitativa, teve como fonte de dados nove livros-resumo de congressos brasileiros de enfermagem e sete periódicos da enfermagem nacional, do período de 1991 a 2000. O corpus foi composto por 16 artigos científicos e utilizou-se o QRSNUD* IST4 para análise. Os resultados mostraram a existência deste ensino, por meio de: matérias no currículo; atividades práticas; atividades durante estágio curricular; atividades extracurriculares; participação em eventos específicos ou da enfermagem, com apresentação de trabalhos; outras atividades. Refletir sobre o ensino da enfermagem gerontoriátrica, por meio da Complexidade, é perceber o ensino enquanto instância que procure transmitir uma cultura que permita ao futuro trabalhador: compreender a condição humana; pensar de forma contextualizada,aberta, globalizada, ética.The present study had the objectives of identifying the characteristics of gerontogeriatric nursing and of reflecting on this teaching, based on identified characteristics, in the light of Complexity. A qualitative research, its data sources were nine proceedings volumes of Brazilian Nursing congresses and seven Brazilian nursing publications of the 1991- 2000 period. The main body of this article was comprised of 16 scientific articles; QRSNUD* IST4 was used for analysis. Results showed that this teaching does take place, and it is carried out through: mandatory disciplines in the curriculum; practical activities; activities during curricular training; extra-curricular activities; participation on specific or general Nursing events in which studies are presented; other activities. To use the principles of omplexity is tantamount to perceiving educative teaching as trying to convey a culture that will enable future workers to understand the human condition and to think in a contextualized, open, globalized, ethical way.Los objetivos de este estudio fueron: identificar las características de la enseñanza de la enfermería gerontogeriátrica; reflexionar sobre esta enseñanza, partiendo de las características identificadas, a la luz de La Complejidad. Se trata de una investigación cualitativa que tuvo como fuente de datos nueve libros de resúmenes de congresos brasileños de enfermería y siete periódicos de enfermería nacional, del período de 1991 al 2000. El corpus estuvo compuesto por 16 artículos científicos y se utilizó el QRS-NUD*IST4 para el análisis. Los resultados mostraron la existencia de esta enseñanza, por medio de: matérias en el currículo; actividades prácticas; actividades durante la práctica curricular; actividades extracurriculares; participación en eventos específicos o de enfermería, con presentación de trabajos; otras actividades.     Este recorte bibliográfico objetivou realizar uma retrospectiva dos currículos existentes para o curso de graduação em enfermagem, desde a sua primeira escola, Escola Profissional de Enfermeiros e Enfermeiras, do Rio de Janeiro, em 1890 até a Resolução CNE/CES 3/2001, documento que estabelece o novo currículo de enfermagem em nosso país. Percebi que as mudanças de currículos foram obrigatórias e agora observo mais participação dos enfermeiros e mais interesse coletivo deles, que estão engajados em formar futuros enfermeiros mais humanistas, reflexivos e críticos

    In the light of the multiple dimensions involving the phenomenon of pain in children and adolescents with cancer, this study aimed to present a reflection on interdisciplinary practice as a healthcare resource for these patients. The study focused on the aspects related to the need for this practice in the aforementioned context and the challenges of its implementation. These reflections support the acknowledgement that the articulation among several aspects of knowledge in a common project is essential to contemplate the multiple dimensions that compose healthcare forchildren and adolescents with cancer in pain situations. However, these articulations should not only be theoretical, but also built by the professionals involved in this practice.<br>Teniendo en consideración múltiples dimensiones que involucran el fenómeno dolor en el niño y adolescente con cáncer, este trabajo tuvo por objetivo presentar una reflexión sobre la práctica interdisciplinaria como un recurso para el cuidado de estos clientes. Serán enfocados aspectos relacionados con la necesidad de esa práctica dentro de un contexto explicito y los retos para su implementación. Esas reflexiones brindan subsidios que permiten reconocer que la articulación de los diversos conocimientos en torno a un proyecto común es esencial para ue sean consideradas sus múltiples dimensiones, las que componen el cuidado al niño y al adolescente con cáncer en situaciones de dolor. Es necesario que esas articulaciones no sean apenas teóricas, sino también construidas por los profesionales involucrados.<br>Tendo em vista as múltiplas dimensões que envolvem o fenômeno da dor da criança e do adolescente com câncer, este trabalho objetivou apresentar reflexão sobre a prática interdisciplinar como recurso para o cuidado dessa clientela. Foram enfocados aspectos relativos à necessidade dessa prática no contexto explicitado e os desafios para sua implementação. Essas reflexões trazem subsídios que permitem reconhecer que a articulação dos diversos saberes, em torno de um projeto comum, é essencial para que sejam contempladas as múltiplas dimensões que compõem o cuidado à criança e ao adolescente com câncer, em situações de dor. Todavia, é necessário que essas articulações não sejam somente teóricas, mas construídas pelos profissionais envolvidos
