On the Study of Collective Dynamics in Supercooled Liquids through the Statistics of the Iso-Configurational Ensemble
The use of the isoconfigurational ensemble to explore structure-dynamic
correlations in supercooled liquids is examined. The statistical error of the
dynamic propensity and its spatial distribution are determined. The authors
present the spatial distribution of the particle non-Gaussian parameter as a
measure of the intermittency with which particles exhibit their propensity for
motion. The ensemble average of the direction of particle motion is introduced
to establish the anisotropy of the dynamic propensity.Comment: Published - see below or

Clinical outcomes for sexual and gender minority adolescents in a dialectical behaviour therapy programme
Background:
Sexuality and gender minoritised (SGM) adolescents are at increased risk of self-injury and suicide, and experience barriers to accessing mental health support. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is an effective treatment for self-injury and emotion dysregulation in adolescent populations, but few studies have published outcomes of DBT for SGM young people.
Aims:
This study aimed to investigate treatment outcomes and completion for SGM adolescents and their cisgender and heterosexual peers, in the National & Specialist CAMHS, DBT service (UK).
Method:
Treatment completion, and opting out before and during treatment were examined for sexual and gender identity groups, as well as changes by the end of treatment in emotion dysregulation, self-injury, in-patient bed-days, emergency department attendances, and borderline personality disorder, depression and anxiety symptoms.
Results:
SGM adolescents were over-represented in this service, even after considering their increased risk for self-injury. No statistically significant differences were found for treatment completion between the sexual orientation and gender identity groups, although there were patterns indicating possible lower treatment uptake and completion that warrant further investigation. Clinical outcomes for treatment-completers showed improvement by the end of DBT for each group, with few exceptions.
Discussion:
These results are from relatively small subsamples, and it was not possible to separate by sex assigned at birth. Findings should be treated tentatively and as early indications of effect sizes to inform future studies. This study suggests that DBT could be a useful treatment for SGM adolescents in a highly specialist treatment setting
Resolving the Surfaces of Extrasolar Planets With Secondary Eclipse Light Curves
We present a method that employs the secondary eclipse light curves of
transiting extrasolar planets to probe the spatial variation of their thermal
emission. This technique permits an observer to resolve the surface of the
planet without the need to spatially resolve its central star. We evaluate the
feasibility of this technique for the HD 209458 system [..]. We consider two
representations of the planetary thermal emission; a simple model parameterized
by a sinusoidal dependence on longitude and latitude, as well as the results of
a three-dimensional dynamical simulation of the planetary atmosphere previously
published by Cooper & Showman. We find that observations of the secondary
eclipse light curve are most sensitive to a longitudinal offset in the
geometric and photometric centroids of the hemisphere of the planet visible
near opposition. To quantify this signal, we define a new parameter, the
``uniform time offset,'' which measures the time lag between the observed
secondary eclipse and that predicted by a planet with a uniform surface flux
distribution. We compare the predicted amplitude of this parameter for HD
209458 with the precision with which it could be measured with IRAC. We find
that IRAC observations at 3.6um a single secondary eclipse should permit
sufficient precision to confirm or reject the Cooper & Showman model of the
surface flux distribution for this planet. We quantify the signal-to-noise
ratio for this offset in the remaining IRAC bands (4.5um, 5.8um, and 8.0um),
and find that a modest improvement in photometric precision (as might be
realized through observations of several eclipse events) should permit a

Irreversible reorganization in a supercooled liquid originates from localised soft modes
The transition of a fluid to a rigid glass upon cooling is a common route of
transformation from liquid to solid that embodies the most poorly understood
features of both phases1,2,3. From the liquid perspective, the puzzle is to
understand stress relaxation in the disordered state. From the perspective of
solids, the challenge is to extend our description of structure and its
mechanical consequences to materials without long range order. Using computer
simulations, we show that the localized low frequency normal modes of a
configuration in a supercooled liquid are causally correlated to the
irreversible structural reorganization of the particles within that
configuration. We also demonstrate that the spatial distribution of these soft
local modes can persist in spite of significant particle reorganization. The
consequence of these two results is that it is now feasible to construct a
theory of relaxation length scales in glass-forming liquids without recourse to
dynamics and to explicitly relate molecular properties to their collective

Morphologies of Galaxies in and around a Protocluster at z=2.300
We present results from the first robust investigation of galaxy morphology
as a function of environment at z>1.5. Our study is motivated by the fact that
star-forming galaxies contained within a protocluster at z=2.3 in the HS1700+64
field have significantly older ages and larger stellar masses on average than
those at similar redshifts but more typical environmental densities. In the
analysis of HST/ACS images, we apply non-parametric statistics to characterize
the rest-frame UV morphologies of a sample of 85 UV-selected star-forming
galaxies at z=1.7-2.9, 22 of which are contained in the protocluster. The
remaining 63 control-sample galaxies are not in the protocluster but have a
similar mean redshift of ~2.3. We find no environmental dependence for the
distributions of morphological properties. Combining the measured morphologies
with the results of population synthesis modeling, we find only weak
correlations, if any, between morphological and stellar population properties
such as stellar mass, age, extinction and star-formation rate. Given the
incomplete census of the protocluster galaxy population, and the lack of
correlation between rest-frame UV morphology and star-formation history at z~2
within our sample, the absence of environmental trends in the distribution of
morphological properties is not surprising. Additionally, using a larger sample
of photometric candidates, we compare morphological distributions for 282
UV-selected and 43 near-IR-selected galaxies. While the difference in the
degree of nebulosity between the two samples appears to be a byproduct of the
fainter average rest-frame UV surface brightness of the near-IR-selected
galaxies, we find that, among the lowest surface brightness galaxies, the
near-IR-selected objects have significantly smaller angular sizes (abridged).Comment: 25 pages including 16 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ.

Synthesis of 3-D coronal-solar wind energetic particle acceleration modules
1. Introduction Acute space radiation hazards pose one of the most serious risks to future human and robotic exploration. Large solar energetic particle (SEP) events are dangerous to astronauts and equipment. The ability to predict when and where large SEPs will occur is necessary in order to mitigate their hazards. The Coronal-Solar Wind Energetic Particle Acceleration (C-SWEPA) modeling effort in the NASA/NSF Space Weather Modeling Collaborative [Schunk, 2014] combines two successful Living With a Star (LWS) (http://lws. gsfc.nasa.gov/) strategic capabilities: the Earth-Moon-Mars Radiation Environment Modules (EMMREM) [Schwadron et al., 2010] that describe energetic particles and their effects, with the Next Generation Model for the Corona and Solar Wind developed by the Predictive Science, Inc. (PSI) group. The goal of the C-SWEPA effort is to develop a coupled model that describes the conditions of the corona, solar wind, coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and associated shocks, particle acceleration, and propagation via physics-based modules. Assessing the threat of SEPs is a difficult problem. The largest SEPs typically arise in conjunction with X class flares and very fast (\u3e1000 km/s) CMEs. These events are usually associated with complex sunspot groups (also known as active regions) that harbor strong, stressed magnetic fields. Highly energetic protons generated in these events travel near the speed of light and can arrive at Earth minutes after the eruptive event. The generation of these particles is, in turn, believed to be primarily associated with the shock wave formed very low in the corona by the passage of the CME (injection of particles from the flare site may also play a role). Whether these particles actually reach Earth (or any other point) depends on their transport in the interplanetary magnetic field and their magnetic connection to the shock
The simulation of action disorganisation in complex activities of daily living
Action selection in everyday goal-directed tasks of moderate complexity is known to be subject to breakdown following extensive frontal brain injury. A model of action selection in such tasks is presented and used to explore three hypotheses concerning the origins of action disorganisation: that it is a consequence of reduced top-down excitation within a hierarchical action schema network coupled with increased bottom-up triggering of schemas from environmental sources, that it is a more general disturbance of schema activation modelled by excessive noise in the schema network, and that it results from a general disturbance of the triggering of schemas by object representations. Results suggest that the action disorganisation syndrome is best accounted for by a general disturbance to schema activation, while altering the balance between top-down and bottom-up activation provides an account of a related disorder - utilisation behaviour. It is further suggested that ideational apraxia (which may result from lesions to left temporoparietal areas and which has similar behavioural consequences to action disorganisation syndrome on tasks of moderate complexity) is a consequence of a generalised disturbance of the triggering of schemas by object representations. Several predictions regarding differences between action disorganisation syndrome and ideational apraxia that follow from this interpretation are detailed
The elevated Curie temperature and half-metallicity in the ferromagnetic semiconductor LaEuO
Here we study the effect of La doping in EuO thin films using SQUID
magnetometry, muon spin rotation (SR), polarized neutron reflectivity
(PNR), and density functional theory (DFT). The SR data shows that the
LaEuO is homogeneously magnetically ordered up to its
elevated . It is concluded that bound magnetic polaron behavior does
not explain the increase in and an RKKY-like interaction is
consistent with the SR data. The estimation of the magnetic moment by DFT
simulations concurs with the results obtained by PNR, showing a reduction of
the magnetic moment per LaEuO for increasing lanthanum doping.
This reduction of the magnetic moment is explained by the reduction of the
number of Eu-4 electrons present in all the magnetic interactions in EuO
films. Finally, we show that an upwards shift of the Fermi energy with La or Gd
doping gives rise to half-metallicity for doping levels as high as 3.2 %.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure
New Spirometry Indices for Detecting Mild Airflow Obstruction.
The diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) relies on demonstration of airflow obstruction. Traditional spirometric indices miss a number of subjects with respiratory symptoms or structural lung disease on imaging. We hypothesized that utilizing all data points on the expiratory spirometry curves to assess their shape will improve detection of mild airflow obstruction and structural lung disease. We analyzed spirometry data of 8307 participants enrolled in the COPDGene study, and derived metrics of airflow obstruction based on the shape on the volume-time (Parameter D), and flow-volume curves (Transition Point and Transition Distance). We tested associations of these parameters with CT measures of lung disease, respiratory morbidity, and mortality using regression analyses. There were significant correlations between FEV1/FVC with Parameter D (r = -0.83; p < 0.001), Transition Point (r = 0.69; p < 0.001), and Transition Distance (r = 0.50; p < 0.001). All metrics had significant associations with emphysema, small airway disease, dyspnea, and respiratory-quality of life (p < 0.001). The highest quartile for Parameter D was independently associated with all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 3.22,95% CI 2.42-4.27; p < 0.001) but a substantial number of participants in the highest quartile were categorized as GOLD 0 and 1 by traditional criteria (1.8% and 33.7%). Parameter D identified an additional 9.5% of participants with mild or non-recognized disease as abnormal with greater burden of structural lung disease compared with controls. The data points on the flow-volume and volume-time curves can be used to derive indices of airflow obstruction that identify additional subjects with disease who are deemed to be normal by traditional criteria
