    International Trade with Endogenous Mode of Competition in General Equilibrium

    This paper endogenizes the extent of intra-sectoral competition in a multi-sectoral general-equilibrium model of oligopoly and trade. Firms choose capacity followed by prices. If the benefits of capacity investment in a given sector are below a threshold level, the sector exhibits Bertrand behaviour, otherwise it exhibits Cournot behaviour. By endogenizing the threshold parameter in general equilibrium, we show how exogenous shocks such as globalization and technological change alter the mix of sectors between “more” and “less” competitive, or Bertrand and Cournot, and affect the relative wages of skilled and unskilled workers, even in a “North-North” model with identical countries.

    Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results are used to study the pseudo-6-fold nature of the (100) surface of the orthorhombic quasicrystal approximant Al4(Cr, Fe). LEED patterns are also presented from the pseudo-10-fold (010) surface of this material. In each case the results are compared with the known bulk structure of this complex metallic alloy

    In vivo evidence for NMDA receptor mediated excitotoxicity in a murine genetic model of Huntington Disease

    N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) mediated excitotoxicity is implicated as a proximate cause of neurodegeneration in Huntington Disease (HD). However, this hypothesis has not been tested rigorously in vivo. NMDAR NR2B-subunits are the predominant NR2 subunit expressed by the striatal medium spiny neurons that degenerate in HD. To test this hypothesis, we crossed a well validated murine genetic model of HD (Hdh(CAG)150) with a transgenic line overexpressing NMDAR NR2B-subunits. In the resulting double mutant line, we show exacerbation of selective striatal neuron degeneration. These results provide the first direct in vivo evidence of NR2B-NMDAR mediated excitotoxicity in the context of HD. Our results are consistent with prior suggestions that direct and/or indirect interactions of mutant huntingtin with NMDARs are a proximate cause of neurodegeneration in HD

    Locally optimal unstructured finite element meshes in 3 dimensions

    This paper investigates the adaptive finite element solution of a general class of variational problems in three dimensions using a combination of node movement, edge swapping, face swapping and node insertion. The adaptive strategy proposed is a generalization of previous work in two dimensions and is based upon the construction of a hierarchy of locally optimal meshes. Results presented, both for a single equation and a system of coupled equations, suggest that this approach is able to produce better meshes of tetrahedra than those obtained by more conventional adaptive strategies and in a relatively efficient manner
