Inter-row subsoiling increases marketable yield in potatoes

Inter-row subsoiling increased average yield of 40-65 mm potatoes by 14 pct during 2001-2003. But there were significant differences between the years. In 2001, the yield increased by 49 pct, whereas it was unaffected or decreased in 2002 and 2003. Better understanding of optimal subsoiling conditions is needed to exploit the benefit of inter-row subsoiling

ABSTRACTCliff to Bratislava!Pop, Rock, and Other Western Impulsesin Czechoslovak Youth Culture of the 1960sThe article describes how ‘Western’ popular music found its way to Czechoslovakia, and how it established itself from the early 1960s as a legitimate genre marked by growing professionalization and increased access to radio and TV, record companies, festivals, etc. The political and social factors facilitating these developments are presented, and the paper argues that despite the major differences in political systems west and east of the Iron Curtain, developments in Czechoslovakia and Denmark had much in common, and that the political ‘marginality’ of rock allowed for broader social and cultural norms to influence significantly the way the authorities approached the phenomenon. The Communist regime was far from monolithic in its handling of rock and other western-inspired youth culture as documented through an analysis of statements about the phenomenon in Party documents and public media. The highly polarized approach to western culture of the 1950s was scaled back and replaced by references to universal trends. This happened among adherents as well as opponents of the new music, as the latter presented long-haired youngsters as primitive deviants violating common norms for civilized behaviour

Neurophysiologische Erklärbarkeit phänomenaler Gehalte

In der Arbeit geht es um die subjektiven Erfahrungen (Qualia), die wir aufgrund der sinnlichen Qualitäten (Farbe, Ton, Geschmack, Geruch, etc.) infolge der sinnlichen Wahrnehmung haben. Es wird die Frage untersucht, ob die Qualia auf neurophysiologische Vorgänge, die im Gehirn ablaufen, reduzierbar sind. Im Mittelpunkt steht zunächst die Existenz des phänomenalen Bewusstseins dessen struktureller Aufbau dargestellt wird, wobei die Bedingungen angesprochen werden, die für die Entstehung dieses Bewusstseins maßgebend sind. Es folgt die Untersuchung über das Wesen der phänomenalen Gehalte (Qualia) und dabei um die Aussage, dass diese Gehalte, die bei der bewussten Sinneswahrnehmung auftreten, mehr sind als Dispositionen von Nervenzuständen. In der Arbeit wird dann die Eigentümlichkeit der Subjektivität herausgearbeitet, deren Besonderheit darin besteht, dass nur das wahrnehmende Subjekt diese subjektiven Empfindungen (Qualia), dieses subjektive Erleben hat, das ihm sagt, wie es sich anfühlt, diese oder jene Erfahrung zu haben. Im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit werden zwei Argumente vorgestellt und diskutiert, die sich gegen die Reduzierbarkeit des phänomenalen Gehalts auf neurophysiologische Vorgänge im Gehirn wenden: Das Argument des unvollständigen Wissens und das Argument der Erklärungslücke. Eine Betrachtung aus naturwissenschaftlicher Sicht schließt sich danach an, die zeigen soll, wie man bemüht ist, neuronale Korrelate hinsichtlich des phänomenalen Gehalts ausfindig zu machen. Die Dissertation endet mit der Aussage; dass Subjektivität und phänomenale Gehalte nicht außerhalb der Naturgesetze stehen, aber der augenblickliche Stand der Forschungen auf dem neurowissenschaftlichen Gebiet erlaubt es noch nicht, diese mentalen Zustände restfrei auf neurophysiologische Prozesse im Gehirn zurückzuführen

Induced mannosidosis-excretion of oligosaccharides by locoweed-intoxicated sheep

AbstractDaily urine samples were collected from a locoweed-fed sheep, and the oligosaccharide content examined by thin-layer and liquid chromatography. An unusual pattern of urine oligosaccharides was observed, which appears to be characteristic of loco intoxication. Changes in the pattern could be correlated with the onset of visible disease, which occurred approximately 5 weeks after the typical urine sugars were first detected. HPLC showed that these sugars consisted of two homologous series of oligosaccharides containing one and two residues of 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose, respectively
