    Commensurate to incommensurate magnetic phase transition in Honeycomb-lattice pyrovanadate Mn2V2O7

    We have synthesized single crystalline sample of Mn2_2V2_2O7_7 using floating zone technique and investigated the ground state using magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and neutron diffraction. Our magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity reveal two successive magnetic transitions at TN1=T_{N1} = 19 K and TN2=T_{N2} = 11.8 K indicating two distinct magnetically ordered phases. The single crystal neutron diffraction study shows that in the temperature (TT) range 11.8 K T\le T \le 19 K the magnetic structure is commensurate with propagation vector k1=(0,0.5,0)k_1 = (0, 0.5, 0), while upon lowering temperature below TN2=T_{N2} = 11.8 K an incommensurate magnetic order emerges with k2=(0.38,0.48,0.5)k_2 = (0.38, 0.48, 0.5) and the magnetic structure can be represented by cycloidal modulation of the Mn spin in acac-plane. We are reporting this commensurate to incommensurate transition for the first time. We discuss the role of the magnetic exchange interactions and spin-orbital coupling on the stability of the observed magnetic phase transitions.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Spin wave spectrum of the quantum ferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice Lu2V2O7

    Neutron inelastic scattering has been used to probe the spin dynamics of the quantum (S=1/2) ferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice Lu2V2O7. Well-defined spin waves are observed at all energies and wavevectors, allowing us to determine the parameters of the Hamiltonian of the system. The data are found to be in excellent overall agreement with a minimal model that includes a nearest- neighbour Heisenberg exchange J = 8:22(2) meV and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) D =1:5(1) meV. The large DMI term revealed by our study is broadly consistent with the model developed by Onose et al. to explain the magnon Hall effect they observed in Lu2V2O7 [1], although our ratio of D=J = 0:18(1) is roughly half of their value and three times larger than calculated by ab initio methods [2].Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    A pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial of an educational intervention for GPs in the assessment and management of depression

    Background. General practitioners (GPs) can be provided with effective training in the skills to manage depression. However, it remains uncertain whether such training achieves health gain for their patients. Method. The study aimed to measure the health gain from training GPs in skills for the assessment and management of depression. The study design was a cluster randomized controlled trial. GP participants were assessed for recognition of psychological disorders, attitudes to depression, prescribing patterns and experience of psychiatry and communication skills training. They were then randomized to receive training at baseline or the end of the study. Patients selected by GPs were assessed at baseline, 3 and 12 months. The primary outcome was depression status, measured by HAM-D. Secondary outcomes were psychiatric symptoms (GHQ-12) quality of life (SF-36), satisfaction with consultations, and health service use and costs. Results. Thirty-eight GPs were recruited and 36 (95%) completed the study. They selected 318 patients, of whom 189 (59%) were successfully recruited. At 3 months there were no significant differences between intervention and control patients on HAM-D, GHQ-12 or SF-36. At 12 months there was a positive training effect in two domains of the SF-36, but no differences in HAM-D, GHQ-12 or health care costs. Patients reported trained GPs as somewhat better at listening and understanding but not in the other aspects of satisfaction. Conclusions. Although training programmes may improve GPs' skills in managing depression, this does not appear to translate into health gain for depressed patients or the health service

    Gravitational Flux Tubes

    By studying multidimensional Kaluza-Klein theories, or gravity plus U(1) or SU(2) gauge fields it is shown that these theories possess similar flux tube solutions. The gauge field which fills the tube geometry of these solutions leads to a comparision with the flux tube structures in QCD. These solutions also carry a ``magnetic'' charge, Q, which for the SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) system exhibits a dual relationship with the Yang-Mills gauge coupling, g, (Q=1/gQ=1/g). As Q0Q \to 0 or QQ \to \infty, gg \to \infty or g0g \to 0 respectively. Thus within this classical EYM field theory we find solutions which have features - flux tubes, magnetic charges, large value of the gauge coupling - that are similar to the key ingredients of confinement in QCD.Comment: REVTEX, 12 p

    After presenting Kripke’s criticism to Frege’s ideas on context dependence of thoughts, I present two recent attempts of considering cognitive aspects of context dependent expressions inside a truth conditional pragmatics or semantics: Recanati’s non-descriptive modes of presentation (MOPs) and Kaplan’s ways of having in mind (WHIMs). After analysing the two attempts and verifying which answers they should give to the problem discussed by Kripke, I suggest a possible interpretation of these attempts: to insert a procedural or algorithmic level in semantic representations of indexicals.     How does land use affect the relative abundance of two mesopredators in the, Eastern Cape, South Africa?

    Moderator: Wouter van Hoven.Presented at the 8th international congress for wildlife and livelihoods on private and communal lands: livestock, tourism, and spirit, that was held on September 7-12, 2014 in Estes Park, Colorado.Presenter: Armand Kok.Livestock pastoralism and game ranching are the two dominant land use types in the Eastern Cape, South Africa and conflict between humans and medium sized carnivores is widespread. In this study, we used 12 spatially explicit (3 x 3) trail camera grids (3600ha), to assess the relative abundance indices (RAI) of two common predators; black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas) and caracals (Caracal caracal). Camera grids were equally distributed across the two land use types. Over 19121 trap nights, 726 photographs of black-backed jackals and 81 photographs of caracals were taken. The RAI of jackals was significantly higher on game ranches than livestock farms (U = 109; df = 1; p 0.05). While the two mesopredators are actively removed by managers on both land-use types, removal rates are higher on livestock farms than game ranches. Thus, monogamous, pair-bonded black-backed jackals may be more sensitive to the effects of predator control than solitary caracals. The merits of predator removal as a conflict mitigation strategy are discussed

    Nonperturbative renormalization group in a light-front three-dimensional real scalar model

    The three-dimensional real scalar model, in which the Z2Z_2 symmetry spontaneously breaks, is renormalized in a nonperturbative manner based on the Tamm-Dancoff truncation of the Fock space. A critical line is calculated by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian regularized with basis functions. The marginal (ϕ6\phi^6) coupling dependence of the critical line is weak. In the broken phase the canonical Hamiltonian is tachyonic, so the field is shifted as ϕ(x)φ(x)+v\phi(x)\to\varphi(x)+v.
