    An Analysis of Father Involvement Practices in Early Childhood: Implications for Early Intervention Service Delivery

    While research has shown the important role fathers play in young children’s lives, fathers are often not involved in Early Intervention services. This literature review will examine father involvement in early childhood programs in the United States, father involvement in early childhood programs in other countries, and staff perceptions of father involvement in early childhood programs. Findings include fathers preferred attending activities for all family members, and designed to support children’s growth and development. Fathers were not as likely to participate in men-only activities. Barriers to father involvement such as scheduling, lack of energy and resources, and child’s mother prefers to be more involved in activities were identified. Staff attitudes and perceptions of father involvement were found to help or hinder father involvement. Recommendations and implications for Early Intervention services are presented

    Bosom Buddies: Factors Associated with Experiences of Passionate Friendship Among Men and Women

    Scholars historically have separated friendships and romantic relationships into two qualitatively distinct relationship categories. Contemporary research examining passionate friendships, however, has identified qualities within platonic relationships that appear to mimic characteristics typically associated with romantic relationships. Primary critiques of the existing passionate friendship literature include exclusively examining females, including samples that predominately identified as lesbian, bisexual or questioning, and research utilizing solely qualitative designs. The current study used a quantitative design to investigate 375 emerging adults\u27 (18-26 years of age; 149 males, 226 females) friendship experiences. Specifically, four quasi-independent variables (i.e., biological sex, sexual orientation, gender-role orientation, and cross vs. same-sex dyads) were examined as factors associated with passionate friendship. Findings from this study indicated that both males and females experience passionate friendship, and that these experiences are not specific to individuals who identify as non-heterosexual. Additionally, results from this study shed light on the occurrence of passionate friendship experiences observed in both cross- and same-sex dyads. Characteristics of passionate friendships (e.g., levels of attachment, thought preoccupation, intensity of the relationship) were also examined using a newly created measure. Female participants and individuals whose closest friend was described a cross-sex friend scored higher on nearly every continuous scale of the designed measure. Additionally, sexual orientation and gender-role orientation yielded significant results on several of the identified subscales, with sexual-minority individuals and those who claimed androgynous or masculine gender-role orientation obtaining higher scores. Finally, predictability of passionate friendship occurrence was evaluated and indicated that passionate friendships may be predicted based on existing demographics or personality characteristics of an individual

    Tracking Flanker Task Dynamics: Evidence for Continuous Attentional Selectivity

    A central research goal in the cognitive sciences has been to understand the processes that underlie selective attention, or the ability to focus on goal-relevant information. Two opposing theories have been proposed in an effort to explain how selective attention emerges: one suggests that attention improves continuously over time, whereas the other proposes that attention improves at a discrete time point. While outcome-based data (e.g., reaction time) have successfully provided evidence for both accounts, there has been no empirical evidence to differentiate them. In this study, we used mouse-tracking in a flanker task that provided time sensitive measures associated with selective attention. Specifically, we recorded the path of real-time movement trajectories to assess characteristics of continuous and discrete shifts in selective attention. Our results strongly suggested that selective attention increased gradually over time, as opposed to at a discrete point, thus providing support for a continuous account of selective attention

    Habitat Condition and Associated Macrofauna Reflect Differences Between Protected and Exposed Seagrass Landscapes

    Seagrass landscape configurations associated with different physical settings can affect habitat-structure and plant-animal relationships. We compared shoal grass (Halodule wrightii) habitat and macrofaunal variables between two fragmented seagrass landscapes at barrier-island locations subject to different disturbance regimes. Five seagrass habitat variables including above ground biomass (AGB), shoot number, per shoot biomass, epiphyte biomass and below ground biomass (BGB), differed significantly between the island landscapes. Per shoot biomass and epiphyte biomass also varied significantly over the seagrass growing season; and epiphyte biomass showed a strong landscape-time interaction. Abundances of microgastropods normalized to AGB differed significantly between landscapes. An inverse relationship between the abundance of microgastropods and epiphyte loading suggests a possible functional link. However, additional temporal mismatch between epiphyte loading and microgastropod abundance indicates that controls on epiphyte loading were complex. Seagrass habitat was more fragmented within the Cat Island (CI) landscape. Wind direction and strength imply that the CI landscape experienced more physical disturbance than the Horn Island (HI) landscape. This study highlights some potential links involving landscape configuration, habitat structure, and macrofaunal associations which can be further addressed using hypothesis-driven research

    Treatment of Monozygotic Twins With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Using Cognitive Therapy and Exposure With Ritual Prevention

    BACKGROUND: Assessment and treatment of cohabiting monozygotic (MZ) twins with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a possible challenge for clinical psychologists. AIMS: This study aims to present a detailed history of two sets of cohabiting MZ twins with OCD, and describe the adaption of cognitive behavior therapy in their treatments. METHOD: Two sets of cohabiting MZ twins completed a structured intake and the Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale as well as measures of depression, anxiety, a measure of obsessive beliefs, and thought action fusion. One set received cognitive behavior therapy and exposure with ritual prevention (ERP) simultaneously and the other received ERP separately. Pre-, post-treatment and follow-up assessments occurred for both sets of twins. RESULTS: All four individuals showed notable decreases in OCD, and results were maintained for three of the four participants at follow-up points. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the developmental course of OCD that can occur in cohabiting twins, and the clinical adaption that may be necessary

    The Differential Efficacy of Pemetrexed According to NSCLC Histology: A Review of Two Phase III Studies

    Abstract Background. Recent studies of pemetrexed have identified a predictive role for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) histology. We further reviewed the differential efficacy of pemetrexed according to histology in two large, phase III NSCLC trials. Methods. One study tested pemetrexed versus docetaxel in previously treated patients (n = 571) and the other tested cisplatin plus pemetrexed versus cisplatin plus gemcitabine in chemotherapy-naive patients (n = 1,725) with advanced NSCLC. Cox proportional hazard models were used to test for covariate-adjusted treatment-by-histology interactions (THIs) for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). For each histologic subgroup, the Kaplan–Meier method was used to estimate unadjusted within-arm medians, and Cox models were used to estimate covariate-adjusted between-arm hazard ratios (HRs). Results. In both studies, treatment arms were well balanced for histology. THIs were statistically significant (p < .005) for both OS and PFS. Nonsquamous patients treated with pemetrexed-based therapy experienced longer survival than the comparators (HR, 0.78 and 0.84, respectively), whereas squamous patients had shorter survival (HR, 1.56 and 1.23, respectively). Whereas the efficacy of pemetrexed regimens differed according to histology, it did not differ for docetaxel or for cisplatin plus gemcitabine. Pemetrexed was well tolerated across histologic groups. Conclusions. The consistency of these results across studies confirms the predictive effect of histology for pemetrexed and the survival advantage for pemetrexed in patients with nonsquamous histology. These analyses suggest pemetrexed should not be recommended for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma, but, because of efficacy and safety advantages, pemetrexed may be preferable to other agents for treatment of patients with nonsquamous NSCLC

    Evidence for shock-heated gas in the Taffy Galaxies and Bridge from Optical Emission-Line IFU spectroscopy

    We present optical IFU observations of the Taffy system (UGC 12914/15); named for the radio emission that stretches between the two galaxies. Given that these gas rich galaxies are believed to have recently collided head-on, the pair exhibits a surprisingly normal total (sub-LIRG) IR luminosity (LFIR∌4.5×1010\mathrm{L_{FIR} \sim 4.5 \times 10^{10}} L⊙_\odot). Previous observations have demonstrated that a large quantity of molecular and neutral gas have been drawn out of the galaxies into a massive multi-phase bridge. We present, for the first time, spatially resolved spectroscopy of the ionized gas in the system. The results show that the ionized gas is highly disturbed kinematically, with gas spread in two main filaments between the two galaxies. The line profiles exhibit widespread double components in both the bridge and parts of the disks of the galaxies. We investigate the spatial distribution of the excitation properties of the ionized gas using emission-line diagnostic diagrams, and conclude that large quantities (up to 40%\%) of the emission from the entire system is consistent with gas heated in ∌\sim200 \kms\ shocks. While the shocked gas is mainly associated with the bridge, there is a significant amount of shocked gas associated with both galaxies. Confirming other multi-wavelength indicators, the results suggest that the effects of shocks and turbulence can continue to be felt in a high-speed galaxy collision long after the collision has occurred. The persistence of shocks in the Taffy system may explain the relatively low current star formation rates in the system as a whole.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap

    AGN effect on cooling flow dynamics

    We analyzed the feedback of AGN jets on cooling flow clusters using three-dimensional AMR hydrodynamic simulations. We studied the interaction of the jet with the intracluster medium and creation of low X-ray emission cavities (Bubbles) in cluster plasma. The distribution of energy input by the jet into the system was quantified in its different forms, i.e. internal, kinetic and potential. We find that the energy associated with the bubbles, (pV + gamma pV/(gamma-1)), accounts for less than 10 percent of the jet energy.Comment: "Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Science
