Die mikrobiologische Qualität von in verschiedenen Betrieben hergestellten getrockneten Zwiebeln wurde in den Produktsjahren 1968—1971 auf Grund der Zahl der mesophil-aeroben Organismen und Schimmelpilze. Auf Grund der mathematisch-statistischen Auswertung der Angaben wurden die inneren mikrobiologischen Normen der Betriebe bestimmt. Diese inneren Normen kennzeichnen gut das durchschnittliche mikrobiologische Niveau der Produktion des Betriebes. Im Fall von gewissen Betriebe wurde ein Zusammenhang zwischen der mikrobiologischen Qualität des Endproduktes und der Behandlungsart des gegebenen Rohmaterials gefunden. The microbiological quality of dried onions produced in various plants was investigated in the production season 1968— 1971 by establishing the number of mesophilic-aerobic and mould organisms. The internal microbiological standards of the plants were determined on the basis of the mathematical statistical evaluation of the data. UniversityRecent research has identified explosive growth in the nonprofit sector and an increased
interest in evaluating and improving nonprofit performance through organizational capacity
building. The growing emphasis on capacity-building services for nonprofits nationwide has
resulted in the need for better information about support services for the sector. Considering the
burgeoning role of capacity building in nonprofit operations, it is important to understand more
about the industry that provides support and resources to nonprofits, including in the growing
communities located in Central Texas. This report represents the first comprehensive study of
nonprofit and volunteer capacity-building activities in Central Texas.
The result of a unique collaboration between graduate students at the Bush School of
Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University and the Lyndon B. Johnson School of
Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, this study was conducted under the
supervision of Dr. Angela Bies at the Bush School and Dr. Sarah Jane Rehnborg at the LBJ
School. Twenty-three graduate students in both programs conducted the research and analysis for
this report from September 2005 through April 2006. The Bush School and the RGK Center for
Philanthropy and Community Service at the LBJ School provided funding for the study. The
project also partnered on a pro bono basis with two client organizations, the United Way Capital
Area and the Texas Nonprofit Management Assistance Network.
The primary research objective was to replicate two recent studies. The first was Millesen
and Bies 2004 report for the Forbes Funds, An Analysis of the Pittsburgh Region s Capacity-
Building Industry. The second was an examination of volunteer management capacity
modeled on a nationwide volunteer management study (Hager, 2004) conducted by the Urban
Institute in collaboration with the Corporation for National and Community Service. Because our
research took place in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, we also explored
nonprofit capacity issues related to emergency interventions, particularly how crises affect

Dynamic Interplay in Tumor Ecosystems: Communication between Hepatoma Cells and Fibroblasts
Tumors are intricate ecosystems where cancer cells and non-malignant stromal cells, including cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), engage in complex communication. In this study, we investigated the interaction between poorly (HLE) and well-differentiated (HuH7) hepatoma cells and LX2 fibroblasts. We explored various communication channels, including soluble factors, metabolites, extracellular vesicles (EVs), and miRNAs. Co-culture with HLE cells induced LX2 to produce higher levels of laminin β1, type IV collagen, and CD44, with pronounced syndecan-1 shedding. Conversely, in HuH7/LX2 co-culture, fibronectin, thrombospondin-1, type IV collagen, and cell surface syndecan-1 were dominant matrix components. Integrins α6β4 and α6β1 were upregulated in HLE, while α5β1 and αVβ1 were increased in HuH7. HLE-stimulated LX2 produced excess MMP-2 and 9, whereas HuH7-stimulated LX2 produced excess MMP-1. LX2 activated MAPK and Wnt signaling in hepatoma cells, and conversely, hepatoma-derived EVs upregulated MAPK and Wnt in LX2 cells. LX2-derived EVs induced over tenfold upregulation of SPOCK1/testican-1 in hepatoma EV cargo. We also identified liver cancer-specific miRNAs in hepatoma EVs, with potential implications for early diagnosis. In summary, our study reveals tumor type-dependent communication between hepatoma cells and fibroblasts, shedding light on potential implications for tumor progression. However, the clinical relevance of liver cancer-specific miRNAs requires further investigation
Occurrence and genetic variability of Candida parapsilosis sensu lato in Hungary
The occurrence and genetic variability of Candida parapsilosis isolates in two Hungarian hospitals, located in Debrecen and Pecs, were examined. Among the 209 Candida isolates examined, 20 were found to belong to C. parapsilosis sensu lato, based on morphological, physiological and molecular data. The frequency of occurrence of C. parapsilosis isolates (9.6 %) was lower than that observed in Europe but higher than that observed previously in Hungary. The genetic variability of C. parapsilosis sensu lato isolates was also examined using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis and sequence analysis of the intergenic transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rRNA gene cluster. The genetic variability of the isolates was relatively high, as revealed by RAPID analysis. Two isolates were found to belong to the recently described Candida metapsilosis-species (C. parapsilosis group III), based on ITS sequence data, RAPID analysis and phenotypic data. These two isolates could also be distinguished from C. parapsilosis sensu stricto isolates using a primer pair developed for the detection of C. parapsilosis group I isolates.
