On Hydrodynamic Motions in Dead Zones
We investigate fluid motions near the midplane of vertically stratified
accretion disks with highly resistive midplanes. In such disks, the
magnetorotational instability drives turbulence in thin layers surrounding a
resistive, stable dead zone. The turbulent layers in turn drive motions in the
dead zone. We examine the properties of these motions using three-dimensional,
stratified, local, shearing-box, non-ideal, magnetohydrodynamical simulations.
Although the turbulence in the active zones provides a source of vorticity to
the midplane, no evidence for coherent vortices is found in our simulations. It
appears that this is because of strong vertical oscillations in the dead zone.
By analyzing time series of azimuthally-averaged flow quantities, we identify
an axisymmetric wave mode particular to models with dead zones. This mode is
reduced in amplitude, but not suppressed entirely, by changing the equation of
state from isothermal to ideal. These waves are too low-frequency to affect
sedimentation of dust to the midplane, but may have significance for the
gravitational stability of the resulting midplane dust layers.Comment: 36 pages, 19 figures. ApJ accepte

In addition, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) systems were implemented in order speed the legal process and reduce litigation costs. Correlating Changes in Spot Filling Factors with Stellar Rotation: The Case of LkCa 4
We present a multi-epoch spectroscopic study of LkCa 4, a heavily spotted
non-accreting T Tauri star. Using SpeX at NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility
(IRTF), 12 spectra were collected over five consecutive nights, spanning
1.5 stellar rotations. Using the IRTF SpeX Spectral Library, we
constructed empirical composite models of spotted stars by combining a warmer
(photosphere) standard star spectrum with a cooler (spot) standard weighted by
the spot filling factor, . The best-fit models spanned two
photospheric component temperatures, = 4100 K (K7V) and 4400 K
(K5V), and one spot component temperature, = 3060 K (M5V) with an
of 0.3. We find values of to vary between 0.77 and 0.94 with
an average uncertainty of 0.04. The variability of is periodic
and correlates with its 3.374 day rotational period. Using a mean value for
to represent the total spot coverage, we calculated spot
corrected values for and . Placing these values alongside
evolutionary models developed for heavily spotted young stars, we infer mass
and age ranges of 0.45-0.6 and 0.50-1.25 Myr, respectively. These
inferred values represent a twofold increase in the mass and a twofold decrease
in the age as compared to standard evolutionary models. Such a result
highlights the need for constraining the contributions of cool and warm regions
of young stellar atmospheres when estimating and to infer
masses and ages as well as the necessity for models to account for the effects

Does amyloid deposition produce a specific atrophic signature in cognitively normal subjects?☆
The objective of our study was to evaluate whether cognitively normal (CN) elderly participants showing elevated cortical beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition have a consistent neuroanatomical signature of brain atrophy that may characterize preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD). 115 CN participants who were Aβ-positive (CN +) by amyloid PET imaging; 115 CN participants who were Aβ-negative (CN −); and 88 Aβ-positive mild cognitive impairment or AD participants (MCI/AD +) were identified. Cortical thickness (FreeSurfer) and gray matter volume (SPM5) were measured for 28 regions-of-interest (ROIs) across the brain and compared across groups. ROIs that best discriminated CN − from CN + differed for FreeSurfer cortical thickness and SPM5 gray matter volume. Group-wise discrimination was poor with a high degree of uncertainty in terms of the rank ordering of ROIs. In contrast, both techniques showed strong and consistent findings comparing MCI/AD + to both CN − and CN + groups, with entorhinal cortex, middle and inferior temporal lobe, inferior parietal lobe, and hippocampus providing the best discrimination for both techniques. Concordance across techniques was higher for the CN − and CN + versus MCI/AD + comparisons, compared to the CN − versus CN + comparison. The weak and inconsistent nature of the findings across technique in this study cast doubt on the existence of a reliable neuroanatomical signature of preclinical AD in elderly PiB-positive CN participants
Three microarray platforms: an analysis of their concordance in profiling gene expression
BACKGROUND: Microarrays for the analysis of gene expression are of three different types: short oligonucleotide (25–30 base), long oligonucleotide (50–80 base), and cDNA (highly variable in length). The short oligonucleotide and cDNA arrays have been the mainstay of expression analysis to date, but long oligonucleotide platforms are gaining in popularity and will probably replace cDNA arrays. As part of a validation study for the long oligonucleotide arrays, we compared and contrasted expression profiles from the three formats, testing RNA from six different cell lines against a universal reference standard. RESULTS: The three platforms had 6430 genes in common. In general, correlation of gene expression levels across the platforms was good when defined by concordance in the direction of expression difference (upregulation or downregulation), scatter plot analysis, principal component analysis, cell line correlation or quantitative RT-PCR. The overall correlations (r values) between platforms were in the range 0.7 to 0.8, as determined by analysis of scatter plots. When concordance was measured for expression ratios significant at p-values of <0.05 and at expression threshold levels of 1.5 and 2-fold, the agreement among the platforms was very high, ranging from 93% to 100%. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that the long oligonucleotide platform is highly suitable for expression analysis and compares favorably with the cDNA and short oligonucleotide varieties. All three platforms can give similar and reproducible results if the criterion is the direction of change in gene expression and minimal emphasis is placed on the magnitude of change
Disk-Jet Connection in the Radio Galaxy 3C 120
We present the results of extensive multi-frequency monitoring of the radio
galaxy 3C 120 between 2002 and 2007 at X-ray, optical, and radio wave bands, as
well as imaging with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Over the 5 yr of
observation, significant dips in the X-ray light curve are followed by
ejections of bright superluminal knots in the VLBA images. Consistent with
this, the X-ray flux and 37 GHz flux are anti-correlated with X-ray leading the
radio variations. This implies that, in this radio galaxy, the radiative state
of accretion disk plus corona system, where the X-rays are produced, has a
direct effect on the events in the jet, where the radio emission originates.
The X-ray power spectral density of 3C 120 shows a break, with steeper slope at
shorter timescale and the break timescale is commensurate with the mass of the
central black hole based on observations of Seyfert galaxies and black hole
X-ray binaries. These findings provide support for the paradigm that black hole
X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei are fundamentally similar systems,
with characteristic time and size scales linearly proportional to the mass of
the central black hole. The X-ray and optical variations are strongly
correlated in 3C 120, which implies that the optical emission in this object
arises from the same general region as the X-rays, i.e., in the accretion
disk-corona system. We numerically model multi-wavelength light curves of 3C
120 from such a system with the optical-UV emission produced in the disk and
the X-rays generated by scattering of thermal photons by hot electrons in the
corona. From the comparison of the temporal properties of the model light
curves to that of the observed variability, we constrain the physical size of

Plasma‐derived biomarkers of Alzheimer\u27s disease and neuropsychiatric symptoms: A community‐based study
INTRODUCTION: We examined associations between plasma-derived biomarkers of Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study involving 1005 persons ≥50 years of age (mean 74 years, 564 male, 118 cognitively impaired), who completed plasma-derived biomarker (amyloid beta 42 [Aβ42]/Aβ40, phosphorylated tau 181 [p-tau181], p-tau217, total tau [t-tau], neurofilament light [NfL]), and NPS assessment.
RESULTS: P-tau181 (odds ratio [OR] 2.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.41–3.00, p < 0.001), p-tau217 (OR 1.70, 95% CI 1.10–2.61, p = 0.016), and t-tau (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.08–1.92, p = 0.012) were associated with appetite change. We also found that p-tau181 and p-tau217 were associated with increased symptoms of agitation (OR 1.93, 95% CI 1.20–3.11, p = 0.007 and OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.21–3.42, p = 0.007, respectively), and disinhibition (OR 2.39, 95% CI 1.45–3.93, p = 0.001 and OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.33–3.98, p = 0.003, respectively). Aβ42/Aβ40 and NfL were not associated with NPS.
CONCLUSION: Higher plasma-derived p-tau181 and p-tau217 levels are associated with increased symptoms of appetite change, agitation, and disinhibition. These findings may support the validity of plasma tau biomarkers for predicting behavioral symptoms that often accompany cognitive impairment.
