    Inertial oscillations in the Mediterranean

    Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution June, 1970Measurements of ocean currents were made by the author in the Western Mediterranean Sea at five depths for two months during early 1969. In terms of the dominant and persistent presence of inertial oscillations, circularly polarized currents having periods of a half pendulum day, the data are among the most striking ever collected. Two contemporary theories have been adapted for interpretation of this data. On the basis of a ray or short-wave-length theory, energy arriving at the observing site is found to fall into two categories, that making direct arrival from the, surface where it is assumed to have been generated, and that which undergoes one or more reflections. To the extent that the former dominates, it is found that the Algerian Coast about 130 km. to the south would cast a shadow to the north, the precise shape of which would be highly dependent on small variations in frequency. The nature of this frequency dependence implies a gradual increase in frequency with depth at the observing latitude. Although the data show a measurable shift (about 3%) towards higher frequencies, which is roughly the required amount, the lack of progressive frequency change with depth does not support the shadow hypothesis. In addition, the data is interpreted in terms of normal mode theory, where the nearby coast is seen to force a discrete modal structure to the solutions. The observed variation of current phase with depth indicates that a single internal mode dominates over a large portion of the data, while variations of both current amplitude and phase with depth are consistent this being the third internal vertical mode. Existence of a normal mode is also consistent with the long time, on the order of three weeks, for which the oscillations were observed to persist and with the dimensions of the Mediterranean Basin.This work was supported by the National Science Foundation under contract GA10208 and by the Office of Naval Research under contract NONR 241-11

    International Student Migration: A Partial Identification Analysis

    This paper studies the decision made by a family to invest in student migration. We propose an empirical structural decision model which reflects the importance of both the return to the investment and the budgetary constraint in the choice of the family. We circumvent the problem of endogeneity of the educational attainment by deriving sharp bounds and conduct inference for the parameters of interest. The data are collected on students from Cameroon, using a new snowball sampling procedure, which allow the inclusion of both migrants and non-migrants in the sample. We propose bias corrected estimators for this procedure. We study the characteristics of potential candidates to migration that increase or decrease their probability to migrate, accounting for a potential helper in the diaspora. Among the interesting results we find that a choice to complete a Master's degree doubles the odds of migration, there is little evidence of gender preference, students migrants are positively selected on their previous academic results

    Identified baryon and meson distributions at large transverse momenta from Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

    Transverse momentum spectra of π±\pi^{\pm}, pp and pˉ\bar{p} up to 12 GeV/c at mid-rapidity in centrality selected Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV are presented. In central Au+Au collisions, both π±\pi^{\pm} and p(pˉ)p(\bar{p}) show significant suppression with respect to binary scaling at pT>p_T > 4 GeV/c. Protons and anti-protons are less suppressed than π±\pi^{\pm}, in the range 1.5 <pT<< p_{T} <6 GeV/c. The π/π+\pi^-/\pi^+ and pˉ/p\bar{p}/p ratios show at most a weak pTp_T dependence and no significant centrality dependence. The p/πp/\pi ratios in central Au+Au collisions approach the values in p+p and d+Au collisions at pT>p_T > 5 GeV/c. The results at high pTp_T indicate that the partonic sources of π±\pi^{\pm}, pp and pˉ\bar{p} have similar energy loss when traversing the nuclear medium.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry and cross section for inclusive jet production in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

    We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL and the differential cross section for inclusive midrapidity jet production in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. The cross section data cover transverse momenta 5 < pT < 50 GeV/c and agree with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD evaluations. The A_LL data cover 5 < pT < 17 GeV/c and disfavor at 98% C.L. maximal positive gluon polarization in the polarized nucleon.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Minor changes from review process in Phys.     We report a new STAR measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL for inclusive jet production at mid-rapidity in polarized p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The data, which cover jet transverse momenta 5 < p_T < 30 GeV/c, are substantially more precise than previous measurements. They provide significant new constraints on the gluon spin contribution to the nucleon spin through the comparison to predictions derived from one global fit of polarized deep-inelastic scattering measurements.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures + 1 tabl

    Pion interferometry in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{\mathrm{s}_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}} = 200 GeV

    We present a systematic analysis of two-pion interferometry in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV using the STAR detector at RHIC. We extract the HBT radii and study their multiplicity, transverse momentum, and azimuthal angle dependence. The Gaussianess of the correlation function is studied. Estimates of the geometrical and dynamical structure of the freeze-out source are extracted by fits with blast wave parameterizations.     Neutral Kaon Interferometry in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

    We present the first statistically meaningful results from two-K0s interferometry in heavy-ion collisions. A model that takes the effect of the strong interaction into account has been used to fit the measured correlation function. The effects of single and coupled channel were explored. At the mean transverse mass m_T = 1.07 GeV, we obtain the values R = 4.09 +/- 0.46 (stat.) +/- 0.31 (sys) fm and lambda = 0.92 +/- 0.23 (stat) +/- 0.13 (sys), where R and lambda are the invariant radius and chaoticity parameters respectively. The results are qualitatively consistent with m_T systematics established with pions in a scenario characterized by a strong collective flow.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure

    Transverse-momentum dependent modification of dynamic texture in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV

    Correlations in the hadron distributions produced in relativistic Au+Au collisions are studied in the discrete wavelet expansion method. The analysis is performed in the space of pseudorapidity (|eta| < 1) and azimuth (full 2 pi) in bins of transverse momentum (p_t) from 0.14 < p_t < 2.1 GeV/c. In peripheral Au+Au collisions a correlation structure ascribed to mini-jet fragmentation is observed. It evolves with collision centrality and p_t in a way not seen before which suggests strong dissipation of minijet fragmentation in the longitudinally-expanding medium.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure, accepted as Phys.Rev.C Rapid Communication.     Enhanced strange baryon production in Au+Au collisions compared to p+p at sqrts = 200 GeV

    We report on the observed differences in production rates of strange and multi-strange baryons in Au+Au collisions at sqrts = 200 GeV compared to pp interactions at the same energy. The strange baryon yields in Au+Au collisions, then scaled down by the number of participating nucleons, are enhanced relative to those measured in pp reactions. The enhancement observed increases with the strangeness content of the baryon, and increases for all strange baryons with collision centrality. The enhancement is qualitatively similar to that observed at lower collision energy sqrts =17.3 GeV. The previous observations are for the bulk production, while at intermediate pT, 1 < pT< 4 GeV/c, the strange baryons even exceed binary scaling from pp yields.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures.
