Determining military expenditures: arms races and spill-over effects in cross-section and panel data
This paper considers the determinants of military spending, building on an emerging literature that estimates military expenditure demand functions in cross-section and panel data, incorporating ‘arms-race’ type effects. It updates Dunne and Perlo-Freeman (2003b) using the SIPRI military expenditure database for the period 1988-2003, finding broadly similar results. It also shows differences in results across panel methods, particularly the within and between estimates and illustrates the importance of recognising and modelling dynamic processes within panel data. Heterogeneity is also found to be an important issue and when countries are broken up into groups on the basis of per capita income there is no obvious systematic pattern in the results. This is seen to imply that the demand for military spending, even between two mutually hostile powers, may depend on the whole nature of the relationship between them (and other countries and events in the region), and not simply Richardsonian action-reaction patterns
The Demand for Military Expenditure in Developing Countries: Hostility versus Capability
This paper has considers the interpretation of the empirical results of the developing literature on the demand for military spending that specifies a general model with arms race and spillover effects and estimates it on cross-section and panel data. It questions whether it is meaningful to talk of an ‘arms race’ in panel data or cross-section data, and suggests that it may be more appropriate to talk about the relevant variables – aggregate military spending of the ‘Security Web’ (i.e. all neighbours and other security-influencing powers) and the aggregate military spending of ‘Potential Enemies’– as acting as proxies for threat perceptions, which will reflect both hostility and capability.Military Spending, Developing Countries, Demand.

Renormalization of Coulomb interactions in s-wave superconductor NaCoO
We study the renormalized Coulomb interactions due to retardation effect in
NaCoO. Although the Morel-Anderson's pseudo potential for
orbital is relatively large because the direct Coulomb repulsion
is large, that for interband transition between and
orbitals is very small since the renormalization factor for
pair hopping is square of that for . Therefore, the s-wave
superconductivity due to valence-band Suhl-Kondo mechanism will survive against
strong Coulomb interactions. The interband hopping of Cooper pairs due to shear

Developmental Dyslexia: Evidence for a Subgroup with a Reversal of Cerebral Asymmetry
The Computerized Brain Tomograms of 24 Patients with Developmental Dyslexia Were Analyzed for Cerebral Asymmetry. Ten Patients Showed a Reversal of the Pattern of Asymmetry Regularly Observed in Normal Right-Handed Individuals So that the Right Parietooccipital Region Was Wider Than the Left. the Ten Dyslexic Patients with This Reversal of Cerebral Asymmetry Had a Lower Mean Verbal IQ Than the Other 14 Dyslexic Patients in This Study. the Reversal of Cerebral Asymmetry that Occurred in Ten of the Dyslexic Patients May Result in Language Lateralization to a Cerebral Hemisphere that is Structurally Less Suited to Support Language Function and Thus Act as a Risk Factor for the Development of Reading Disability. © 1978, American Medical Association. Meat Quality Evaluation of Broiler Breast Fillets Affected by Aging Time and Marination
Abstract: Poultry meat production in Argentina has experienced an important increase. Poultry processors have incorporated different strategies to reduce processing time and improve quality of breast fillets. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of deboning time and marination on meat quality of broiler breast fillets produced in Argentina. Three hundred sixty commercial 48 d old male broilers were aged for 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 or 24 h before deboning. After deboning pH and color were determined. The right fillet of each breast was immediately quick-frozen and the left fillet was marinated by injection and then quick-frozen. All breast fillets were stored when frozen for 60 d and then thawed for pH, color, Warner-Bratzler shear force and thawing loss determinations. pH measured at deboning decreased during the first 4 h of aging in not marinated fillets. Measures taken after frozen storage showed no changes in pH with aging time. Lightness measured at deboning increased with aging time. Shear values in both marinated and not marinated fillets decreased as from 6 h of aging. Furthermore, marinated treatment reduced shear values in all aging time

These polymers have pores in its structure both in the dry and swollen state. Although it is well known that the structures and properties greatly differ between these two states, only few methods provide information about the swollen one, even though most of the applications involve the matrices in this situation. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is a suitable tool for the study of the molecular dynamics of different liquids spatially confined in macro, meso and nanopores, through changes in the relaxation times. In transverse relaxation experiments, either diffusion inside the pore, or relaxation induced by mobility restriction of the liquid near the wall, are additional
