Germanium coated microbridge and method
A superconducting microbridge is provided for use in superconducting quantum interference devices wherein a pair of spaced layers of superconductive material are connected by a weak link bridge to establish an electrical junction. The superconductive layers and bridge are coated with a semiconductor material shunting the bridge at room temperatures to prevent the destruction of the device by minute electrical currents while the coating acts as a dielectric permitting normal electrical behavior of the microbridge at cryogenic temperatures
Multifrequency EPR Studies of [Cu^(1.5)Cu^(1.5)]+ for Cu_2(μ-NR_2)_2 and Cu_2(μ-PR_2)_2 Diamond Cores
Multifrequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is used to explore the electronic structures of a series of dicopper complexes of the type {(LXL)Cu}_2^+. These complexes contain two four-coordinate copper centers of highly distorted tetrahedral geometries linked by two [LXL]^− ligands featuring bridging amido or phosphido ligands and associated thioether or phosphine chelate donors. Specific chelating [LXL]^− ligands examined in this study include bis(2-tert-butylsulfanylphenyl)amide (SNS), bis(2-di-iso-butylphosphinophenyl)amide (PNP), and bis(2-di-iso-propylphosphinophenyl)phosphide (PPP). To better map the electronic coupling to copper, nitrogen, and phosphorus in these complexes, X-, S-, and Q-band EPR spectra have been obtained for each complex. The resulting EPR parameters implied by computer simulation are unusual for typical dicopper complexes and are largely consistent with previously published X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory data, where a highly covalent {Cu_2(μ-XR_2)_2}^+ diamond core has been assigned in which removal of an electron from the neutral {Cu_2(μ-XR_2)_2} can be viewed as ligand-centered to a substantial degree. To our knowledge, this is the first family of dicopper diamond core model complexes for which the compendium of X-, S-, and Q-band EPR spectra have been collected for comparison to Cu_A
Characterizations of linear sufficient statistics
A surjective bounded linear operator T from a Banach space X to a Banach space Y must be a sufficient statistic for a dominated family of probability measures defined on the Borel sets of X. These results were applied, so that they characterize linear sufficient statistics for families of the exponential type, including as special cases the Wishart and multivariate normal distributions. The latter result was used to establish precisely which procedures for sampling from a normal population had the property that the sample mean was a sufficient statistic
Two-way coupling of FENE dumbbells with a turbulent shear flow
We present numerical studies for finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE)
dumbbells which are dispersed in a turbulent plane shear flow at moderate
Reynolds number. The polymer ensemble is described on the mesoscopic level by a
set of stochastic ordinary differential equations with Brownian noise. The
dynamics of the Newtonian solvent is determined by the Navier-Stokes equations.
Momentum transfer of the dumbbells with the solvent is implemented by an
additional volume forcing term in the Navier-Stokes equations, such that both
components of the resulting viscoelastic fluid are connected by a two-way
coupling. The dynamics of the dumbbells is given then by Newton's second law of
motion including small inertia effects. We investigate the dynamics of the flow
for different degrees of dumbbell elasticity and inertia, as given by
Weissenberg and Stokes numbers, respectively. For the parameters accessible in
our study, the magnitude of the feedback of the polymers on the macroscopic
properties of turbulence remains small as quantified by the global energy
budget and the Reynolds stresses. A reduction of the turbulent drag by up to
20% is observed for the larger particle inertia. The angular statistics of the
dumbbells shows an increasing alignment with the mean flow direction for both,
increasing elasticity and inertia. This goes in line with a growing asymmetry
of the probability density function of the transverse derivative of the
streamwise turbulent velocity component. We find that dumbbells get stretched
referentially in regions where vortex stretching or bi-axial strain dominate

Educational Software for Rating and Sizing Chemical Reactors
An educational software for Rating and Sizing Chemical Reactors is presented in this work. The user-friendly software designed using C# is presented in a step-by-step, simple-to-follow format. Design equations are analyzed for batch and flow reactors. Having been tested with sample problems from relevant literatures, it is believed that it can serve as an important tool in solving chemical Reaction Engineering problems. Results obtained show a high level of accuracy, although with slight differences from that obtained in the literature. This can be attributed to truncation errors when using manual calculation method

Teaching a New Dog Old Tricks: Resurrecting Multilingual Retrieval Using Zero-shot Learning
While billions of non-English speaking users rely on search engines every
day, the problem of ad-hoc information retrieval is rarely studied for
non-English languages. This is primarily due to a lack of data set that are
suitable to train ranking algorithms. In this paper, we tackle the lack of data
by leveraging pre-trained multilingual language models to transfer a retrieval
system trained on English collections to non-English queries and documents. Our
model is evaluated in a zero-shot setting, meaning that we use them to predict
relevance scores for query-document pairs in languages never seen during
training. Our results show that the proposed approach can significantly
outperform unsupervised retrieval techniques for Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, and
Spanish. We also show that augmenting the English training collection with some

Fractal Markets Hypothesis and the Global Financial Crisis: Scaling, Investment Horizons and Liquidity
We investigate whether fractal markets hypothesis and its focus on liquidity
and invest- ment horizons give reasonable predictions about dynamics of the
financial markets during the turbulences such as the Global Financial Crisis of
late 2000s. Compared to the mainstream efficient markets hypothesis, fractal
markets hypothesis considers financial markets as com- plex systems consisting
of many heterogenous agents, which are distinguishable mainly with respect to
their investment horizon. In the paper, several novel measures of trading
activity at different investment horizons are introduced through scaling of
variance of the underlying processes. On the three most liquid US indices -
DJI, NASDAQ and S&P500 - we show that predictions of fractal markets hypothesis
