Time-reversal frameness and superselection
We show that appropriate superpositions of motional states are a reference
frame resource that enables breaking of time -reversal superselection so that
two parties lacking knowledge about the other's direction of time can still
communicate. We identify the time-reversal reference frame resource states and
determine the corresponding frameness monotone, which connects time-reversal
frameness to entanglement. In contradistinction to other studies of reference
frame quantum resources, this is the first analysis that involves an
antiunitary rather than unitary representation.Comment: 10 p
Primordial magnetic field and spectral distortion of cosmic background radiation
The role played by a primordial magnetic field during the pre-recombination
epoch is analysed through the cyclotron radiation (due to the free electrons)
it might produce in the primordial plasma. We discuss the constraint implied by

Milk whey protein concentration and mRNA associated with β-lactoglobulin phenotype
Two common genetic variants of β-lactoglobulin (β-lg), A and B, exist as co- dominant alleles in dairy cattle (Aschaffenburg, 1968). Numerous studies have shown that cows homozygous for β-lg A have more β-lg and less ι-lactalbumin (ι-la) and casein in their milk than cows expressing only the B variant of β-lg (Ng-Kwai-Hang et al. 1987; Graml et al. 1989; Hill, 1993; Hill et al. 1995, 1997). These differences have a significant impact on the processing characteristics of the milk. For instance, the moisture-adjusted yield of Cheddar cheese is up to 10% higher using milk from cows of the β-lg BB phenotype compared with milk from cows expressing only the A variant (Hill et al. 1997). All these studies, however, describe compositional differences associated with β-lg phenotype in established lactation only. No information is available on the first few weeks of lactation, when there are marked changes in the concentrations of β-lg and ι-la (PÊrez et al. 1990)
Effect of nonnegativity on estimation errors in one-qubit state tomography with finite data
We analyze the behavior of estimation errors evaluated by two loss functions,
the Hilbert-Schmidt distance and infidelity, in one-qubit state tomography with
finite data. We show numerically that there can be a large gap between the
estimation errors and those predicted by an asymptotic analysis. The origin of
this discrepancy is the existence of the boundary in the state space imposed by
the requirement that density matrices be nonnegative (positive semidefinite).
We derive an explicit form of a function reproducing the behavior of the
estimation errors with high accuracy by introducing two approximations: a
Gaussian approximation of the multinomial distributions of outcomes, and
linearizing the boundary. This function gives us an intuition for the behavior
of the expected losses for finite data sets. We show that this function can be
used to determine the amount of data necessary for the estimation to be treated
reliably with the asymptotic theory. We give an explicit expression for this
amount, which exhibits strong sensitivity to the true quantum state as well as

Saturn Forms by Core Accretion in 3.4 Myr
We present two new in situ core accretion simulations of Saturn with planet
formation timescales of 3.37 Myr (model S0) and 3.48 Myr (model S1), consistent
with observed protostellar disk lifetimes. In model S0, we assume rapid grain
settling reduces opacity due to grains from full interstellar values (Podolak
2003). In model S1, we do not invoke grain settling, instead assigning full
interstellar opacities to grains in the envelope. Surprisingly, the two models
produce nearly identical formation timescales and core/atmosphere mass ratios.
We therefore observe a new manifestation of core accretion theory: at large
heliocentric distances, the solid core growth rate (limited by Keplerian
orbital velocity) controls the planet formation timescale. We argue that this

The E6 protein from vaccinia virus is required for the formation of immature virions.
An IPTG-inducible mutant in the E6R gene of vaccinia virus was used to study the role of the E6 virion core protein in viral replication. In the absence of the inducer, the mutant exhibited a normal pattern DNA replication, concatemer resolution and late gene expression, but it showed an inhibition of virion structural protein processing it failed to produce infectious particles. Electron microscopic analysis showed that in the absence of IPTG viral morphogenesis was arrested before IV formation: crescents, aberrant or empty IV-like structures, and large aggregated virosomes were observed throughout the cytoplasm. The addition of IPTG to release a 12-h block showed that virus infectious particles could be formed in the absence of de novo DNA synthesis. Our observations show that in the absence of E6 the association of viroplasm with viral membrane crescents is impaired
Acute military psychiatric casualties from the war in Iraq
Background: The view that most military personnel evacuated from war zones are suffering from combat stress reactions, or are otherwise traumatised by the horrors of war, has an impact on all aspects of military psychiatry.
Aims: To delineate the reasons for psychiatric aeromedical evacuation from Iraq from the start of build-up of UK forces in January 2003 until the end of October that year, 6 months after the end of formal hostilities.
Method: A retrospective study was conducted of field and in-patient psychiatric assessments of 116 military personnel evacuated to the UK military psychiatric in-patient facility in Catterick Garrison.
Results: Evacuees were mainly non-combatants (69%). A significant proportion were in reserve service (21%) and had a history of contact with mental health services (37%). Only 3% had a combat stress reaction. In over 85% of cases evacuation was for low mood attributed to separation from friends or family, or difficulties adjusting to the environment.
Conclusions: These findings have implications especially for screening for suitability for deployment, and for understanding any longer-term mental health problems arising in veterans from Iraq

The vast amount of knowledge about past human societies has not been systematically organized and, therefore, remains inaccessible for empirically testing theories about cultural evolution and historical dynamics. For example, what evolutionary mechanisms were involved in the transition from the small-scale, uncentralized societies, in which humans lived 10,000 years ago, to the large-scale societies with an extensive division of labor, great differentials in wealth and power, and elaborate governance structures of today?
