    Mothers' Consumption of Soy Drink But Not Black Tea Increases the Flavonoid Content of Term Breast Milk: A Pilot Randomized, Controlled Intervention Study

    Objective: We performed a pilot RCT to prove the hypothesis that a controlled ingestion of polyphenol-rich beverages (soy drink, decaffeinated black tea) in nutritive dosages by nursing women has an effect on the composition (flavonoid concentration, total antioxidant capacity) of breast milk. Methods: Healthy nursing women were supplemented with either 250 mL of a soy drink (12 mg isoflavones; n = 18), 300 mL decaffeinated black tea (67 mg catechins; n = 18), or 300 mL water (n = 8, control) for 6 days. Milk samples were collected before, during, and after intervention. Flavonoid content (isoflavones/catechins, HPLC) and total antioxidant capacity of milk and test drinks in milk specimens were assessed. Results: Isoflavone content (genistein and daidzein) in breast milk increased up to 12 nmol/L after soy drink consumption; the major flavonoids constituents of black tea (catechin, epicatechin, and respective conjugates) could not be detected in milk samples. With both interventions, the total antioxidant capacity of breast milk was not affected. Conclusions: Mothers' daily consumption of a soy drink considerably increases isoflavone content of breast milk resulting in an estimated daily exposure of 9.6 nmol isoflavones in a 4-month-old suckling infant. Luminal flavanol uptake from black tea consumed by the nursing mother may be too low to affect flavanol concentrations in breast milk

    A randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of carbohydrate-reduced or fat-reduced diets in patients attending a telemedically guided weight loss program

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We investigated whether macronutrient composition of energy-restricted diets influences the efficacy of a telemedically guided weight loss program.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two hundred overweight subjects were randomly assigned to a conventional low-fat diet and a low-carbohydrate diet group (target carbohydrate content: >55% energy and <40% energy, respectively). Both groups attended a weekly nutrition education program and dietary counselling by telephone, and had to transfer actual body weight data to our clinic weekly with added Bluetooth<sup>® </sup>technology by mobile phone. Various fatness and fat distribution parameters, energy and macronutrient intake, and various biochemical risk markers were measured at baseline and after 6, and 12 months.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In both groups, energy intake decreased by 400 kcal/d compared to baseline values within the first 6 months and slightly increased again within the second 6 months. Macronutrient composition differed significantly between the groups from the beginning to month 12. At study termination, weight loss was 5.8 kg (SD: 6.1 kg) in the low-carbohydrate group and 4.3 kg (SD: 5.1 kg) in the low-fat group (p = 0.065). In the low-carbohydrate group, triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol levels were lower at month 6 and waist circumference and systolic blood pressure were lower at month 12 compared with the low-fat group (P = 0.005–0.037). Other risk markers improved to a similar extent in both groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Despite favourable effects of both diets on weight loss, the carbohydrate-reduced diet was more beneficial with respect to cardiovascular risk factors compared to the fat-reduced diet. Nevertheless, compliance with a weight loss program appears to be even a more important factor for success in prevention and treatment of obesity than the composition of the diet.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00868387</p

    Prevalence of Malnutrition in Orally and Tube-Fed Elderly Nursing Home Residents in Germany and Its Relation to Health Complaints and Dietary Intake

    Objective. To investigate the prevalence of malnutrition in orally and tube-fed nursing home (NH) residents in Germany and its relation to common health complaints and dietary intake. Methods. In 350 NH residents, subjects' characteristics, Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and several health problems were inquired with the nursing staff using standardised interviews. In a subset of 122 residents, dietary intake was assessed by 3-day weighing records. Results. 7.7% of the participants were tube fed. 24.1% of orally nourished and 57.7% of tube-fed residents were malnourished (MNA < 17 p.). Malnutrition was significantly related to nausea/vomiting, constipation, pressure ulcers, dehydration, infections, antibiotic use, and hospitalisation. Mean daily energy intake was 1535 ± 413 kcal and mean protein intake was 54.2 ± 0.9 g/d irrespective of the nutritional state. Conclusion. In Germany, malnutrition is widespread among NH residents and is related to common health problems. The MNA rather reflects health condition than currently reduced dietary intake

    Integrating environmental management control systems to translate environmental strategy into managerial performance

    This study investigates the role of environmental management control systems as mechanisms to translate environmental strategy into environmental managerial performance. While prior research focuses primarily on environmental performance at the organizational level, this study specifically addresses individual managerial performance with regard to environmental outcomes. In addition, we investigate how the level of integration between regular and environmental management control systems influences the relation between environmental strategy and environmental managerial performance as well as the mediating role of environmental management control systems. Based on survey data from 218 firms and structural equation modeling, the results show that environmental management control systems mediate the relationship between environmental strategy and environmental managerial performance. Moreover, the level of integration significantly impacts the relationship between environmental management control systems and environmental managerial performance. Therefore, environmental management control systems are important mechanisms to translate environmental strategy into managerial performance, and a high level of integration can reinforce this role

    Effect of a conventional energy-restricted modified diet with or without meal replacement on weight loss and cardiometabolic risk profile in overweight women

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Abdominal obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia and hypertension are essential risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Several studies showed favorable effects of weight loss in overweight subjects on cardiometabolic risk profile.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This open-label, randomized, controlled study investigated the effect of an energy-restricted modified diet with (MR) or without meal replacements for weight control (C) on weight loss, body composition and cardiometabolic risk profile in overweight women. Of 105 randomized participants, 87 were eligible for per protocol analysis. Anthropometric, clinical, blood, 24 h-urine parameters and dietary intake were assessed at baseline and after 12 weeks.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Dietary intervention resulted in a significant weight loss in both groups (MR: -5.98 ± 2.82 kg; p < 0.001, C: -4.84 ± 3.54 kg; p < 0.001). However, the rate of responder (weight loss >5%) was higher in MR (77%) versus C group (50%) (p = 0.010). A significant reduction in waist circumference (WC) and body fat mass (BFM) was observed in both groups. Body cell mass (BCM) and lean body mass (LBM) decreased, while percentage of BCM of body weight increased in MR more than in C group. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) significantly decreased and to a similar extent in both groups. Total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C but also HDL-C declined significantly in both groups, while no change occurred in triglycerides.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Both dietary intervention strategies had a similar effect on weight loss and body fat distribution, but rate of responder was significantly higher in MR group. Systolic BP decreased to a similar extent in both groups. Cardiometabolic risk profile improved only partly in both groups.</p

    Bridging the gap between industry and synchrotron: Operando study at 30 bar over 300 h during Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

    In order to reduce CO2_{2} emissions, it is necessary to substitute fossil fuels with renewable energy using CO2_{2} as a carbon feedstock. An attractive route for synthetic fuel production is the Fe- or Co-catalysed Fischer–Tropsch process. A profound knowledge of the catalyst deactivation phenomena under industrial conditions is crucial for the process optimisation. In this study, we followed the structural changes of a Co–Ni–Re/γ-Al2_{2}O3_{3} catalyst for >300 hours at 30 bar and 250 °C during the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis operando at a synchrotron radiation facility. The advanced setup built for operando X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy allows simultaneous and robust monitoring of the catalytic activity even over 300 h time on stream. We found three activity regimes for the Co–Ni–Re/γ-Al2_{2}O3_{3} catalyst during 310 h of operation. Fast decline in activity was observed during the initiation phase in the first hours of operation due to liquid film formation (mass transport limitations). Furthermore, solid state reactions and carbon depositions were found while continuing the exposure of the catalyst to harsh temperature conditions of 250 °C. By using this advanced setup, we bridged the gap between industrially oriented catalysts and fundamental studies at synchrotron radiation facilities, opening up new possibilities for operando characterisation of industrial processes that rely on conditions of up to 450 °C and 50 bar

    Evidence-based guideline of the German Nutrition Society: fat intake and prevention of selected nutrition-related diseases

    As nutrition-related chronic diseases have become more and more frequent, the importance of dietary prevention has also increased. Dietary fat plays a major role in human nutrition, and modification of fat and/or fatty acid intake could have a preventive potential. The aim of the guideline of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) was to systematically evaluate the evidence for the prevention of the widespread diseases obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipoproteinaemia, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and cancer through the intake of fat or fatty acids. The main results can be summarized as follows: it was concluded with convincing evidence that a reduced intake of total and saturated fat as well as a larger intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) at the expense of saturated fatty acids (SFA) reduces the concentration of total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in plasma. Furthermore, there is convincing evidence that a high intake of trans fatty acids increases risk of dyslipoproteinaemia and that a high intake of long-chain polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids reduces the triglyceride concentration in plasma. A high fat intake increases the risk of obesity with probable evidence when total energy intake is not controlled for (ad libitum diet). When energy intake is controlled for, there is probable evidence for no association between fat intake and risk of obesity. A larger intake of PUFA at the expense of SFA reduces risk of CHD with probable evidence. Furthermore, there is probable evidence that a high intake of long-chain polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids reduces risk of hypertension and CHD. With probable evidence, a high trans fatty acid intake increases risk of CHD. The practical consequences for current dietary recommendations are described at the end of this article

    An Extensive Census of HST Counterparts to Chandra X-ray Sources in the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae. II. Time Series and Analysis

    We report time series and variability information for the optical identifications of X-ray sources in 47 Tuc reported in Paper I. The eight CVs with secure orbital periods have fainter accretion disks, in the V band, than field CVs with similar periods. These faint disks and the faint absolute magnitudes (Mv) of the 47 Tuc CVs suggests they have low accretion rates. The median Fx/Fopt value for the 47 Tuc CVs is higher than that of all known classes of field CV, because of both the faint Mv values and the relatively high X-ray luminosities (Lx). The latter are only seen in DQ Her systems in the field, but the 47 Tuc CVs are much fainter optically than most field DQ Hers. Some combination of magnetic behavior and low accretion rates may be able to explain our observations, but the results at present are ambiguous, since no class of field CV has distributions of both Lx and Mv that are consistent with those of the 47 Tuc CVs. The radial distribution of the X-ray detected active binaries is indistinguishable from that of the much larger sample of optical variables detected in previous WFPC2 studies. The X-ray properties of these objects are consistent with those of active binaries found in field studies. One reasonable and one marginal candidate for optical identification of a quiescent LMXB was found (one is already known). Finally, we study the blue variables showing little or no evidence for X-ray emission. Their generally long periods and the absence of flickering suggests they are not CVs.     Fungi under Modified Atmosphere—The Effects of CO2 Stress on Cell Membranes and Description of New Yeast Stenotrophomyces fumitolerans gen. nov., sp. nov.

    High levels of carbon dioxide are known to inhibit the growth of microorganisms. A total of twenty strains of filamentous fungi and yeasts were isolated from habitats with enriched carbon dioxide concentration. Most strains were derived from modified atmosphere packed (MAP) food products or mofettes and were cultivated under an atmosphere of 20% CO₂ and 80% O₂. The influence of CO₂ on fungal cell membrane fatty acid profiles was examined in this study. Major changes were the increase in linolenic acid (C18:3 cis 9, 12, 15) and, additionally in most strains, linoleic acid (C18:2 cis 9, 12) with a maximum of 24.8%, at the expense of oleic (C18:1 cis 9), palmitic (C16:0), palmitoleic (C16:1 cis 9) and stearic acid (C18:0). The degree of fatty acid unsaturation increased for all of the strains in the study, which consequently led to lower melting temperatures of the cell membranes after incubation with elevated levels of CO₂, indicating fluidization of the membrane and a potential membrane malfunction. Growth was reduced in 18 out of 20 strains in laboratory experiments and a change in pigmentation was observed in several strains. Two of the isolated strains, strain WT5 and strain WR1, were found to represent a hitherto undescribed yeast for which the new genus and species Stenotrophomyces fumitolerans (MB# 849906) is proposed
