Singular Laplacian Growth
The general equations of motion for two dimensional Laplacian growth are
derived using the conformal mapping method. In the singular case, all
singularities of the conformal map are on the unit circle, and the map is a
degenerate Schwarz-Christoffel map. The equations of motion describe the
motions of these singularities. Despite the typical fractal-like outcomes of
Laplacian growth processes, the equations of motion are shown to be not
particularly sensitive to initial conditions. It is argued that the sensitivity
of this system derives from a novel cause, the non-uniqueness of solutions to
the differential system. By a mechanism of singularity creation, every solution
can become more complex, even in the absence of noise, without violating the
growth law. These processes are permitted, but are not required, meaning the

Congestive heart failure in rats is associated with increased expression and targeting of aquaporin-2 water channel in collecting duct
We tested whether severe congestive heart
failure (CHF), a condition associated with excess free-water retention, is accompanied by altered regulation of the vasopressin-regulated water channel, aquaporin-2 (AQP2), in the renal collecting duct. CHF was induced by left coronary artery ligation. Compared with sham-operated animals, rats with CHF had severe heart failure with elevated left ventricular end-diastolic pressures (LVEDP): 26.9 ± 3.4 vs. 4.1 ± 0.3 mmHg, and reduced plasma sodium concentrations (142.2 ± 1.6 vs. 149.1 ± 1.1 mEq/liter). Quantitative immunoblotting of total kidney membrane fractions revealed a significant increase in AQP2 expression in animals with CHF (267 ± 53%, n=12) relative to sham-operated controls (100 ± 13%, n=14). In contrast, immunoblotting demonstrated a lack of an increase in expression of AQP1 and AQP3 water channel
expression, indicating that the effect on AQP2 was selective.Furthermore, postinfarction animals without LVEDP elevation or plasma Na reduction showed no increase in AQP2 expression (121 ± 28% of sham levels, n=6). Immunocytochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy demonstrated very abundant labeling of the apical plasma membrane and relatively little labeling of intracellular vesicles in collecting duct cells from rats with severe CHF, consistent with enhanced trafficking of AQP2 to the apical plasma membrane. Comparación de las propiedades de materiales constitutivos de una superficie ecuestre profesional por medio del método de «Pista en Caja»
Bauhinia. forficata Link. subsp. pruinosa (Vogel) Fortunato & Wunderlin, crece naturalmente desde Paraguay, Sur de Brasil hasta Argentina, y tiene antecedente de uso ornamental y terapéutico (diurético, antidiarreico, hipoglucemiante). Este proyecto tiene como objetivo la caracterización de poblaciones de bauhinia forficata subsp pruinosa utilizando marcadores moleculares. Existen SSRs diseñados en taxones afines: Cercis canadensis L. y C. chinensis, de los que hay antecedentes de transferibilidad entre especies. Por ello se evaluó su transferencia en las poblaciones de Bauhinia. Estos resultados asociados a los que se obtengan de las evaluaciones quÃmicas permitirán conocer su relación con los biotipos que se identifiquen. Para esto, se extrajo ADN mediante el método de Dellaporta (1983)1 de 10 individuos del JardÃn botánico Arturo E. Ragonese, se cuantificó y se realizó PCR de los SSRs seleccionados. El producto se sembró, junto con un marcador de peso molecular, en geles desnaturalizantes de poliacrilamida en cubas de secuenciación teñidos con nitrato de plata y revelados con hidróxido de sodio. Hasta el momento, se evaluaron 15 SSRs (6 provinieron de C. chinensis y 9 de C. canandensis). De estos 15 SSRs, 11 mostraron productos de amplificación. De ellos 9 fueron polimórficos indicando diferencias interpoblacionales, que podrÃan indicar variabilidad quÃmica y por lo tanto resta correlacionar la actividad biológica de los distintos biotipos. Además, algunos SSRs mostraron más de un locus, información que respalda lo señalado por Poggio et al.2 que en la subfamilia Cercidoideae, Bauhinia (2n=28) se generó por hibridación y poliploÃdia a partir del ancestro Cercis (2n= 14). Además, se realizó el muestreo de 20 puntos de colecta distribuidas en las provincias de Misiones, Córdoba y Buenos Aires de por lo menos tres individuos por punto. Estos individuos serán evaluados mediante técnicas de SSR para determinar mediante distintos parámetros la variabilidad intra e interpoblaciona

Safety and Efficacy of Pemetrexed in Maintenance Therapy of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Lung cancer incidence continues to rise and is the number one cause of cancer death in both men and women worldwide with projected 221,130 new cases and 156,940 deaths in the United States in 2011.1 Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) represents more than 85% of the cases with most patients having either locally advanced or metastatic disease at the time of initial diagnosis, and approximately 60%–70% of them have an adenocarcinoma histologic subtype. In the last three years, we have seen several advances in the management of NSCLC, with several factors playing an important role in the treatment decision making process. Maintenance therapy has been added to the algorithm of NSCLC management and Pemetrexed has been studied as single agent or in combination in this setting with recent studies showing safety and improved progression free survival (PFS) and/or overall survival (OS), still the disease for the most part has a dismal outcome. More research work needs to be done to identify which patients truly benefit from these approaches, and to whom we should offer maintenance or switch maintenance vs. close observation
Object memory effects on figure assignment:conscious object recognition in not necessary or sufficient
AbstractIn three experiments we investigated whether conscious object recognition is necessary or sufficient for effects of object memories on figure assignment. In experiment 1, we examined a brain-damaged participant, AD, whose conscious object recognition is severely impaired. AD’s responses about figure assignment do reveal effects from memories of object structure, indicating that conscious object recognition is not necessary for these effects, and identifying the figure-ground test employed here as a new implicit test of access to memories of object structure. In experiments 2 and 3, we tested a second brain-damaged participant, WG, for whom conscious object recognition was relatively spared. Nevertheless, effects from memories of object structure on figure assignment were not evident in WG’s responses about figure assignment in experiment 2, indicating that conscious object recognition is not sufficient for effects of object memories on figure assignment. WG’s performance sheds light on AD’s performance, and has implications for the theoretical understanding of object memory effects on figure assignment
On the stability of viscous free-surface flow supported by a rotating cylinder
Using an adaptive finite-element (FE) scheme developed recently by the authors, we shed new light on the long-standing fundamental problem of the unsteady free-surface Stokes flow exterior to a circular cylinder rotating about its horizontal axis in a vertical gravitational field. For supportable loads, we observe that the steady-state is more readily attained for near-maximal fluid loads on the cylinder than for significantly sub-maximal loads. For the latter, we investigate large-time dynamics by means of a finite-difference approximation to the thin-film equations, which is also used to validate the adaptive FE simulations (applied to the full Stokes equations) for these significantly sub-maximal loads.
Conversely, by comparing results of the two methods, we assess the validity of the thin-film approximation as either the load is increased or the rotation rate of the cylinder is decreased. Results are presented on the independent effects of gravity, surface tension and initial film thickness on the decay to steady-state. Finally, new numerical simulations of load shedding are presented
