Students Research Self-Efficacy During Online Doctoral Research Courses

    Get PDF
This study will explore student skill development and research self-efficacy as related to online doctoral students’ first core research course experience. Findings from this study will be used to inform instructors in effective ways to support doctoral students during their early research experiences. This support will ensure that online graduate students will develop well-crafted dissertations and following graduation, continue to conduct research. The original research design was a grounded theory study where both qualitative and quantitative data were to be collected prior to students starting the course and following course completion. It was proposed to collect data through interviews, observations in the form of documented online discussions and correspondences, and the Research Self-Efficacy Scale (RSES). Course grades and final research outline projects were supposed to be examined to determine student mastery of key concepts. A convenience sample was to be drawn but due to a low response rate, the authors decided to apply an exploratory case study method and use this as a pilot to inform a larger study. The final result of the case study analysis will be detailed descriptions of each case with discussion of categories and themes along with the exploration of commonalities and differences

Towards programmable friction: control of lubrication with ionic liquid mixtures by automated electrical regulation

For mechanical systems in relative motion it would be fascinating if a non-mechanical stimulus could be used to directly control friction conditions. Therefore, different combinations of lubricants and external triggers for tribological influence have already been investigated. We show that when two metallic friction partners are lubricated with ionic liquid mixtures (ILM), consisting of long-chain cation and two different high charge/mass ratio anion containing ILs, the application of an electric impulse induces a permanent change of the frictional response. Such mixtures are able to alter the coefficient of friction (COF) to a greater extent, more accurately and faster than the respective single-component ILs. This change in the frictional properties is presumably due to changes in the externally induced electrical polarization at the surface, which influences the molecular adsorption, the exchange of adsorbed ions and their molecular orientation. The correlation between surface charges and friction can be used to control friction. This is achieved by implementing an electric tribo-controller which can adjust preset friction values over time. Programming friction in this way is a first step towards tribosystems that automatically adapt to changing conditions

Accelerated dynamic Fourier velocity encoding by exploiting velocity-spatio-temporal correlations

Objective: To describe how the information content in a Fourier velocity encoding (FVE) scan can be transformed into a very sparse representation and to develop a method that exploits the compactness of the data to significantly accelerate the acquisition. Materials and Methods: For validation, fully sampled FVE datasets were acquired in phantom and in vivo experiments. Fivefold and eightfold acceleration was simulated by using only one fifth or one eighth of the data for reconstruction in the proposed method based on the k-t BLAST framework. Reconstructed images were compared quantitatively to those from the fully sampled data. Results: Velocity spectra in the accelerated datasets were comparable to the spectra from fully sampled datasets. The detected peak velocities remained accurate even at eightfold acceleration, and the overall shape of the spectra was well preserved. Slight temporal smoothing was seen in the accelerated datasets. Conclusion: A novel technique for accelerating time-resolved FVE scan is presented. It is possible to accelerate FVE to acquisition speeds comparable to a standard time-resolved phase-contrast sca

Observation of enhanced subthreshold K+ production in central collisions between heavy nuclei

    Get PDF
In the very heavy collision system 197Au+197Au the K+ production process was studied as a function of impact parameter at 1 GeV/nucleon, a beam energy well below the free N-N threshold. The K+ multiplicity increases more than linearly with the number of participant nucleons and the K+/ pi + ratio rises significantly when going from peripheral to central collisions. The measured K+ double differential cross section is enhanced by a factor of 6 compared to microscopic transport calculations if secondary processes (Delta N-->K Lambda N and Delta Delta -->K Lambda N) are ignored

Durchblutungsbedingte Komplikationen nach vertikaler Mammareduktionsplastik mit superiorem Mamillenstiel in Abhängigkeit vom Jugulo-Mamillen-Abstand

The vertical reduction mammaplasty with a superior nipple-areola complex-bearing pedicle is a frequently used technique for the treatment of macromastia. However, complications occur using this technique as well as in other techniques. Complications depending on the arterial and venous perfusion of the nipple-areola complex and wound healing problems can be found beside other complications. But the preoperative evaluation of possible complications turned out to be difficult. Former studies dealing with the relationship between preoperative data and postoperative complications have shown that there is no simple clinical parameter to evaluate the risk of postoperative complications. In this study we analyzed postoperative complications of 104 patients undergoing vertical reduction mammaplasty (Lejour’s technique or modified L-Technique) with a superior lipodermal pedicle at the department of Plastic Surgery, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery of the University Hospital Aachen. Apart from the jugulo-mamillar measure as the main determining factor other parameters like age, weight, height, body mass index, chest measurement and breast size were acquired. The occurring complications were documented separately for each breast. (n=208) Using logistic regressions we analyzed the correlation between the length of the jugulo-mamillar measure and arterial and venous circulatory disorders. The level of significance was set as p=0,025. Other data was analyzed descriptively. Among our patients we noted that venous circulatory disorders appeared significantly more often in cases with a jugulo-mamillar measure of 30 centimetres or more (p=0,0017). Arterial circulatory disorders did not appear significantly more frequently in these cases (p=0,2319). Furthermore we observed wound healing disorders concerning the region of the nipple-areola complex and the vertical scar in patients with a jugulo-mamillar measure of 30 centimetres or more. Patients with venous circulatory disorder showed wound healing disorders of the nipple-areola complex in 47,4%. 9 patients needed surgical revision of the nipple-areola complex (8,7%). These results allow the conclusion that the jugulo-mamillar measure is a simple but important clinical parameter evaluating the risk of postoperative complications caused by circulatory disorder of the nipple-areola complex and the vertical scar. Patients with a jugulo-mamillar measure of 30 centimetres or more should be treated with specific attention during the perioperative course
